View Full Version : Temp. control for formula?

:dono I'm having a hard time maintaining a steady temp. with my formula. I've tried pre-loading syringes and keeping them in a cup of warm water, but the water gets cold by the time I'm feeding the last baby. If I put the cup on one of those mug heaters, it gets too hot (I keep a thermometer in so I won't burn the babies). If I put the formula in a dish over the hot cup of water, it cools too.

Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated....

also: when traveling w/shadows: how do you carry/mix, etc. formula on the road?

Thanksabunch!

Have you seen those plastic double walled glasses they make - they have an airspace between the walls of the glass that acts as thermal insulation, just like a thermous. I use them for cold drinks - I can put ice and water on my bedside table and it still has ice in it the next morning. They work the same way with hot liquids - keep them warm for a LONG time. The next time I have to syringe feed anybody, I will be using one of those to hold the water to float the formula dish in.

I use one of those mug heaters and it does keep it a little too warm, but since I preload the syringes they have a little time to cool down. Not sure how many you're feeding, but I was feeding 4 to 5 at a time so I was using between 8 & 30 1cc syringes per feeding.

Another idea that might work is to put the formula container in a water bath and put the water bath on the mug heater.

I use 2 shallow small rubbermaid containers hte ones that are like 3X3 and 2 in deep! I fill one 1/2 way with water...microwave it for 2 minutes....I put just enough formula in the other container that they will eat...then put on top of the microwaved water container...the 2 containers are stackable so when the ones on top of the other it keeps all the hot water nice and HOT! which helps the formula stay the same temp for a good 20 min or so (not that you may need it hot that long...!!!

I had this same question...with some tips and trial and error I have found this to work the best...I never pre fill my syringes...but i guess it depends on how many babies you are feeding...I only have the 2 so i just refill as needed!!!

OH when they are done eating I use the hot water (that is not REALLY hot now) to clean them a little with...!

Remember the formula should be fairly warm...maybe even a little water then you think...if they are not interested then its not warm enough!

At the recent gathering IR said that even testing on the back of your hand...it should feel a little warmer...not the same as your body temp:thumbsup

AND TRAVELING: I use FOX VALLEY so it comes in a powder form that stays fresh in the freezer for a very long time...If im traveling, I take a double the amount that I think I need just incase (in small 1/2 cup rubbermaid containers!)...you never know if theres gonna be a delay...I take a bottle or two of water (if you are using faucet water put that in a bottle) you never know if where you are going has water close to the same concentration to yours and could upset the babies tummys, I fill a bubba keg (or cooler would do) up with ICE and put the powder formula in it...the water is ok to keep at room temp! If the ice starts to melt terribly stop at a gas station and get more...as long as the water in the cooler is still very cold to the touch its ok! NOW I USUALLY PUT ALL THIS IN A BABY BAG ALONG WITH A COUPLE EXTRA FLEECE BALNKETS, HAND WARMERS IF YOUR BABY IS STILL ON HEAT, 3-4 SYRINGES W/ NIPPLES, AND COTTON BALLS OR Q-TIPS FOR CLEANING!

A squirrel Mommas boby temp is approx 102*, so he milk would also be approx the same....would feel very warm to us, as it is warmer than our normal body temp.
