I just got this sweet little baby (Nim) over the weekend. She's eight weeks old. Tonight I didn't see her paw get caught in the lid of the nest box when I put her in. I walked away to do something and thought that the gnawing sound I heard was just her chewing on a nut but I came back and found she was trying to get her paw out of the lid. Now the paw (front left) is limp and she's not putting any weight on it. It has been about forty minutes. I called an emergency vet and they said it would be $215 just to have her seen, and another $200 for an xray. If I really have to I'll do it but is there anything else I can do? Can anyone give any advice? I'm absolutely devastated over this and don't know what to do.

Where abouts in Florida are you. Are we talking about a grey squirrel or a flyer?

I'm in Gainesville. It's a flying squirrel.

Let me see if we have any members in that area that could possibly take a look at your little one.

Can you email me so that I can give you information on a member that we have in Jacksonville?

Thank you so much. She's still eating and drinking and when I touch the affected limb she doesn't jerk away but she's still visibly favoring it.

I hope she is better soon, it could just be badly bruised.

Don't panic too much I have only had one flyer but it was all about her foot for several months she ended up loosing it but it never slowed her down. I am not sure how much a vet could do with such tiny little bones exept maybe micro surgery!! Just meds for inflamation and the members here can sure walk you through that. I hope it all turns out ok for her.

She's sleeping in the crook of my arm now now so I guess I can at least take that as a sign that she's not in any horrible pain? i just want to know if the limb really is broken. But if it is, gosh. What can be done? She's so tiny!

Did you get the number I sent to you? She is in vet school so perhaps she can help you determine if it's broken....:dono

Yes I did, thank you. I sent her an email. It was also just brought to my attention by my housemate that our neighbor does squirrel rehabilitation so I'm going to get in contact with her as well.

Skeeter hurt her paw last week, and did the same thing, she was in the crook of my arms for like 2 1/2 hours. I think it was her nail on one of her fingers. There was dried blood, but anyhow, after a few days she was running around but she wasnt putting any weight on it. Then after another couple days, she started putting weight on it. I would maybe watch her for the next day and if she doesnt improve then I would seek some professional help. The most horrible thing was, after she was walking on it just fine, i stepped on her paw, not hard, but the same one. I felt terrible. But she is going strong.
Maybe this may ease your mind for a bit :dono
But I sure hope all is well soon. :Love_Icon

Also, would Esbilac formula be ok to give to her? I ordered some Fox Valley but it hasn't arrived yet and in the mean time I was wondering if Esbilac would be ok. She's pretty much weaned but it's more of a comfort thing now if I understand it.

Probably goat's milk formula would be better. Recipe is available here, I will look for it for you.

If that is the only formula that you have handy and you ordered the FV I would give that to her if it comforts her....there is a goats milk recipe here that I can post if you want, is she used to the Esbilac?

3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt

Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.

Jackie (Jackie in Tampa) has graciously offered her temporary replacement formula recipe.
Jackie's Goat Milk Recipe
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup dannon all natural vanilla yogurt

Mix well and keep in a covered plastic or glass container in the refrigerator. Replace after 48 hours.
Please note, this website has several links that still mention Esbilac and we need to keep these links active as they do contain excellent information so please keep in mind that Fox Valley is now the formula of choice for raising baby squirrels.

I will try the goats milk recipe. :) As far as I know she has never had Esbilac, only Fox Valley.

OK then I would NOT give Esbilac...Do you have 1 cc syringes? We have a member here that sells syringes and nipples along with Fox Valley. http://henryspets.com She is also in Florida, and ships fast, you would probably have it by Wed. if you order now...:thumbsup
