My squirrel Alice had avocado and ate the skin... She is lethargic and has rapid breathing.... I tried fluids but she is not swallowing them... Can someone help please? I am holding her now and she seems in distress... Her tail is frizzed as well... Bev

Can you get to a vet? Madison WI are the best vets in the midwest?

I've been researching and can only find instructions for dogs who have ingested avocado peel: use syrup of ipicac to induce vomiting and then push fluids for at least 24 hours to flush the system.

A rehabber should be here shortly....

How is she doing? The same?

She is still breathing rapidly and she is on her back... Her eyes seem to be watery. I cannot get her to drink from a syringe....

She had a grape yesterday and was acting quite similar... I took her to the vet and her lungs were clear and she snapped back... Today she is almost the same but it seems different...

If you are going to take her to a vet in Madison - take her to the ECA (Exceptional Care for Animals) Clinic on the beltline. All four vets there are wildlife certified. Beverly, I have a fair amount of experience rehabbing squirrels in the Madison area. I know the vets pretty well. I will send you a PM with my number if you want to give me a call

I guess I didn't read through the thread carefully or look at your profile. You apparently have quite a bit of experience with the local vets as well, but if you just want someone to talk through the various options please give me a call - I PM'd you my number.

Good news! I have been giving her fluids and I just got her to eat a chip! It looks like she is coming round!! I have her in her cage right now and she is trying other food as well... Thanks to all of you for helping :)
Thanks again Pam!!

That is odd that the same thing happened with a different food could it be an allergic reaction some of the symptoms seem the same

You mentioned she had a grape yesterday and had the same reaction... was the grape peeled or did it have the skin on when she ate it?

If it was NOT peeled, it's possible that the skin got stck in her throat. Maybe it got partly dislodged yesterday but today with the avocado skin it might have got stuck again.

Aslo, isn't avocado skin toxic to sqs? Maybe she had the reaction to it and you managed to flush it out.... i reall dunno :dono Just trying to figure it out for future reference.

I skin or peel EVERYTHING only because everything is from out of the USA at least here in Florida, I cant even get a Florida orange, they are all from South Africa and taste like s%$#, and you dont know what pesticied or fertlizers they use , regulations arent the same in South America or South Africa or were ever the hell they get everything from so much for the fair trade act.
Dont trust any skin or seeds in fruits.
but thats just me.
Wish I had some good old American home grown.

AKK!! this post made my heart stop!! Brought me back to when Butchie was sick last week :(. SOOOOO very relieved to read on and she is fine, poor sweetie.

So what is the official work on avocado peel? Pits too, right? One of my biggest fears right now. Even though I compost everything I am afraid to put peels and pits out because I am afraid the wilds will find them :shakehead.

Yes, peel and pits can be very toxic to rodents if they eat it.

I never put avocado peels in the compost because A. they don't compost well B. anything that gets into the composted dirt could eat the poorly composted peels and get sick C.if avocados are toxic i don't want it to grow things in toxic dirt. I'm glad your baby is doin better.
