HELP!!!!!!!!!...I think I broke my squirrels foot. We cleaned the cage and she was pissed. She attacks us when that happens and normally, I'm the alpha dog. But Mike was screaming to close her cage door...a big wooden door and I slammed it as she was attempting to come out. She's holding her foot and creaking at us. we don't have a vet that treats squirrels. What should I do it was hit so hard. Its' a front paw..OMG I'm freaking.

Are you sure it is broken? Will she let you hanlde her to check it? Keep her quiet. Where are you located, maybe someone is close to you that can take a look at it.

Sorry for the delay. We found a vet but couldn't get her in the carrier tonight. She escaped and went in the couch. I'm in Indiana. We put the cats down the basement--where my computer is--until we got Seymore in her smaller cage to take to the vets. The computer is in the basement, therefore, I couldn't come down lest the boys got out.
Since it took so long, he called back and said wait until the morning. Her forearm is swollen and has a mark where the wooden door trapped it. She's pissed as heck at us and just chatters at me. She did climb with it--that's what Mike said-- but I haven't seen her using it. Except to hold a blueberry, but she more or less used the other arm to put it there. The vet said her adrenalin might allow her to use it, even to run. I'm just sick. It was my fault and I feel miserable. She's still eating but is very very unhappy.
The rush to close the door was because she attacks us every time we clean her cage and touch her stash. It was looking like a pig sty in there and when she went back in and found it messed with-wham Squirrel power. She's almost 6 months old, just waiting for it to warm for a release.
Oh, I forgot to mention--she's a tiny piney. She seems to be holding up under the stress. She gets 1 hour free exercise in the morning and one hour in the evening. The first 15 minutes is find the food. I sprinkle food around (I break up the Henry's) --plus put a bowl out with food (the veggies and fruit) the we play. Her favorite game is loud and ruckus called "I'm going to get you--I'm going to get you--Oh no the wild squirrel caught me instead."
thanks for the responses. There's no way I can feel that arm. She's way too angry and I'm sure in pain.

I know that attitude :rotfl
I put mine in a different cage before I clean, but I clean out his cage Everyday.
Can you give her some infant ibuprofen? will help with pain and swelling.
Do you know how much she weighs?
can you post a picture of her arm

I doubt that she'll take the ibuprofen. We have her confined in her bedroom cage. She has three cages. A play/storage cage-her bedroom cage and they're held on a higher shelf in a 4'X2' by 8' cage. The bottom of the cage is leaves and natural environment with a tree. I took her into the bathroom while we did some the cleaning and repairs. She was releasable until this. I'm so hoping it's not broken but I don't know how it wouldn't be. I hope she went under her blanket for the night but don't know yet. Mike's with her now. I'm giving our cats some love to appease them.

Thank you. He was concerned that too much excitement would cause her to be worse too. I hope we're fretting for nothing but it looks bad to me. My daughter consoled me tonight and said that she's slammed her arm in a car door and it swelled and looked awful but nobody had to amputate it and it wasn't broken. It isn't dangling but is extremely swollen.
She's going through a rough spot. She rescued Bailey from being put down because he was part wolf--he was a combo wolf and husky--Had him for 10 years, he got along with her cats too. Two weeks ago he had a stroke. After two weeks, he was getting worse and the vet recommended euthanasia because she was sure he had a brain tumor that caused the stroke. So last week was my turn to talk her through a trauma and this week it's hers. Thank God for cell phones.
I guess now for Seymore, all I can do is pray. Thanks everybody. I'll know at 8 am what's going on.

HOOOOOOORAAAAAAY! After a harrowing night trying to coral our little critter--who now took up residency in the underside of the couch/hide-a-bed, we finally got her confined this morning at 10:30 and took her to the vet...Just getting home 3 hours later. He takes wild life and didn't charge a thing, primarily because she's a release animal. He also gave some very helpful tips and let us know little piddling near her food is marking not a bladder infection. (Except now she loves craisins) AND----NO BROKEN BONES!! Just a big big bruise.
Thank you all for your support. Seymore is fit as a fiddle and ready to run. She even forgave me and sat on my shoulder and preened my hair to let me know. We tricked her into the cage with a potato chip and a pine cone. She stores the pine cones but gobbles up the chips. We were out of avocado but that would have worked too.

I love threads like this.....what seems so dire turns out to be not so bad at all, and another precious little fuzzy tail will be running in the trees again soon. Good job, adoptedmother! :bowdown:alright.gif

I'm now freaking out over the cage door. This is like going through motherhood all over again. (My daughter had febrile convulsions that almost killed her and I got this same sick feeling every time she even looked like she might run a fever in the next week or so.) As far as the chips go, she doesn't normally get them. She developed a taste for them when she had a morning romp right after Mike had chips and left crumbs. That's why it was so effective in luring her back into the cage. (Even avocado wouldn't work at that time. We were desperate!)
This incident made me realize that I'm not cut out for this--even though I knew it before--I'm too freaked out over the potential for anything happening. Yes, if I could have raised my daughter in a bubble--I would have. I do know better, just can't help it. Crums, I fell out of trees, rode on the hood of a car at 50 MPH and did all sorts of stunts growing up and made it to my senior years.
