I read someone had a litter box for their squirrel, can they be trained to use a litter box?

Some do. Some don't. My older one uses a litter box with aspen shavings in in. My little one pees where she sees fit. Just don't use anything with dust in it.
how did you train him to use the tray? i'm trying to litter train my girl by when she pees on my floor, i catch her, show her the pee then lock her in her cage for a short while, i think it's working as i seem to be doing ti less, but there is still the matter off the poops and the rest of the pees!

Quagmire was litter trained and often seeks out the box for #1 but never for #2, those just come out wherever he is. He only seeks out the litter box if it is close and convenient for him. Otherwise he just goes where he is at.
We use the recycled newspaper pellets that are in the cat litter section. They work quite nicely.
Good Luck.

I think more than showing it to her, soaking it up with paper towel and putting that paper towel where you would like her to go might be more effective. Generally animals are more scent driven than visually driven. From almost the beginning, Sammy just started using one shelf in particular in his cage and I started using extra newspaper on that shelf. I guess he showed me where the potty is... He rarely goes anywhere else either. :thumbsup
As with most things you may try to train a squirrel to do...GOOD LUCK! :jump
They are far more the trainer than the trainee in most cases!:sanp3

So true.
I didn't do anything to "train" Bushy at some point she just decided to use the litter box. The poops just happen and they do it so much that I don't think they have time...or perhaps desire to run back to the box every time they have to poop. This is probably my wife's biggest pet peeve about my squirrels. But, you have to remember they aren't cats or dogs and pretty much do what they want when they want.
