View Full Version : 2 week old squirrel stopped peeing
I have a 11/2 week old baby squirrel and he has peed well several times but has stopped suddenly. What do I do?
First of all, relax a minute.
A one and a half week old is still a pinky, and needs to be stimulsted to pee correctly.
Next, do you know what kind of squirrel it is?
What have you been feeding so far?
Any specific information you can provide, helps us.

:Welcome
as Skul said, please provide detailed information:
1. how did you find him? in what condition? (injuries etc?) when?
2. did you hydrate him? how and for how long?
3. What formula you are using and at what dilution ratio? (how many parts of water to formula)
4. Do you stimulate him?
5. Is he bloated?
6. Does he poop?... what kind of poops are those?...
Can you post pics?... Pics help a lot.
It's rather late right now and most people are asleep, but please keep checking often - Skul can help you - he has tons of experience.
If you email me, I will email you a phone number - very useful that you can call right now. Just please email asap, because I need to go to bed (way past my bed time). My email is ad_astra81@hotmail.com
It's a very knowledgeable and experienced person who can guide you through each step.:grouphug

To clarify what is meant here: you need to wet a cotton swab with warm water and gently rub the little one's genitals to stimulate urination and deification. The mother would lick the babies genitals to stimulate this in the wild so you will need to do the same for the little guy/gal.

:wave123 Hi Ralf
cmsokla@nctv.com
Can you send me the Pictures we spoke of. I will be able to see and also get HB to post them later on.
You need Molasses and Water, Or maple syrup and water. Mix the Molasses like a weak Tea. Maple S. will be Mildly Sweet. NO PEDIALYTE AT ALL. Until I talk to IR about how long this little one has been on it.
Astra is posting the Goat Milk Recipe. Start him on that diluted. When I see the Picture I will let you how to go from their. Hang In their. Christal

We are going to need to Flush the EXCESS PEDIALYTE OUT OF HIS SYSTEM.
Give the Water Mixture every 15 min. Drop by drop (If you have to.) for 24 hr. Be sure to STOP THE ESBILAC and Start him out Goats milk Recipe.
Just until you get the Goat milk. Lets go to a diluted half water half Esbilac.
Keep track how much he is taking of the mixture and how much of the Molasses or Maple syrup water mixture.
Oh, you talked to Ralf.
I'll wander into the other room and find out what's going on.
Jeez, wimmin!
Hang in there. Ralf, we'll get it sorted out.

Took a couple drops of formula and about 3/4mL of syrup water pooped and peed a tiny bit. Itdidnt smell and the poop was solid.
Some folks may be concerned about the injury on the back.
Very short, describe why it's there.
(I know, they don't)
We got him from a person who had shot a nest on accident and little Ralph fell out. He was cut behind his ear and on his back.the wound s are healing and the cut behind the ear is about gone.
Kinda interesting to have something that small in your care, isn't it?
Please remember, right now, we look for short term care.
In a few days, then we slowly work up.
Little guy has some fight in him.
It is really cool but scary at the same time. He sure is, very tough.
You're doing fine.
Information overload is the thing to avoid.
A week or so down the road, you're gonna get hammered.:D
I am using Hartz milk instead of the other y'all were talking about..good or bad?

TEMPORARY Goat's Milk Formula***
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
***While waiting for the Fox Valley to arrive...
Temporary Formula for Infant Squirrels – The Goat’s Milk Formula
Because of recent manufacturing issues, Esbilac and other puppy formulas are no longer being recommended for squirrels or other wildlife. The formula that TSB recommends, Fox Valley Day One 32/40, is currently available online at www.foxvalleynutrition.com and www.henryspets.com. But those require shipping and this baby squirrel needs food NOW.
One of our senior members who posts as Jackie in Tampa uses an excellent temporary substitute, and it can be assembled from locally purchased ingredients:
3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt
Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.
Goat’s Milk
This can be purchased at natural food stores such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, and at most health food stores that sell groceries. It is a product for humans. Do not substitute commercial formula made for baby goats or other livestock sold at feed stores.
Goat’s milk is available fresh in a carton; evaporated in a can; and as a powdered milk. If you purchase either the evaporated or powdered versions, please blend them with water according to the package directions before using to make the formula. (You should find Fresh Goats Milk in the Organic Refrigerated section or with the Whole Milk.)
Heavy Whipping Cream
This is found in small cartons in the grocery store near the coffee creamers and half and half. Regular heavy cream may be substituted if it is unavailable, but the heavy whipping cream has the highest fat content, and is preferred.
Yogurt
Yogurt has beneficial bacteria in it that soothes and settles digestion. Full fat yogurt is best, and a good choice that is very widely available is Stoneyfield, or Yobaby Yogurt Vanilla. (Stoney Field is a Organic Vanilla Yogurt.) However if it is unavailable, a low fat vanilla yogurt may be substituted. Avoid those that have artificial sweeteners in them. Vanilla and banana are both popular flavors, and the sweet taste of the yogurt helps to convince the baby to accept it. (You will find in the Refrigerated Organic area.)
It has been recently discovered that very small pinky squirrels may do better digestively if, instead of being given Fox Valley formula straight, mix the Fox Valley 50/50 with the Goat’s Milk Formula assembled WITHOUT the heavy whipping cream.
*It is recommended that when just starting to feed a new baby that the first feedings be made without the heavy whipping cream. This will give their digestive systems a chance to acclimate from mama’s milk to our substitute without the harder-to-digest whipping cream. Once they accept the formula and are eliminating properly, the whipping cream can be gradually added in.
When your Fox Valley formula arrives, please transition your babies to the new formula slowly, by blending the Goat’s Milk Formula with the blended and liquefied Fox Valley formula, increasing the ratio of Fox Valley with each feeding until you are no longer using the goat’s milk.

As we discussed last night. Get some Immodium 1 drop. Did you get the Goats Milk? This was going to happen because we are flushing his system out. We still need to get RID of the Excess Sodium, from over feeding the PEDIALYTE! HOW IS THE HYDRATION GOING? Has his Mussels starting swelling any? Flush Flush Flush for 24 hr. :thumbsup Call me if you have any other Questions.
Hi Jackie.
Ralf Be careful about turning over a Non releasable Squirrel to Local Wild Life. They usually Euthanize them! :shakehead

YES, very true!
Since he is so compromised and with some kind of injury on his back, he may be considered beyond redemption (too much resources and time will have to be involved with less possibility of good outcome) and he WILL BE euthanized.

i have not read thread, I did talk to mrsskul on tele,
in this situation, my advise would be fresh in the carton cold goatsmilk, found in the grocery store near the regular milk, refridgerated section,
1 quart Meyerburg brand goats milk, in a purple carton.
cost is less than $5
dilute this 50-50 with tap water,
freeze the GM into cubes (ice tray or dixie cups etc) so you can thaw as needed.. once frozen, place them in plastic bag!
Gmilk will stay good for 72 hours after opened, after that it can grow bacterias we don't want.
sending some PMs...brb

OMG...he is super cute!
Listen I have only a bit of advice!!! I just recently found myself a new mommy to 2 babys myself! Anyone on here can tell you how much of a nervous wreck I was, (still a nervous wreck) LOL! It does get better and it does get easier! Its a VERY rewarding expieriance! Shiloh and Ranger are now about 6 & 7 weeks old They are a bundle of joy, energy and require ALOT of my time! You have to be a very commited person to do this...YOU GOT TO BE IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL! :osnap
With Shiloh...he has guppy mouth (feeding seizures) that I didnt know exactly what was going on at first:dono ...THANK GOD for the wonderful people on here!!! I have had the worry of dehydration with Ranger when I first got him, then a scare of squirrel pox that turned out to be ant bites, then he got Aspiration Pnemonia....not to mention he is incredibly little (chunky and pudgy) but miniture size, though in many ways he is more developed then Shiloh.
Just this week I have been talking to Jackie cause I had a scare of Ranger Aspirating again...but all is good...they are now in a nice cage...and eating solid foods...and fox valley 3 times a day!!!
He looks healthy and you are eager to learn which is great! Keep it up! Try not to worry to much, make sure you feed him at night at least for the next few weeks...
AND IF SOMETHING DOES HAPPEN....and you start to worry, we are all here to help!:D DONT FREAK OUT! Its hard raising a baby, I love it, but waking up at 3am everyday was really kicking my butt...glad thats over...lol! :rotfl
Keep us posted and keep the pics coming! If you get a chance go on over to Shiloh nad Ranger's thread in the nursery...Im sure alot of your questions were asked by myself and there are alot of answers!

I did hear back from geocat, unfortunatly she doesn't have formula.
Sassysquirrel is 2.5 hours away.
I have raised some big healthy sqs on goatsmilk..it'll be just fine until FV get there. I would hold off on anymore immodium, thinking the better formula will help!:thumbsup
Keep everything warm, all fluids and the baby. Do not over heat him, you should feel a nice fist sized warm spot, make him a rice buddy to snuggle with.:grouphug
Every drop counts...do the very warm , to almost hot 50-50 Goatsmilk and water, as much as he will take upto 4-5cc. If he will take 4 or 5ccs, feed him every 4 hours, he's a baby and needs to sleep.
However, if he is piddlin around and only taking little amounts, you have to continuously feed him, and every drop counts and gets him closer to BETTER!:Love_Icon
Don't let him chill, it'll depress his appetite, and slow down digestion, which will cause bloat. :shakehead
I put an inch of water in a coffee cup and microwave that for a minute, I put the formula in a baby jar and float that in the already nuked water,
use your wrist to test it.
Order the Fv, throw the Hartz crap away...if you need syringes and nipples order them also...
I saw where others have given you links etc:thumbsup
..I think he'll be fine, just going to take a few days...of hard work and lots of love.
I am not sure if it's a goood idea about subQ, that's more salt:thinking
MrsSkul are we sure?:dono
I think if you have gotten him this far and are willing to go the distance, now that you are getting GOOD baby squirrel info, he maybe fine with you, if you're ok with it...:thumbsup
by now you're probably in love anyway!:D
Let's hope for firm poops and a good appetite!:)

I would stop the water and feed diluted formula...
the hartz did not give him enough nutrition..
and the excess pedialyte caused dehydration...
his body is starving for nutrition..and formula is hydrating.
In order to heal, he must have nutrition.
You can also flood him out...water intoxification..
I found this
Water, just like any other substance, can be considered a poison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison) when over-consumed in a specific period of time. Water intoxication mostly occurs when water is being consumed at a high quantity without giving the body its proper nutrients it needs to be healthy.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication#cite_note-1)
just saying what I would do.:grouphug

IF aspiration pnuemonia is suspected, do not add anything to the formula. dilute the goats milk with tap water.
A syringe should be the only feeding utensil you are using, I like a 1cc.
The baby needs to be held head up, tail down when feeding, never tilted back, go very slow when pushing the plunger.
You need antibiotics if he is clicking with each breath. You will hear the clicking whether he is sleeping or awake.
He absolutely needs to be on heat, do not allow him to chill. It takes alot of calories to stay warm, he needs those calories to get healthy, not try to stay warm, hope you follow me.
He is very dehydrated, My advise is to get him to someone that knows what they are doing..
I know you are trying:bowdown , but he is getting seriously compromised...
Please get him to a rehabber.

Great advice that we all need to be reminded about Jackie, with the heat, AB, etc.
Mrs Skul, do you know more about the wound? Did they get the BB pellet out because if it's still in there, it could be very toxic. It looked like it could be just a graze that is healing though and probably scared him half to death, enough to jump out of his nest.

Thanks for Posting the Pictures Astra. He is looking really good. He had just finished eating 2 1/2 cc of FV and Goat Milk Formula.
What a lucky little Boy Ralph is. :grouphug
The wound or injury appears to be healing quite well.
Just a bit of info for the non-hunters out there.
There was no "buckshot" involved.
If that were the case, the squirrel would not have survived.
If a firearm was involved, chances are it was #6 or #71/2 shot.
Both are quite small.
If the pellet is retained, it really does not pose a health hazard.
There have been literally tens of thousands of war veterans that lived normal, full lives while still carrying a lead slug in their bodies.
Please remember, the injury may not even be from a pellet, but, from the fall.
Good news.
Ralf is doing great.:)
Caretaker is a bit busy, and unable to post right now.

Glad little Ralph is doing well. Sorry I didn't see the email with the pics sooner. I've been swamped with work too. And those pics were from ten days ago so I bet Ralph is even more furry and squadorable.
