View Full Version : Baby #2, Brought In By The Cat.

Today I received a phone call pleading for me to take a baby squirrel that the family's cat had brought in this morning. They claimed that he had been bleeding a little bit (not sure where, could only find a possible area by his ear but is so small that it cannot be seen in a picture). He has been on Pedialyte all day, according to the family. When I brought him home, roughly at 7:30PM (it is now 7:51), we fed him 2 ccs of FV (1 part FV, 3 parts water). He peed clearly afterwards, no poop. His front left paw has barely any movement, along with the rest of him. He has been very inactive, he looks around four-five weeks old (about Chip's size, whose eyes are open). Currently, we have him with Chip in his box with the heating pad and fleece. His eyes are not open yet, but they look as though they might open in a day or two. Any advice??? He's looking very lethargic, but not making any clicking noise. He IS making a sort of whimpering noise, though.. What should I do? :dono

In the last one, Chip is on the left (barely could sit still!), and the new one is on the right... :/

Give him antibiotics asap. Where was the bite mark?

Do you have any antibiotics? Baytril (animal), Cipro (human med) - anything like that? Are you near any of our GA rehabbers who might have some? Friends, relatives? A cat caught baby with blood on him especially needs antibiotics just as soon as possible.
Meantime, make sure he is hydrated (I would give several pedialyte feedings) and obviously, first, make sure he is warm.

What antibiotics should he be on? Doses?
The bite mark appeared to be near the left ear.

Best bet: Baytril or Cipro. What do you have access to?

I've got Baytril. He's had a lot of Pedialyte, looks hydrated, has had 2 ccs of FV/water. Baytril has been used on my other baby, who had pneumonia from the previous caretaker- which I still have mixed up.. I could give him .05 cc of Baytril? He is warm, I already made sure of that. I know the basics, I have already been raising Chip.

If he is the same weight as Chip I would start the antibiotics right away. Cat saliva is deadly - pasturella if my memory serves... How fresh is the med?

The medicine is good until 2013, I'll go mix up some more from a new caplet (the caplets were used for my cat, Max, but I've been told by TSB to mix it with 2ML water to dilute).

Then this is a very lucky little squirrel, because this is his very best chance. Give him the meds - just like you did Chip. It will help that he has a little "brother" to snuggle with. You know the rest - dark, nice and warm, quiet.

You can give infant ibuprophen for pain if you do not have any veterinarin pain meds like metacam or tramadol. If you have his weight I can give you the dose.
I hope he does not have internal issues that can't be seen. Poor baby...

He looks around 60 grams, I'm awaiting a gram scale, but that's how much Chip is to my knowledge (that's what he was dosed by).

CritterMom

.02cc every 4 hours as needed.
This dosage is for the INFANT ibuprophen.
If all you can find is CHILDRENS ibuprophen, it is half as strong as the infant, so you would have to double the dose. Yes I know this does not make sense at first, but the infant is more concentrated so you can give them less total volume, where children are easier to give it to and the total amount can be larger. I actually called their hotline trying to wrap my head around that one!

The adult is way too strong. The infant stuff is a liquid that is sweet tasting so they usually take it no problem. The Baytril is good - very strong stuff.

Be sure to give the Yogurt.

I wouldn't throw pred at him yet, especially if your not sure what is goin on yet
If he has any internal bleeding going on it can make him bleed out

May want to give him a cc or 2 of water in-between feedings

Stronger than ibuprofen for pain and inflamation

Hopefully once you stabilize him he will perk up, he could still be shocky from his attack, I hope little guy proves me wrong!!

pale gums..
rub log cabin syrup, karo or molasses on his gums, just a wee dab on your pinky in his mouth or syringe him a little sugar water, NO SALT, no more pedi,
the dilute FV is ideal:thumbsup
this will keep glycemic load up
keep him calm and still if possible...
make sure he does not get too hot, but don't let him chill either..
the heating pad should be creating a barely warm spot...

I just gave him some diluted FV.. The heating pad is one you set the temp, his is around 110. Warm. What is the pinch test on his toes? I don't know if it'd work, he's not moving anything really.

Pinch test is when you pinch a toe or center of the foot to see if they respond to the pain by flinching and pulling away, not a fool proof test
Most of the time they respond by pinching not so hard
If they don't I pinch real hard with my thumb nail right on the bone
When they don't respond to that it means the pain message isn't traveling up the spine to the brain
Is he nursing good? If he is strong enough to swallow he should feel that pinch

He may not be completely rehydrated - I know the finders were giving it to him but if he was on the ground for a while before the cat got him, it will take a while to accomplish that.
You might also want to try adding a blob of vanilla or banana yogurt (I love Stoneyfield Yobaby because is is super digestible and is also full fat, which they need) to his formula. The probiotics will help his tummy and the flavor may make that FV a little tastier. I am so glad he is hanging in there! And I am extra glad that you had baytril!

Dale looks to me to be favoring and leaning to the left. Might be some neuro issues here. He did curl the tail over his back always a good thing there.
Personally I would keep him warm and quiet for now keep offering formula. Every little drop counts. Go slowly with him.
Just so you know internal injuries will appear to look like a dark bruise on the under belly.

It is tough to tell - he looks very weak and sick and like he hurts. Did you get any infant ibuprophen? I really would add that in, like tonight. Soothing pain can help so much.
I echo lilidukes keeping him warm and quiet and fed. Keep an eye on little Chip - if he gets too rambunctuous, you may need to split them up temporarily. I love the idea of him having someone to hold onto, though - that is really beneficial, but you are observing what is happening and will have to make that decision.
For now I would like to see him getting meds, food, and sleep and that is it. Hopefully his little body can heal.

Aw. I hope that Chip will get his chance.
You can make him a rice buddy. Find an old sock and pour either dried, uncooked beans or uncooled rice into it until you have a lump about baby squirrel size and tie it off so the contents don't pour out. Heat it in the microwave (you will have to experiment with how long) until it is about the same warmth as your heating pad and squish it around in your hands for a minute to make sure there are no hot spots. You can also just sit with your hand cupped around him - the warmth and contact are soothing.
Now it is a waiting game. All you can do is provide him with life support and hope his little body will mend if you do. That he is eating better is really good.

He has stopped making noise for the most part, his ears are not as pinned to his head. He has been on his ibuprofen, every four hours I have re-issued the .02 mL dose. He should be out of his pain by now.

He may feel exposed being out in the open like that, with all the new smells, I'm sure holding still when they fall out of the nest saves their lives until mom can come down n get them
He seems to be doing better than before at least.
I feel so bad for him and his separation from home.
At least he has Chip, and poor Chip was lonely, both of his step-brothers passed away due to mistreatment at their former home (where I rescued Chip).
What comforts me is that I saved this baby from dying by getting him immediately from his finders (who did not know what they were doing). They wanted me to pick him up the next morning, but I insisted.
So now Chip has a new brother and Dale has been saved.
:Love_Icon
If Dale makes a remarkable recovery, the two can be released together, which would be a great happy ending.

I made them some sock buddies, Chip just doesn't know when to quit with the playing.. Dale needs some rest, I will move Chip in with him when he gets a little stronger. Right now, he's kind of groggy with pain meds & baytril. Thank you! :grouphug

Sorry for not updating, but my bestfriend arrived in town yesterday and I spent the entire day with him while my sister took care of the babies.
Dale seems to be doing a little better. He's finally eating more!! There is one odd thing about Dale though, one of his front paws curls in underneath his leg.. I find it very unusual.
I weighed both of them, they're both about 75 grams.
Also, I moved them back in together since Chip seems to be doing better about settling down around Dale

Look at Dale's paws, his left one in particular.
Do you see how it is curled? He can't hold onto anything with that paw. Can't grip the syringe, nothing. He can move it, but can't un-clench it. The vet says it's not broken.. What do you guys think is wrong? I don't know if the cat could have caused this..:thinking

Maybe it's sprained, has a hairline fracture, or a toe is broken
And it's sore
Probably not worth splinting as long as he isnt to active and you keep him in a smallish container where he can't fall and make matters worse
Keep and eye on it, something like that can take a couple of weeks to heal

Do his joints move normally, elbow? Shoulder? Wrist?

Vet can miss things too, sometimes xrays r the only way to see subtle breaks but they won't necessarily show soft tissue injuries
Does it look swollen anywhere, compare to uninjured leg

He sure looks like something hurts..
Are you giving him BABY Ibprophen
could be nerve damage, ligament, muscle, non of these show in x-rays

I'm thinking nerve damage, too....sometimes this will improve, sometimes no. :(

He's on the baby ibuprofen. I don't know what's wrong with him..
If you move it forward and stretch his paw out, it works normally. He doesn't act like it hurts. He tries to move his paw, but he can't.

I've got Dannon all natural yogurt,
how much should I give him with his medicine?
psychobird
03-17-2012, 10:52 AM
just suck up like 0.25 in a syringe, or mix a little in his formula, don't give it the same time as the antibiotics, they will just immediatly kill all the good bacteria in the yogurt
so if you are dosing him in the am and the pm, give sometime in between

:wave123 Hi Babysquirrelchip
Dale is looking Much better. You can see how swollen his little Paw is. The swelling looks like it goes up into the arm.
Have you tried Running WARM water out of the faucet. Then stick his little hand and Arm under it. (Letting it just Run over and Massage the hand.)
Does the hand feel Cool then the other? What about Warmer the the other? Is the color the same as his other hand?
:grouphug I glad you put them both together again. :Love_Icon

It feels warmer. It's healed a little because he's definitely moving it a lot more. I put it under some water, we'll see how that goes.
Is it strange he hasn't opened his eyes yet? Chip looks younger than he does..
