Hey guys, I recently got a new squirrel, he is about 10 weeks old and Im it eats some formula and some nuts. It had black solid feces on its anus and then after it pooped some more a little brown feces. Now it seems as if his anus is open, and I think i see a little blood around it. I hurts him because he wont let me check it out. Does anyone know what can I do to help him?:sanp3

could you post pictures?
what is his history?(how was he found? any wounds? etc)
what formula are you giving him?... how much?
what else is he eating?
you said nuts - what nuts?
what's in his cage? (branches - what branches, chewing toys - what toys etc).
Please describe it all in as much detail as possible.
Also, where in FL are you? don't have to tell the city, just a county or area. There are a lot of FL ppl here.

I tryed to takes pictures but he is alittle agressive. My dad works in a tree service company and they knocked his nest down. I have been giving him baby formula Similac he eats about 2tbs, and to the nuts, he eats peacan nuts. He has his blanket and some chewing toys in his cage, he is from Georgia! And I live in Lake Worth

What he has been fed is not a proper diet for a squirrel. Is that all he has been eating?

Similac is not for squirrels. He needs Fox Valley formula for squirrels. You can get that on line or one of our members sells it, she is also located in Florida, and you would get it sooner. The link is below and you will want to order the 20/50 formula.

If we can find someone to take a look at your little one, would you be willing to let them see him? Was he the only survivor besides his sister? Nuts are not good for them either. They need vegetables, and rodent block.

I've contacted a few FL people directing them to your thread - let's wait a bit.
In the meantime, could you describe more in detail about the poop?:
when did it start?
When did the blood appear? - before the blood, was he pooping ok, or was he straining?
Do you stimulate him after and before feedings?
Did he look constipated?
How is his peeing? Colour, smell?
Does his poop smell really bad or a normal poop smell?
What was his behavior like before and during these poop problems? how did he act? active, anxious, lethargic, upset, uncomfortable, as usual, chattering etc?
Similac is not a good formula.
The best formula for them is Fox Valley, available at www.henryspets.com or www.foxvalleynutrition.com
He does not need nuts right now - will be best if you remove all the nuts.
He needs a good rodent block (will post more info later).
Please keep checking - someone experienced will on here soon.

Dark poos - stuck inside, blood, etc., sound like constipation - he likely is somewhat dehydrated. I would give him a rehydration fluid for the next half a day and then supplement him with water feedings. Wet fruit like watermelon can help, too.
You can make home made rehydration fluid from
1 teaspoon salt
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 quart water
Do not give them this for more than 24 hours. If they will not take the plain water, you can use this recipe WITHOUT the salt.

Okay, I shall try to order some soon. I really didnt know much about squirrels and thier diets untill now and yes I would let someone see him. He doesnt seem to like veggies.
His poop are little balls like stuck together, they come out like for say beads, which keeps his anus open. I dont know what his poop looked like before, he was given to me last week. I dont know what his poop or urine smelled like either, I can say the poop does have a stong smell. The blood is only around the opening of the anus, it looks more red than like blood.

if he was constipated before, he must have been straining and that caused the redness on his anus.
if you give them nuts, they won't eat veggies ;-). That's why no nuts till they start eating veggies and even then, nuts are only treats.
Can you drive?... because we have a lot of experienced ppl in FL who are overwintering lots of squirrels and it would be best if your little guy could live with other squirrels, learning all squirrelly things. It will also be good for his release - to have a release buddy (or buddies).
How far are you from Tampa?

it takes time for them to start liking veggies.
Try sugar snap peas, zucchini, avocado (just no pit and no skin - these are toxic), broccoli, Belgian Endive, kale, brussel sprouts, chicory.
Try cuces again - he might like them eventually.
Just don't give him any nuts right now, until he comes to like veggies.
I've also contacted some other FL people - to see who is the closest to you.
Will you be able to meet someone half-the-way? How far are you able to drive?
