I received a call today from a gentleman that was referred to me, he is looking for a rescue, zoo or similar place for one of his three prairie dogs that has become very aggressive.... while he still likes attention and likes to be petted - he bites and can no longer be held.
IF any one knows of place that might take this little guys please let me know so euthanasia does not become their only means of resolving this issue.
Or if there is any one out there that might be able to help this gentleman with what might just be stage with this little guy please contact me so I may pass his number along to you, as he (Shawn) would really like to keep this little guy if the aggression problem can be solved.
Sex: 8 mths
Age: male
FYI - Prairie Dog was gotten from another family that did not take very good care of him and was feed the wrong food in the beginning...... Shawn took him in.
:thankyou

Do you know how old it is? PD's go into rut which is a normal process and has to do with their mating season. Neutering or spaying helps, but must be done in their first year of life to make a difference in their behaviour. This is normal behaviour and will pass.
Send me a pm with his number, I can call him.

Try Fallin Pines (Christmas FL).
http://www.fallinpinesrescue.org/
It's a beautiful place and the animals are well cared for.
Keep us posted!
Poodles aren't native to Florida.
Would have to go to natural range for that to work out OK.

It is very dangerous to release a pd back, as they are very territorial and can kill an outsider.

The little guy is just 8 mths old (he was rescued by Shawn) from another family.... and I did already inform him that this was probably a stage and would pass, hence why I suggested he talk to a rehabber that has experience with prairie dogs to help him through this.
Shawn has looked into getting the little guy neutered, but has not been able to locate a vet in the Tampa area that would do it for under $200 - I am going to give Dr Nick (the vet that neutered Marven) a call on Monday and see what he might charge.
I am sending you Shawn's number...... tell him Carolyn referred you.
He is at work atm, so leave a messge if he does not answer.
:thankyou

Just spoke to Sean, (he has done his research on pd's!) I gave him ideas to help him get through this time and we will stay in touch and I will also get him in touch with some other pd owners to help him as well.
WE had a prairie dog for many years-a male named Pogo. We loved him and have always wanted another. We can-
1-adopt him forever-
2-get him tame and back to owner-
We could take all if more than one. Diet is key with these guys and really affects behavior as well as health.
I love me some Prairie Dog--eekha

Glad I could help, you're welcome. He is very dedicated to his pd's and is willing to do what he needs to. I have to say I was very impressed with him and all he knew. He will get through this. This pd is in rut, it will pass. He has some work ahead of him, but I think with work and time, this little guy will be a wonderful little one. He is very lucky to have found his way to Sean. I will keep you posted, as we will keep in touch.
:D :D :D
i love prairie dogs too.....:D
i know that gloves have already probably been mentioned .... i'm sure...
but one thing i was thinking through all this ...is .... thank God he can't jump and climb the way a normal squirrel can otherwise we'd have to give him stoshs photo of his protection suit.
i hope that everything goes well for him .... it sounds like his owner does love him and wants to keep him.....
i also hope that we can find another homeless prarie dog for anne soon....:D

Yes, he is very commited. He has two others, females, who are total sweethearts. He did his homework before he got the two girls. He just hasn't had this experience with them, so wanted to make sure he did things right. He loves this little guy, that much is very evident. I think he will do well, he needs time and some work away from his cage. He wants to be friends, but has not had experience with it, so he goes back and forth. But he is in rut now (the biting started about a month or so ago....right on time!)
PD's are amazing, social creatures and are so much fun to have! I still miss Zeke, but know he is happy! (And I LOVE my Neeks, and although they have different personalities, I wouldn't change him for anything. He is a total love!)

Here is a link to the prairie dog lover's burrow...it's a wonderful site with one of the best PD experts in the US manning it. I have called Dianne in a pinch for expert help and she always takes the time to go over every aspect of the issue at hand in terms that one can understand. She is nearly always available. She can certainly advise your friend on behavior issues and definitely neutering is in order. PD boy's should be neutered during their first fall so he's a bit behind but not too late. WAHOO!!! :D

He wants to get him neutered, was trying to find a vet that was reasonable. I believe Carolyn was trying to help with that.
