View Full Version : Needing a forever home

I am needing a forever home for a male grey approx 5-6 months old - he will have to have his teeth trimmed every month and possibly will have one of his top teeth pulled - I have mixed feelings about letting him go - but my goal was never to keep a squirrel - I find it very rewarding raising them and releasing them - I know not ever squirrel can be released but I had never planned on keeping one - I worry who I could get to take care of him when we go out of town (I don't know if my dogsitter would be willing to take care of him) (a completely grown squirrel) and plus I don't think AR is a legal state - but I do have a vet that will treat him 45 minutes from home - we have a cat that stays inside and they cannot be together - that is why she is a inside cat - cat has to stay in the garage or in son's bedroom
He is a very sweet squirrel a little skiddish at first - but he loves to play - and so far chewing has not been a problem - he is also not afraid of my poodles - he has never bitten me - but he does have some sharp claws - I have trimmed his teeth a couple of time and it has not been any problem - just wrap him up and trim - however the last teeth trimming the vet did - that is when I found out that he could never be released - his teeth do not line up correctly - and one of his top teeth curve under - these will have to be watched carefully
I would be willing to drive 5 hours 1 way to meet anyone that would give him a forever GOOD home
I would keep if him - if I had to - but I would love for him to find a home were he will receive a lot of attention and be greatly loved
Please help if you can
Thanks - Robin

Wish I could help but I am too far, and have way more squirrels that I meant to have as it is!
I love them all dearly, but it's an inevitable result of rehabbing that we end up with some that need us forever.
I know I was resistant to keeping squirrels at first but now I can't imagine my life or my family without them.
Is there any possibility you can keep them?
If not, one suggestion I can give, since you are willing to transport up to 5 hrs away,
is to be more specific of how far you can go (what cities, states).
That way if someone is interested it will let them know options.
Good luck!

me too...I have the best friends, all sqs, all NRs.
I love my life with sqs, but I am full too.
I have an NR for every year I have rehabbed, ten plus the latest two, so 12. Emma and Nigel are my new kids.
I don't regret it at all...
love them all, I even take bites just so I can show Scout how much I love him...little mini monster that he is,,, my sweet vicious dwarf!:D
plus I have three temporary roommates, Wayne and Garth and The One and only Henry..
however, if he showed up on my doorstep, I would bring him in and get him some sheets and a pillow!...
you should have sent him with that singer:sanp3 :rotfl
keep tryin'...the younger they are when they are adopted the easier the transition.
Look at Ricky Richard Ricardo...me and him were so lucky when Merideth said she couldn't and Kelly Brady went to see him..
a love story ever since...
someone wants to fall in love with your little guy!

I really dont mind keeping him - its just that I hate to see him in the cage - I cannot let him run free in the house - I would feel awful if something happened to him - I am also thinking that I will not be able to release Little Man either - he is so small for his age and I don't think he will grow anymore - he is twice as old as Nougie and is half the size - really - but let me tell you he has a very very large set of nuts - I can post pics if you don't believe me - seriously
Squirrelgurl if you are really serious - I really might take you up on your offer
Let me do some thinking - or see if anyone else can possibly take him
Thanks everyone

just thinking here: why would he need the run of the house?... maybe, it would be more feasible and easier for you to have one squirrel-proof room and let him out in that room for a couple of hours when you are there?...
it does not have to be the entire house...
I hope, something works out either way...:grouphug

The way my house is layed out is very awkward - the kitchen dinning and den are all open and together - we have a flat screen tv mounted on the fireplace and for some reason every squirrel I have ever had - wants to get back behind the tv and there are many wires back there - that we can't get to - but the squirrels can and on top of that - we have a open staircase
And plus I have 3 poodles - they don't bother the squirrels - and we have a cat - and she can't be in the same room with them - so I am constantly asking where is the cat - where is the cat
This is why I was trying to find him a forever home

I hear you...
I have difficult living arrangement also, not like yours but still not very squirrel friendly.
My little guy is limited and so his play area is limited.
I have cardboard panels that are 8' by 3'.
I put 4 to 6 of them together to make a coral which he can play inside, I build this everyday so everyday it is different.
If I had a squirrel that was more mobile it would not work.
The house is all open, dogs and an 87 year old mother :D who doesn't understand why its in the house.

We have 4 cats, 2 dogs and 2 squirrels. You have to be careful, but it can be done. I built big screens with a wood frame with just regular window screen material that fit the opening between my dining room and living room from floor to ceiling. Only took about an hour to build 2 of them. Very simple. My NR can run around in the dining room and kitchen without worry of where the cats are. He gets an hour or so each morning to run around and then back in his cage. His cage is big though. 5ft cube on all sides by 6ft tall. He's disabled, so that size cage works well for him.

well in the den are nigel, sarah, emma, Fido the dog, and three babies!

Actually it's getting good..I have recently kicked out 15 since the new year started. I can see walls again in small sections!

Sorry to divert, but wondering if you can post pics of your screens and how you made them and keep them upright?
I want to do something like that with my screened porch.
It's very large and I was planning to somehow close off one end for my squirrels to run around and get sunshine while still safely inside.

Yes I'll get a picture tomorrow and post. The screens aren't designed to be used unsupervised, so not sure if I would use something like this between my squirrels and the wild outdoors, but inside they work great.

Sassy, I am more than happy to help out. There are not many I've found around here that understand my squirrel love, LOL. I have the same problem with Cami and our dogs and cats. Her cage is in the kitchen/LR area, but she gets to go to my bedroom every day for a couple of hours. It has been deemed an ONLY SQUIRRELS area and so far it's worked. No TV in there (yet) but if we put one in there I can do it right from the get go and hide the wires. She is really good about getting on my shoulder from her cage and then she knows once the bedroom door is shut is RUN TIME! But yes, holler at me if you ever need any help. I'm not a licensed rehabber, but I'm a good extra pair of hands and I learn quick!

Here's a picture of one of the screens I made. You have to make it snug enough to fit the space. In my case, I have a gate behind it for the dogs and it fits snug so I don't need anything to hold it upright. When not in use, I slide it behind my hutch.

Great idea, I think I can use something like that to have the squirrel rooms open to the hallways
for better ventilation and to keep an eye on them more :D
I had thought about putting in screen doors but it got complicated with the frames.
The space I was planning to close off on the porch is a lot wider though,
not a doorway. I think like 10 feet wide, so I basically need to build a wall
and have some sort of door in and out.
I would reinforce with hardware cloth in the porch area to prevent anyone from escaping PLUS any intruders,
cause my releases have been known to sneak in now and then to raid the nut jar. :D
Sassysquirrel, I hope that you can find a wonderful home for your squirrel,
but if not, realize that many of us have found our own unique ways to
make them fit into our lives, and truly our lives have been better for it so don't despair!

DJ, yeah with the screen it really only works indoors. The hardware cloth would definately be the way to go for outdoor use. You can also strategically place the horizontal supports, so you can slide a chair up to it to support the screen if you need it.
Busysqrl
03-04-2012, 01:35 PM
For our squirrel room we actually took the regular door off the hinges and created a new door with a frame and hardware cloth. Hubby got fancy with it and sliced a groove in the middle of the wood so the hardware cloth could 'slide' in and not have to be stapled. It was a BEAR getting it to slide in, but it looks very nice. Here's a picture of that one.

I'm pretty new to this, but I believe this board saved my fuzzers life and, if I can I want to help. I have a male NR Eastern? Gray (a dwarf I think maybe) that was plopped in my lap in September (I'll try to make our long overdue introduction this Sunday or Monday-dont worry, we have a lot of pictures) so I'm hesitant to jump into another NR but I hate to sit by when I may be able to help- first, I have some questions that I don't really have time to research, so if anybody would help with answers I appretiate it. Since I already have a male will another male present problems. Especially since my guy already thinks he's the biggest BA on the planet. If they are likely to fight I can't always be there to stop it and I can't allow anything to hurt him (I know you all understand). Also I'd like to know a little more about his problem with the teeth. How bad can it get? I don't mind trimming teeth and my father is a vet- he is just quite a ways from where I live- so if it could present emergency problems it may be a problem. Thanks again

I have to apologize. I thought I could talk my girlfriend into taking in this little guy but we decided we shouldn't be taking in another one while we are still learning the ropes of squirrel parenthood. Again I'm sorry for giving false hope, but it is probably better for all involved if we don't adopt him right now.

I am willing to drive to Memphis, TN, the other side of Dallas,TX, Waco,TX, Fayetteville, AR, Jackson, MS, Lafayette, LA, McGehee, AR and my husband travels a lot - and he is in the Houston, TX area often
He needs to find a home as soon as possible - I don't have the time that he needs to get adjusted to being a NR - he is starting to pace in his cage - and this just breaks my heart - my set up right now I am not able to let him out of his cage for very long periods of time - and he is starting to get hard for me to handle - as he does not want to go back into his cage - he definitely has to have his teeth trimmed atleast once a month - and he may have to have one of his top teeth pulled - I am willing to help with some of the expense if he has to have that tooth pulled
I would appreciate any help anyone can offer
Thank you - He is getting older and wanting more freedom

Hello Robin,
I am writing from Topeka, Kansas, which is in the NE part of the state and 9 hours from Little ROck, AR. I have been reading about your little squirrel and wishing I could take him for you. I am a retired wildlife rehabilitator, raised and released many squirrles over the years. I had a grey for 9 years that was not releasable, and loved him more than I can tell you.
Would there be anyone who might be willing to travel to Topeka? I have an outdoor cage that is LARGE (6 feet tall, in diameter, and every way) it has a roof to protect from rain, a nest box and a real tree growing in the cage.
If I took him, he would be a pet, a member of the family. He would be allowed in the house too, but mostly his need for sun, climbing, and fresh air would necessitate his being in the outdoor enclosure.
What do you think? My only caveat is that I need to make sure my husband is ok with this. I will discuss with him tonight and you think on how we could connect. How does that sound?
Thank you

Oh my gosh robin he looks identical to newt. I'm not kidding. I will stick a pic of the newtypooty up here so everyone can see. Is this little boy we talked about the other day? He sure is a pretty one. Newt is now 9 months old and is getting fat around his middle. He so funny. Curlie chases him its hilarious to watch. This morning they were running around and my husband had left a can of pringles on the floor. It had maybe 2 or3 chips left. Curlie grabbed it (they both have a bad habit chewing caps off everything). She was trying to get that lid off and my husband went to get it from her and she took off with it running dragging that tube with her I about died laughing it was so funny. Funniest thing I've seen in a while.
