I have raised 2 male grey squirrels - 1 has returned and I can't tell which one it is - So please help if you can - I am posting pics
The first 3 pics are of the squirrel in question
The next 3 are of my precious Squrim - Squirm is approx 9 months old
The next are of my Squirrely - he is the oldest - Squirrely is approx 2 years and 9 months
Hope you can help me - I really would like to know which one it is - I am leaning more towards Squirm - but then I just don't know
Squirrely would come some what regular - he would take nuts from my hand but I could never touch him
Squirm up on his release was here everyday - then several days went by and had not seen him since
It had been several months since I have seen Squirrely - then recently the squirrel in question has been showing up - I can feed him by hand - but I have not been brave enough to try and pet him - because if it Squirrely he will bite - but Squrim never would
I dont know how to do side by side - so here they are

I have a hard time telling mine apart unless they have something that really stands out.
I have no idea how some people know their babies from the wilds! :dono
My wilds have learned from my releases to like me, so sometimes I am so confused.
I just pretend like they are ALL my special babies and I imagine they are all out in my yard fat and happy and enjoying their freedom. :flash3

I would say the squirrel in question is Squirrley. The brown stripe on his nose is lighter than the younger one, and doesn't appear to go to the tip of the nose....:dono
I think this is the same squirrel, JMO :)

They are all so healthy-looking!
One of the ways I tell my guys apart is the shape of their heads - it doesn't change the way fur color does. I have noticed two distinct head shapes in grey squirrels. One I call "egg-heads" - their heads are rounder, and the distance between eyes and nose is shorter. I would call Squirrely an egg-head.
The other shape I call "ratty" - more long and the nose is pointier, like a rat's head. The profile picture of Squirm looks more ratty.
Since the squirrel in the picture has a definite egg-head, I'm going to also vote for Squirrely.

the secret tip...
the ears...
look at the base of the ears, where they meet the head...are they wide ears ? or narrow?
then the ear heighth...tall ears, short ears?
then the shape of the ears...round, squared, pointy...
then ear placemet on head...facing outward, forward..
on top of head like crown or slung low like head band...
it's all in the ears...the ears are the give away!
wink wink!

Thanks everyone - I was just hoping that it might be Squrim - I have not seen him for 4 months - he was such a sweet squirrel - it had been approx 2-3 months since I had seen Squirrely - He had been here the longest - so it would only make more sense that it would be him - Squirrely was my very first squirrel - He was just a small juvie when we found him - He was at my moms and was just following the roofers next door everywhere they went - Mom was afraid one of the neightborhood cats was going to get him - so she put him in a cage - She kept him a few days - then I came and got him - I kept him for about a week - till I was able to find a local rehabber - they took him for about 6 weeks - then they let me have him back to release in may backyard - he has been here ever since
I just worry that I have not seen my Sassy (raised from a pinkie) since aprrox 2 months after release and the same with Squirm (raised him since right before eyes opened) - and know I have released Scrappy and Huey (raised from pinkies) - Scrappy has stayed and I see him several time a day - he has claimed a nest box close to the house - Huey only have seen maybe 4 times - not any in the last week - they have been released for month - My flyer Judy has been released a little over a week - she returns everynight/morning - she does run around at night - but returns to her cage - Little Man (raised from pinkie) I am overwintering - he was way to small to be released - I will be releasing him this spring
I guess what I am saying - I just want to make sure I am giving all my babies a chance - I do live in a neighborhood - but behind my house is woods - approx 20 acres or more
Is it possible that Sassy, Squirm and Huey just moved somewhere else??? Upon release I saw Sassy and Squrim everyday - several times a day - then just suddenly gone - nothing - no sightings at all - is this normal????? Have any of you seasoned rehabbers had this happen to you???? I just can't stand not knowing - My local rehabber tells me that this is sometimes what happens - That Sassy may have come into heat and moved on and the same with Squrim (not heat - he is a male) - I just wished I knew they were ok
Ok I will shut up now

I wintered over four last year, they were released 1 week before they turned 1 yr old. I saw them every day for a little over a week, then one by one, they stopped showing up. I had not seen them at all for three months....but now, they are all back (and yes, I know it is them, they come right up to my window to get food...lol) Don't give up hope. This is a harder year for squirrels food is more scarce (natural foods) so I think squirrels are moving around more then ever. Keep the hope, they know where home is.
