View Full Version : injured wild
One of our wild squirrels named Split Ear, just now ran up to us with a terrible hind leg infection. She is pregnant! Just gave her a dose of Baytril, I pray it helps her and doesn't hurt her growing babies. She will stay here until healed, then be released back into our attic. Yep-our attic, warm squirrel housing for cold weather. Now to just keep an eye on her and postpone the new roof for awhile longer. Sigh--squirrels are so--so--squirrelly!
This is not the time for me to have lost our camera!

Was it a bite, do you think? I mean a squirrel bite or a cat bite.

Hi Anne, I just read a Vet manual that Baytril can damage the fetus of rodents. It states that the damage was seen in mammals at very large doses. It also said that the drug should be used particularly when the benefits out weigh the possible side effects. So that being said, I don't know. :thinking I would be inclined to give the Baytril . You could lose the mom and babies if you don't give it. :dono "Between a rock and a hard place" , I say. I wonder if others have any first hand experience with this?? :dono

Unfortunately I found this
http://www.1800petmeds.com/Baytril-prod10048.html
but most articles are for dogs and cats not squirrels.
However According to the Vet I go to and many squirrel owners on here Baytril is the drug of choice, and squirrel metabolism is different from dogs and cats.
How deep is the wound, could apply something topically like neasporine instead of oral

Anne, I was discussing this with a rehabber friend of mine being she is pregnant, not my friend, the squirrel.:D
These were her recommendaitons.
Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Clindamycin, Erythromycin, Penicillin
These are safe ABs during pregnancy...her choice would be clindamycin, eryrthromycin or keflex(cephalexin) for general soft tissue wound.

I was terribly worried about the Baytril-forgot my PCN. I so wanted to save Ear, she is truly sweet, she can always have other babies. I am not able to examine her that much--wild squirrel, never been patted, etc. But did my best while Chas held her, didn't see any wound, however the leg is huge--very swollen. Will check on her in a few minutes and will switch to the PCN.
Hate losing my camera!!!!!
