Can I give Cami fresh coconut? I am making some coconut chips for a Coconut Cream Pie, and she is acting crazy about the smell of it. I know I put coconut oil in her boo balls, but is straight fresh coconut okay?

Coconut is good for them...although Dusty got her head stuck in the one I gave her.:shakehead If I give them a whole one I will make a small hole so they can work their teeth down. It is a horrendous noise but better than having long teeth.

argh! I wish I would have known that last night! I threw the shell away :shakehead . Oh well, I guess that gives me an excuse to make another coconut pie :D So you gave Dusty the whole coconut minus the water?

sorry to threadjack, but are you saying you are making your pie with real coconut and not store-bought flakes?...
could you share the recipe, please?:tilt

Yes, I buy a whole coconut every few weeks, drain the water and let them play with it. They have their dinner and then the coconut as a treat. I don't keep it in their cages because I don't want them to have to much. Eventually I just break open the shell and give each half. You can also hang it on sisal rope with other chunks of wood or bone and make a toy.

Hi...I'm in Costa Rica and my Rama Rota eats fresh coconut quite often like wilds outside. they gnaw threw the green husk--the hard shell--and both drink the water (very healthy) and eat the white meat.
While Rama--being KING of Costa Rica--gets his Coconut already cut thru so he can get right to the meat. he drinks the coconut water from a small bowl...
he's not spoiled. ha !

Yay! I'm going to get her a coconut! I have to look and see if Jade the Quaker Parrot can have some now ;) I like getting things that work for at least two of the three veggies/fruits daily critters. I gave her a piece before I toasted it and she LOVED it. Thanks Jake and Stosh! And Stosh, Rama is not spoiled, he is KING, therefore it is his right, hehe.
Astra, here is a link to the coconut pie. It is time consuming, but oh so worth it. There is coconut in the crust, filling, and topping, and you HAVE to do the white chocolate with the coconut chips on the top, beyond fabulous.

Also here is the link to the method I used to open the coconut and get the meat in good sizes to make larger chips for the top of the pie!

Occasionally I too give Princess Ellie a few small pieces of coconut. I never offer a lot or very often as I was told that it can cause soft poops. I only use it as a treat.

Thanks Milo's Mom!
Yay! Jade can have it too! I'll prolly only do it once or twice a month and I'm going to take a page from Jake's book and only let her have it for a few hours. If she really likes the shell I can always keep that back and put it in there! Anything that helps with those teeth is appreciated! Mommy's hand is the only one who incurs their wrath for some reason!:sanp3
Astra, you are so :Welcome , let me know how you like it!

I personally wouldn't let them have the meat for a few hours. Like Milo's mom said it can cause soft poop. I let mine work at it for about 20 minutes. Depends on how much meat they get out. Don't want to upset a little tummy. The hard shells i keep in there all the time because they love chewing on it. Except at 3 AM when Dusty thinks her teeth need a trim, then I take it out!

Anyone know if coconut is ok to feed a SFS? I had read somewhere it was not good for them. Thanks!
