View Full Version : Male Flying Squirrel Problem

My husband and I have been raising 4 abandoned flying squirrels for about 3 weeks now. Everything has been fine until the past week our males penis has grown at an alarming rate. It is about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch on a 6-7 week baby squirrel. I was making jokes until last not I ran across this forum. I read how it could be from the others sucking or from him inflicting the harm on himself. I saw where I needed to see if there was a scab and there was one. I then tried to soak him in warm shallow water and he did not like this at all. I do not even think that I was able to hold him in the water for 30 seconds without him scurrying up my arm. I'm surprised he did not bite me and it took him a couple of hours crawling on me like a tree before he would even let me hold him in my hands. I did manage to get some antibiotic ointment on it and made sure he went to the bathroom. I also tried the baby sock thing and of course I could not get it around him.

I do not think that the others are sucking but from him humping the others every chance he gets. It does not matter what girl it is! When we feed them and he is not being fed he is humping someone. When we play with him or one of the other and put them in the cage he starts humping them. When he's in there by himself he's humping the cage. I finally got to the point yesterday when I took all three girls at once and left him in the cage with no one to hump to give them a break. His sexual urges are getting a little out of hand and nonetheless the girls look traumatized at times. The only time he stops is when we take him out of the cage to play or he if is sleeping. We are going to try and separate them but have no means to do so now. We are in the process of building a larger cage. I was just wondering if the enlarged penis could be do to his over willingness to hump everything in site and if anyone else has ever come across this problem. Also, is there is anything I can do to stop him?

Im not 100% positive but I think that 6-7 week olds dont usually have that urge...How did you get them? Are you positive about there ages?

where there eyes open when you found them? Their eyes open at 5 weeks

They were thrown out or they had fallen out of a pecan tree. There has been a lot of clear cutting in the area and their habitat has been decreased significantly. We warmed them and placed them back outside but the mom was running around them with no interest at all. Their eyes were open when we got them but were still pink on their bellies. They are just now to the point that they are eating solid foods. I may be wrong with the weeks but I know they were not full grown.

The male flyer I had last year, Jack, started "humping" my female, Tippy at about 7 weeks or so. I even mentioned it here on the board several times. But he never had any issues with his penis, that I could see. Hopefully, Muffinsquirrel or the Skuls or Miriam will be on here soon. They are this boards flyer gurus, without a doubt. Flyers open their eyes at 4 weeks so you might be off on their ages by a week or so.

that is how flyers play...they piggie back..i have seen five flyers running around hugging each others waist...cute cute cute!!!
i think flyers open their eyes earlier than 5 weeks...around 25 days:thinking
yes, gently remove the scab after soaking, yes keep triple anti biotic ointment on it when you can,
try feeding less but more often...:thumbsup
we love pics!!!:D

I would not worry about breeding for awhile...:shakehead
are they rehabs meant for release?
or are they pets forever?

I took Jack and Tippy to Jackie in Tampa and they were almost 8 months old and it was my understanding that neither one had reached sexual maturity yet.

Hi Able :wave123
Can you send me a Picture or Post one? :thinking I bet you stopped feeding Formula! :D Sucking happens when still hungary, or they still need Formula.
Please Get them back on some FoxVally. 32/40 (I will post a link below.) He is being Sucked on, or He is Sucking him self. What are you feeding them Now?? The Flyers eyes will open at 3 to 4 weeks old. The Top tooth will be tinny but Visible at 4 to 5 weeks. (Very short & Thin.):D
They can start Tug Hugging at 2 to 3 weeks. :D They can Bread at 8 months. Usually it is later on. Just have to watch for them to come in to heat. If separated they will come into Heat every 30 days on the Button. It is best to let them ween them self. Please Do not force them off the Formula. :nono What kind of Formula were you feeding? Esbilac will starve them of important nourishment. (When feeding very Young Babies they Usually Die.)
What was the wight, when you found them? What is the weight Now. You need to Separate them and stop the sucking.
Sucking is the only thing that makes this happen. They can harm one another and even suck them inside out!
The Mother feeds the Babies 12 weeks and Older in the wild. They will Nurse Throughout the Winter.

Can you post what you are feeding them? Hear is a Link to the Nutrition section.http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=191
And a Link to a Calcium to Phosphorus Charts.http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15397You need to feed the highest Calcium number. If you feed a high phosphorus number you need to then feed more high Calcium Food. (Just make sure they are eating them.) Flyers need to be feed a High Protean high Calcium diet. Flyers Make most of their Vitamin D and need Mushrooms Daily. Protean also is a MUST every Day. This is Wax Worms, MealWorms, Freeze Dried Chicken. Vita Life Makes Chicken Poppers and Chicken Chips. Also Fresh cooked Chicken and Bones. (You can cut the bones in half until they know how to get inside them.) Eggs, and the Shell, which is a form of calcium. Feeding This with a High Calcium Fresh Vegetable and Salad Diet. A Good Rodent Block or Flyer Block, Is essential for a Healthy Flying Squirrel. We also recommend Adding some FoxVally Formula Powder to Vanilla Yogurt daily. You can feed in a Bottle cap, on a dish, from your finger, or a syringe. This will help when your Flyer starts getting Picky and not eating every thing they need to. :D It also keeps the bonding going. If your Flyer were to get Lost some where in the house. If you feed this at a certain time, The Flyer will always be looking forward to this. I hope this will help you out a little.

PS
I am PMing my Phone number. Call me anytime, day or night. I am up nights with my Flyers. :rotfl I have sean Babies Sucked on, or Sucked them self.
If no answer leave a message and I will get back to you. Christal
