Hi there im currently caring for a female grey squirrel who was injured few weeks ago, and my question is whats the best material to put on the floor of the cage for her, it has wire covered floor to stop her from chewing it, she has a nice natural grass basquet to sleep in, a piece of fleece and i put a small pillow which she took all the filling out "like syntetic cotton" is this good for her, she put it in the basquet and all over the cage, basically i want to provide the best possible home for her, thanks for any advice before hand. From London.

I love the rubber backed mats. These are actually little bath mats. I put them on the wire floor and the squirrels love to rest on them and they don't skid around. Get the shorter piled ones, I have never had a problem with a squirrel catching their nails....when you put anything new in the cage, watch your squirrel for a while just to see if there will be a potential problem.:thumbsup
They love cubes like the two shown in this photo, and tons of fleece. :)

I had just switched this squirrel over to this cage, so it's pretty bare yet. BUT put in some small branches, they love to chew...Oh, and a working water bottle!

I usually will sew a few layers of fleece together, to fit the bottom of the cage, to make a sort of pad for the bottom (gives protection from falls). I have several so I can change them out every day. Yes, the pillow polyfil is fine.

(btw, great cage, Nancy!)

I have started using the rubber backed rugs (thanks Nancy). We love the rugs. No wire to walk on, food doesn't fall thru (less waste) good for wicking urine, easy to change and keep clean. Our squirrels love them.
The raccoon's are another matter--:rotfl

Anne, I know!!!! You just take them outside and shake them off! When they get soiled, throw them in the wash! And the mess really is so much less....:thumbsup
Racoon's....:rotfl :rotfl

Fleece :) It is soft and easy to clean and most times cheap to buy.
