I vote molt. The skin is red, inflamed, kind of rough and scaley looking with mange. It LOOKS sore. This doesn't. With our winter/no winter this year I expect we are going to see some funky molts.:dono

:thinking

Do you think that it will be better to wait and observe it ?

Pola comes by like that about every spring. I panicked the first few times, but nothing seemed to come of it each time.

I vote yes. I recently saw mange in person, and it is nasty. It is hard to mistake it for anything else. But it also takes a while to really show up with the fur thinning for some weeks or months before balding occurs. It doesn't look like it, but if it is mange, you will know soon enough.

Update from Penny's dad:

:thinking

.................................................. ......................
Hello Iwonka,

I think that Penny's condition may be getting worse.
Before the balding of her back was straight down her back, but now it seems it is across her back from her left side to the right side with some redness.
what is interesting is that we have about a dozen squirrels that visit us and among others that I see in the neighborhood and Penny is the only one that I notice with this condition!

what do you think?

Joe.

looks like mange to me - very typical area: shoulders, back...
:thinking
the redness, scalieness and all other visible signs of mange often do not become prominent till much later, further into the disease... I know, it's hard to tell in the beginning, but this looks like mange to me:thinking

This looks like the early stages of mange to me too. With the temps we've had and all that humidity I suspect we will see quite a few cases of it this year :(
