I saw this squirrel a week or so ago and could easily tell that she had some trouble eating. She was mostly licking out of the side of her mouth and not seeming to use her front teeth. I initally thought maybe her front teeth were too long and causing an issue.
Today as my boyfriend and I were about to leave the house, he noticed her just laying in the driveway, nose down and not moving. She is obviously very sick. I was able to scoop her with little fight, no verbal stress at all. I cleaned her up as well as i could, her nose was scabbed over and eye scabbed shut. She has an obvious infection(and hole where puss was oozing) on the right side of her face that i uncovered while cleaning, her lower jaw seems "chunky" ... infection? injury? she does not move her jaw, but moves her tounge in a licking motion. I didnt weight her yet but she is surprisingly at a very health weight, my boyfriend and i were both surprised at how heavy she is.
Ive attached pictures for ya'll to see, I tried my best with the photos but she was a little difficult to pose.
Any ideas on how to treat? what her issue may be? From what we could see her teeth do not seem like they themselves have punctured her mouth, tho they are awkward.
Thanks !

oh boy,
I am not an expert, but I will send a few PMs to some who might help.
in the meantime, do you have pets or your friends/family who have pets might have antibiotics. I know that most people choose baytril?
COuld you look at what you might have in terms of human antibiotics, too?sometimes it is possible to use those.
Please keep checking here often = someone experienced will be here soon

i htink, she has malocclusion, but I will let experts confirm.
If so, she might have to be a NR - non-releasable.
Ok, lets waitfor the experts

Keep her in a dark place in a small box with a heating pad, on low, under 1/2 of it.
Use fleece for blankets, not towels
Someone will be on soon to help.
Infant (not childrens) ibuprofen for pain and swelling.
Try to clean the wound on her neck with mild soap and water.
It looks to me like she got into a fight with something bigger than her.
Can you see if her nipples are very noticeable??
she could be pregnant, that could be why she feels heavy.
astra
02-04-2012, 03:13 PM
just don't bring her to any wildlife centres yet - if she does have malocclusion, she will be euthanized.
I've sent out a few PMs, so someone should be here soon

Human antibiotics I have are:
IC Sulfamethoxazole-TMP DS TABITP
*Online pill identifier says: 800-160mg ...? Imprinted: IP 272, White, Oval.
IC Cephalexin (Keflex) 500mg capsule

She sure does need help. First, of course you want to keep her dark, warm and quiet. Stress will make everything she has going on even worse. I would not try right now to clean the wound too much -- let her rest and get warm while we try to find someone to take her. She will need antibiotics for sure; there is an abcess or two going on there. Her bloodshot eyes and blood (?) on her lip suggest an impact injury to me -- others may disagree. She may have been hit by a car, or fallen. Give her a warm blanket, sweatshirt or fleece scarf to burrow into -- no towels. Let's see who is near you that we can call!

dont give them to her, hold on till we know for sure, some humane drug are lethal to wilds ok? hang in there.

02-04-2012, 03:18 PM
I cleaned her wounds with an antibiotic soap (watered down) Provon. I did not notice her nipples being pronounced when i was handling her. She is in our "outdoor release" cage with blankets & in the heated garage so she is warm and comfortable. :)

RE: the malocclusion -- hard to tell from that pix, but if she has been down due to the abcess/infection she has not been eating properly nor chewing to keep her teeth ground down. She may have a temporary malocclusion for this reason. The cheek abcesses in squirrels can be deadly -- that, IMHO, is what we want to address ASAP.

If we work to save the squirrel versus worry about babies now, she can have babies later. If we loose the squirrel now, we loose potential babies too and also the chance for future babies.
I'd go for dosing at 1.25...right in the middle...
If both meds work together and the chance of mixing them is not going to cause additional issues...hit her with everything on hand...she is in bad bad shape. Just my opinion...cause you asked. :bowdown

we will do the sulpha trim first...the oval white tablet {bactrim}
gonna do this fast.
take two spoons, put tablet in one spoon, crush FINE with the other..
put all powder in small shallow container, perfer lidded glass baby jar
add 10 cc's water {ml and cc are the same}
mark jar 80 ml/mg and todays date
dose for 1 pound sq will be .15ml
for 1.25 lb sq will be .19ml
for 1.5 lb sq will be.22 ml
lets go...make this and shake well, never draw from the bottom
meds will settle fast so keep stirring
the first dose will be loading and dosed at .25ml
only this first dose

this is twice a day BID

add 5 cc /ml of water
stir well
dose for 1 pound sq is .12ml
ddose for 1.25 lb sq .15 ml
1.5 lb sq will be .19ml
IR is right...3x a day
I would ONLY clean that puncture with a betedine/ provadone flush using a syringe..
dilute the betedine with water to the color of tea...be careful not to get it in eyes...

I did up the Kaflex... im going to try and give it to her now.
Thank you !!!!please use both ABs..
all ABs are targeted for different type bacterias..
the correct and best AB would be Cipro/baytril..
use both these meds...
the keflex is bad on the belly so dilute yogurt to a syringeable consistancy,
feed her that with a wee bit of dry FV powder mixed in it...
as much as she will take...
give her water after...
keep her cozy warm...do not allow her to be hot though, she has fever.:thankyou :bowdown
hold her upright...she needs to swallow, not choke...not sure how dibilitated she is..
is she resisting at all?
is she showing strength?

If this poor little fuzzer makes it through the night, I would take Nancy's offer :thumbsup :thankyou :grouphugditto, absolutely.
maybe try covering her eyes while you feed her...
if she is going to make it, she knows she is getting cared for.
she may be scared, but she knows.
move slow, less noise is best etc...
good luck you guys...
remember..and this I know, she will die without hydration.
she must have fluids in some form.
it's very important...life important.
If you can keep her drinking:thumbsup great!
every drop counts...
syringe in the side of the mouth deep back away from nose.
head up, allowing fluids to drain outnot into lungs if she is listless...
hydration solution is the best... pedialyte.
1 quart warm water
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
as much as she will take as often as she will.
no more than 24 hours and somewhere in there she needs that yogurt and FV...one for gut flora and the opther for nutrition ...
she must WANT to stay alive...so making her feel good is best.
she needs nutrition/full belly.
can you tell us what she is doing?
lethargic, hiding, breathing hard/heavy,twitching, seizing, on side etc..
kissle13
02-04-2012, 05:59 PM
She is lethargic, breathing is good tho, she moves around a bit but does not walk..kinda scoots around. I can just tell she is very uncomfortable. Right now she is burried under a blanket. She is in a warm area tho (near a wood stove) so she is at a good temp.
Ill try to give her some more formula again soon.

if you have a vaporizer, that would be good to run constantly...
will put moisture in the air and warmth too...
ccover the cage she is in if she is frightened.
and yes, push the hydration.
How is she doing ? I hope that she gets well soon

I just spoke with kissle13 and she just gave the little one more FV and antibiotics.
She is as comfortable as can be, while still in rough shape, but in excellent hands.
I passed along the information for dosing ibuprofen, which will make her more comfortable.
We are touching base tomorrow morning, and if this little girl feels up to it,
I will be meeting kissle half way and bringing this little one home with me,
and then up to my vet's first thing Monday morning.
Sending many prayers that she makes it through the night....
I know this little one is in excellent hands....thank you again for picking her up.:grouphug :Love_Icon :grouphug
