Ellie, who is also a Foxer gets uhm rather "fluffy" (aka fat/large) in the winter. Last year I was so upset...I thought I was feeding her WAY TOO MUCH, I did change her diet slightly (and I do mean SLIGHTLY) but come Spring, all of her fluffiness went away and she was quickly sporting her bikini body. I made a mental note of this process and she did it again this year. Her current diet is the Henry's Healthy Diet and she gets 2 HHB's per day and it is still the slightly modified version from last year. Maybe it's just the way Foxers are??? Maybe???

I am anxious to see pics of Mavryc to see if he's all puffy like Ellie was last year...cause I think Mavryc is about as old as Ellie was last year at this time.

Not that I know anything about foxers but they do seem to get fluffier in the winter like MM said...have you seen Tomcics' foxers???

yeah, what everyone said.

Foxers tend to become chunkier in winter... rather chunkier, I'd say, than other tree squirrels :)
If he follows the Healthy Diet for Pet Squirrels and eats his daily allotment of blocks, I would not change that. If some slight modifications are due, that's ok, like Milo's Mom did. But overall, if he eats the Diet and has the correct number of blocks per day - that should not change.

Another thing you could do is add more exercises to his daily routine.
It's always good, for any species, including humans ;)

I weigh myself, then I pick up the squirrel and weigh myself again. Then it is just subtraction. What's the big deal?:dono :shakehead

I know how much P weighs (2 pounds +/-) and knew I was looking at at LEAST twice that. When I am in the basement and they jump down onto the deck from the 2nd floor it sounds like someone has dropped a bowling ball...:rotfl

Um...Mister P (he doesn't have his doctorate...yet) weighs 2 pounds. I had a bunch of big bruiser wilds this winter that were easily half again to twice his size! They look like woodchucks...

MM...it is completely normal for your foxer to look rather plump in the winter. I have a large digital scale...so once in awhile I can manage to get a foxer weight....if he stays still long enough that is. Rockys last weigh in was 3 weeks ago or so....and he's at 3.4 pounds. In the spring and especially summer...he stays right at 3 pounds. Thats almost a 1/2 pound difference depending on seasons. He is by no means the biggest squirrel I have seen here. Remember that the animals size will vary with their natural climate....ie....generally the colder the climate...the bigger the animal. I think foxers tend to be more plump than greys or reds just naturally. Im my observance...they seem a bit lazier than the greys I've seen....and are no comparison for reds.

Interesting about the block and peanut butter CritterMom.....I bet the wilds appreciate the nutrition with the added protein and fat...to help boost them through hard times...I'll have to give this a try! :grouphug

it's just that one time CrM shared an article about him, but a few of us, including me, thought it was about Mister P, so hence, Dr P (I am sure, the human Dr P would be flattered ;))

Mavryc looks so like a regular winter foxer
Besides, sitting on one's haunches does not make anyone look slim (please, find a more flattering angle ;))

Have you had a chance to weigh Mavryc?

In the beginning of September Ellie was 775 grams and yesterday she was 922 grams...she puffed up like this last year too.

She is 1 1/2 years old.

Do you actually think that Ellie sits on a scale for me? :rotfl:rotfl:rotfl:rotfl:rotfl Funny Girl!!! There is NO WAY ON GODS GREEN EARTH that Ellie will ever sit on a scale for me.
I wrap her up in a big piece of fleece and stuff her and the fleece into a little bucket (the bucket is one that I got 8lbs of FV in) then I place the bucket on the scale and record the weight. Then, I allow her to escape and she gets a treat & a kiss, and I weigh the fleece and bucket then subtract the weight of the fleece & bucket from the weight I recorded earlier...thus leaving me with her weight.
This is the only way I have ever been able to weigh her...she always gets stuffed into a little bucket! But, Shhhhhhh, DO NOT tell the Princess that her Mommy stuffs her into a bucket.:rotfl
