Hi all,
My neighbors just brought me 2 newborn baby Squirrels, without fur or eyes opened. They are not injured. The neighbors were cutting their tree when a large ball of moss fell out. It's a Squirrel nest.I am going to go outside and see if I can find the Mama, but if I don't,I am going to need help!I have the nest, and am keeping the babies warm as I take them out to see if the mother comes around. It's going to get pretty cold tonight though...I'm in St.Petersburg Florida
:grouphug hope she comes for them... they have 2 nests usually .... also glad that you're keeping them warm... she won't take them if they're not....

Hi Skwely
Most members are at the Gathering in Orlando
can you put them in a box on the ground near were their tree was, if mamma dosn't come, in a couple of hours bring them in. WATCH IT THOUGH, there are many hawks and other predators around.
you will need pedialyte and a 1cc syringe
a heating pad that doesnt run off, under 1/2 of the box so if they want to wiggle off it they can.

Yes what G said, they must be kept warm. pedialyte must also be warm.
put fleece in the boxfor them to cuddle up in

Thanks,I had already called the store, they gave me a number to call, and that person gave me Jeffs' number.
I called him and left a message,but have'nt had a response.
I went outside, trying to find the Mother, but did'nt have any response.
The sun is setting in a couple hours, and there is no nest for them now that it fell down, and it is going to be cold tonight, even for Florida.
The babies are warm, but not fed.I have no equipment even if I knew how to feed them.
They are OK for now,but will be getting hungry tonight.

ok BRING THEM IN!!
Put them in a small box with some fleece or t-shirt and put a heating pad under 1/2 of it on low, if you don't have a heating pad, get a sock put some uncooked rice in it and microwave it for about40 seconds, just to warm it.
If you don't have rice get a bottle of water , warm it and put it in a sock, make sure the lid is tight so not to spill on the babies.

do you have any syringes?
You can go to your local pharmacy (CVS or whatever) and tell them that you have newborn kitties to feed whom mother cat rejected. So, you need some 1cc syringes.
They usually give them to you for free (at least that's what some of our members did).
Then, there is a homemade hydrating fluild recipe here that you can use.
Once you bring them in, it is important to hydrate them as dehydration can be deadly, worse than starvation.
So, for now:
1. if mother is not coming and it's getting dark and cold, bring them in
2. set up a heating pad as SSM described
3. get some syringes from a local pharmacy
I will get the homemade hydrating recipe for you
and will point out to the instructions on how to feed them

here is the recipe:
home made pedialyte
1 quart warm water
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
as much as s/he will take as often as s/he will.
Every couple of hours
no more than 24 hours

If you don't hear back from anyone, I am in Tampa and could take them if someone could bring them to me. Another option would be to call some of the emergency vet clinics and ask if they have rehabbers on call for baby squirrels. If I can help, PM me.

just in case you end up having to feed them, here is a thread with good photos of how to hold a baby and feed:
http://www.thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32881
photos are on page 15 - posts 290, 293 and page 16 - 308.
Burrito him, hold upright (never on his back), point the syringe up, go very, very, very, very slowly one drop at a time - they tend to suck strongly and ravenously and risk sucking more than they can swallow which can lead to aspiration pneumonia.
So, make sure you are the one controlling the flow and not the baby

Do you have them on a heating pad set on low. Put the pad half under the container, in case they get too warm, they can crawl off. Put plenty of fleece or an old nightgown in, nothing with loops though they can catch their nails.:thumbsup

hi Skwerly, kelly Brady in St pete says to call Animal House pet Store in St Pete -- they have rehabbers on standby to take baby squirrels. If at all possible try to reunite them with the mamma, by keeping them warm in a box where she can see/smell them before dark.

as all previous posts show the re-union did not happen.
Some numbers that were called are not responding.
Two babies are in need of immediate help and it is in FLORIDA where the "squirrel gathering" is happening at the moment

Skwerly I apologize for sounding as if i did not read your posts, but the fact is I did not read all of them because I am in a seminar. I received urgent messages about your babies and asked the entire group here at the meeting if anyone was going back to St pete and could take them from you. Unfortunately, nobody is. So we are trying to get you any info we can about GOOD rehabbers in your area. here are a couple more options:
* Penny Boehme - st pete, 727-323-0047
* Wildlife haven Rehab - Odessa FL -- 813-792-8511
* Wildlife Inc -- Bradenton beach - 941-351-8759
i truly hope these folks can help you and those beautiful babies. they are the closest wildlife centers to you that accept mammals; the others are birds only.

No problem,we are all just worried about the babies,I know.
Well,I just got off the phone with the rehabber that the pet store recomended to me,and she lives only a few minutes away!
She does'nt belong to TSB,and I told her that it may just be temporary, until someone from the Squirrel Board could get them, and she said OK.
So I am going to take them to her for now,and later,if I get ahold of
Penny or someone else,we can transfer the babies to them, but right now,
I just want to get them to someone who has the equipment(and experience)
to feed them as it has been 3 hours since I received them.

Here is the good news.As I was going out the door,Jeff(AEMJ) called, and said that they had a place for the babies.Jeff knows the lady I was taking them to,so I took them to her,and she fed them.
Jeff and Laurie his wife came to pick them up just a few minutes ago. They are in good hands. The babies were only a few days old,one still had remnants of the umbilical.
Now the bad news. There are two baby Squirrels that are Motherless, and a Mother Squirrel that will never see her babies again.
I am just glad that the babies were not injured, and hopefully, will live long lives. Thanks everyone for the help.
