Sago Palms Are Toxic to animals and if your squirrel or any other pet come in contact with them there is an almost certain death, so please be careful and think twice before purchasing one. The nurseries will not tell you this as the american greed is too powerful when the changing of money is involved. Please remember this thread what ever you do and tell your friends. Squirrels nibble on the seed pods while dogs chew on the leaves. I found out the sad way. Dont let this happen to you because you now know. Please pass this warning!!

Yes, my sister-in-law's dog was killed by one of these. Dog was is the yard and when she went out she found head-deep in the middle of one. Apparently, the young palms and the sprouting part in the middle are attractive to many animals. She spent $4000 trying to save that dog and it still died of renal failure within 3days. Sago palms are dangerous to children and adults too. Even the spiney tips can cause poisoning!

We've had at least two -- possibly three -- deaths here on TSB of squirrels who nibbled on sago palm. :(

Since we have so many Florida members, I am going to make Bobby Taylor's post a sticky....

EDIT: Done. Thank you Bobby....up north we think our troubles are over when the pointsettias are gone after Christmas. It's so important to keep these warnings in front of everyone who comes here, all year round.

a running list of toxic household and yard plants would be good. I didn't even think about pointsettias!
