Jackie in Tampa (or anyone else out there who knows a knowledgeable and reasonable vet in St. Petersburg)...

A fellow rehabber has a squirrel with a damaged tail. She has him on antibiotics and is applying Neosporin. The tail has been damaged for some time and would probably be best amputated. Jackie, once when talking with you, you mentioned some vets to me. One was Dr. Theresa Lightfoot and the other was Dr. Hefner. I forget which one you said to call first or if it mattered.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Kelly Brady in St. Petersburg has a vet she loves. I'll send her a PM with a link to this thread.

DR.Zelner in StPete will be more affordable than TLightfoot at FVS in Tampa. Kelly Brady and Grinn both love her.
My vet will also do amputations in south Tampa, and my surgeon of choice in south Pasco is Dr Nick Maldenado.
Hope this helps and that the outcome is good for the squirrel.

Thoughts are with the little baby and its tail.

Make sure Dr. knows that it is for rehabbing and not a pet squirrel. She has been very nice with pricing for the fact that I am releasing. Also can't hurt to mention my name which is Kelly Brady.

My Non release Richard, is a different story as it should be. He is my pet so to speak. Or I am his pet?????:rotfl

Hi Kelly - Actually, this youngster is a nonreleasable. The poor little guy has had a rough time of things. He was turned over to my friend by someone who knew nothing about squirrel nutrition so, unfortunately, he suffered with MBD. Despite eating properly since then, he still has difficulties with 'normal' squirrel activities. It's possible that there are some other issues as well. I'll keep everyone posted...he has an appointment today at 3:00. Keep your fingers crossed for him.

Thanks again!

Oh my heart has a special place for former MBD non releases which is Richard (he has his own thread in sucess stories) He came to Jackie in bad shape. Jackie brought him out of the MBD and then I adopted him from Jackie.
He is doing very well. With a proper diet he is better and better all the time with his activity levels and ability to move and jump etc. He is the little love of my life:grouphug

Dr. Z sees him often for teeth trimmings. She loves to give kisses to all of the squirrels.

I can't wait to hear how things go with your friends squirrel.

Hope all goes well with the vet appt. today. I have heard such great things about this vet, I know your friend and the squirrel are in great hands. Fingers are crossed and prayers said for this little one.

Marcia took Oliver in yesterday for his appointment and was absolutely thrilled with Dr. Zellner! She was even able to remove the damaged part of the tail in the same visit. Oliver went home and was happy, eating and sporting a cute little bobtail. Thanks everyone for all the info and suggestions. I know I will definitely take my squirrel kids to Dr. Zellner from now on and Marcia said she will be doing the same.

It's so funny...you ought to see my little 'keeper'...Kita (my blind squirrel) is inside my shirt playing around as I type this. She's about 6 months old now and sooo precious! You gotta love 'em! :rotfl

:thankyou
