My dog brought in a baby grey squirrel in its mouth last night. She gently laid him on patio, no puncture wounds, no injuries. Squirrel eyes are open, has 2 bottom teeth, top teeth starting to come in. Ears are up and he has fur everywhere including belly and tail. Walks clumsy. Put him/her in cat carrier with shreaded newspaper, blanket and heating strip. He sleeps alot. After reading on internet, I rehydrated him with cocktail of sugar water with a syringe which he seems to love. This morning I fed him more sugar water and some watered down kitten formula which he likes. I also put him out on patio deck where other squirrels were on fence, hoping one was his mother and would take him. After half hour I put him back in cage, mother doesnt seem to be coming. Will other squirrels adobt him or attack him? I am trying to find somewhere to take him for rehabilitation. Is there anything else I can be feeding him right now, not sure on his age. He drinks the sugar water and formula everytime I offer the syringe, can I overfeed him?
I feed only a little at a time.

I'm trying to contact those in your area but not sure who is in your area.....I'm around Orlando you can bloat them which is like over feeding but if his eyes just opened he should be 4-5 weeks old.....hang in there more will be on..make sure he is warm.... Have you been stimulating him after each hydration... If not wet a tissue and gently stimulate his/ her privates so it can pee and poop.....how does his stools look?

Hello case07 :wave123 and :Welcome to the squirrel board.
First thing is to keep him warm. If you have a heating pad put it on low and under half of what ever you are keeping him in. we have plenty of members in florida that can help you. I'm sure someone will be along soon so keep checking back

His eyes were open when the dog brought him in. Not sure how long the squirrel was outside, it was raining and windy. Dog came from underneath the trampoline with it in its mouth. At first I thought it was dead because he was not moving. But after a few minutes he got up and stumbled around patio. After eating he gets frisky climbing through newspaper shreddings, he still walks clumsy so I think hes young. I am keeping him warm with heating pad underneath half the cage he is in. I saw some poop smeared on part of newspaper. Havent noticed pee, but the newspaper im sure soaks it right up so I am not noticing it. He moves around the cage quite a bit after feeding then eventually curls up in a ball with his tail wrapped around and sleeps till I wake him again to feed him.

this is what you need to do.
One of our senior members who posts as Jackie in Tampa uses an excellent temporary substitute, and it can be assembled from locally purchased ingredients:

3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt

Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator

do you have or can you get a 1cc syringe? start with that but you must make sure he has been warmed up and hydrated. warmth first. how long has he been on the heating pad?

He has been on the heating pad since 6pm last night. I used the sugar water cocktail every hour through a syringe for 6 hours last night to rehydrate him. Each time I put him back in on the heating pad area. Though he does crawl off of it after a while and go to different blanket in cage.

I was holding him against my stomach for about an hour as he slept then heating pad for about 2 hours before I started the hydration.

Hi case:wave123
So glad you found us and are looking to take good care of your little guy:thumbsup :thumbsup
where are you??

Goats milk can be found in Publix in the dairy section next to regular milk.
get an ice tray and pour equal amounts of the goats milk only into each section and freeze it after opening, it goes bad fast but freezes well :D This way you can just take what you need each day.
If you are close to me I can give you what you need .

I am in Davie, Florida. Do you know of any rehabilitators in my area? I want to be sure he is rehabilitated correctly and eventually released back to the wild.

Squirrels have a higher normal body temp than us: 101 to 102. This why a heating pad is so important. ONLY over half the area so they can crawl off if they get too hot.

You're getting great advice here, case, and so far you've done a great job! :thumbsup I don't know if anybody has mentioned it, but you may want to stimulate the baby to pee and poo... no sure of his age but until their eyes are open and even a few days after they need help from their mom to pee and poo.

To stimulate him, you take a soft tissue and gently rub over his genitals - as if his mom was licking him - until he begins to relieve himself. They need that after each feeding.

A while back Djarenspace9 posted that she knew a rehabber in that area. I'm walking out the door right now, but maybe someone could PM her. I started this post a while ago so if it has already been addressed, I apologize.

I don't know anyone in that area.
I used to have a vet that treated my Missy when I was in Ft. Lauderdale,
but when I tried to contact them a few months ago she is no longer practicing there and I can't locate her. :dono

We need to find good rehabbers in that area...it's the only area of FL we don't have good coverage on!

Did we come up with a plan? I can drive, but it will be Saturday before I can go. Also, I wouldn't mind taking the little one in. BUT I am new and not very experienced, only very determined. I have more fox valley and henry blocks on the way as we speak... That being said, My Max is about 10 weeks old, can the two be put together after the little one is a little older? :dono Let me know if you need me! :grouphug

Hi Case:wave123
I am Dyslexic and am slow with Typing & Computers. Can you send me your address to my EMail? :thinking cmsokla@nctv.com
I need the address and Zip code to Googal Map Quest and see Who I know close.
Your little Baby will eat 4 to 6 cc of the Formula. You wont the Tummy to be soft and Doe. You should mix a 75% kitten formula & 25% Goatmilk the first 2 feedings.
Then we will start switching him over to the Goat Milk. Is the Kitten Formula Esbilac?
PS
If you would send me your Phone number I will walk you threw the Steps for switching over.
I am also up all night Call if you need anything. I will send my number to you in the EMail.
I hope Jackie Hears something tomorrow. :thumbsup
