I got a close look at my poor little Poxie outside today and I fear it is Pox and not mange. The bare spots are like big, round, bubble-like... like fibromas. She's in mighty poor shape - she can barely see out of one of her eyes by now.

Yesterday she did take the Ivermectin on a nut - it's apple flavored so she didn't protest. :) Today she gladly took 2 boo-balls and one HHB and a bit of avocado, so I know that if the med is liquid I can put it inside a boo-ball and she will take it.

The question is, is there any harm in giving her Acyclovir now that she had Ivermectin? Is the Acyclovir liquid or what (powder, capsule)? Can you remind me of the other name it comes under?

Also I'm not sure I can see her twice a day... the last 2 or 3 days she has come around at lunch time only - she never did come in the morning but she used to come at lunch time and then again at the end of the afternoon. Poor thing, I can tell she's growing weaker and it scares me to see her this way.

Can someone help me with these question today? - I mean, so as to try and get hold of the meds tomorrow while the vet works (otherwise no other vet will prescribe it and I may have to wait until the vet returns).

Here are some pics of her (WARNING - NOT FOR THE WEAK STOMACHS) Rehabbers, your opinion will be greatly appreciated. Sorry if the pics are a bit fuzzy but I was shaking/freezing.

Definitely pox. Jackie is the expert here. PM her and see what she suggests, she can also help you with the dosing.
Here is an interesting case study. Your little guy needs help fast, thank you for being there for him....:Love_Icon

The awful thing is, she's been battling this for 3 weeks now but it seems to have exploded in the last 3 days. It was nowhere close to this bad even only 4 days ago. As I said, initially it looked like it might even be mange. :( Poor baby is fighting for her life out there and I'm scared sick that she might contaminate the rest of my crew. Already Casper - my little white one - has vanished and the last time I did see him he seemed to have a bulge (now I suspect it was a pox) over one of his eyes. That was more than 10 days ago I last saw him :(

I also have a little red out there and it seems that pox is always fatal for reds, now I'm freaking out with worry about him too!!!

I finally got hold of medication for Poxie. I have 5 capsules of Acyclovir 200 mg and 5 capsules of Ciproflox 250 mg. Can someone give me the dosage for my poor Poxie? Also, how many times a day and for how long?

To my best estimate, based on looking at her and Hami's weight to compare them, I'd say she's between 500 and 550g.

Jackie does have the most experience with this -- I'm sending you a PM with the dosage I was given, in the meantime.

I will PM you the instructions if needed, I did send dose info.

From what I have seen MYSELF, and in some cases almost immediately, is the pox lesions stop appearing after a few doses of acyclovir.
If you read how the med works, it's amazing..stops replication.
Amen to meds!
Here in Florida we have smaller sqs so I have been told...
I will send dosing for a 1 lb sq, you'll have to fudge and guess with weights..
A little too high or low won't affect an adult I don't think..
{30 grams either way is ok I would guess}
better than NOT!:thumbsup

Meds mixed in avacodo or peanutbutter stuffed in an empty peanut shell is easy to pitch...we all have peanut pitching practice under our belts!:D

Thought I'd update you again about Poxie's battle against that awful pox.

She came over yesterday, as I posted in another thread, and today she returned. However, she seems weaker, came right up to me again, poor thing, and took the boo-ball from my hand. She emerged from under my wood gazebo and it makes me wonder if she spent the night there. I wonder if she ever goes to her nest now - or if she even has one. Once she had eaten she promptly returned un der the gazebo and it's now 3:30pm and I didn't see her come out of there yet. :(

I could only give her one dose of the meds yesterday - only saw her once - and it seems today will be the same thing. However, today she did eat a fair amount. She had the med-laced booball, a big HHB, a small piece of avocado, some walnuts, pecans and peanuts and I placed a chestnut under the gazebo in case she'd want to snack later on. I also put some polyester fiberfill just inside the entrance hole to the underside of the gazebo - in case she spends the night there, figured she could use it at least as nesting material.

I'm so worried about her. I cannot believe how sweet the poor little thing is :Love_Icon

I'm so glad your baby is doing better Jackie. Love hearing good news.

My biggest worry with Poxie is that she's not getting her meds twice a day as she should but I'm really afraid that giving her a higher dosage once a day is going to be too taxing for her little body and stomach. I think I just have to keep my fingers crossed that whatever she is getting does help.

I was relieved to see how much she did eat today at least.
