Mavrycs nails were getting INSANE it was getting to the point where we were letting him out less and less often because we could feel his nails through our jeans :osnap
SO we called Mari (my sister in law) and had her drive over an hour and a half just to clip his nails... she has ferrets and i felt better having some one with experience do the clipping and all went well and without a hitch :D
but my question is... now that hes clipped his climbing skills are a bit lacking :poke im assuming that in a few days things should be back to normal?! but i wanted to make sure that this was normal and we didnt cut to far or anything!!!

no, not every week, just when they need it...but I wait a week between clipping opposites to allow compensation..
I have a hard time making sense when typing...:shakehead

ha yeah! that sounded a bit obsessive :poke lol im hoping to do it as little as possible as he didnt like it very much... at first he was so scared but he sucked it up and put on his big boy pants after he saw his treats :rotfl i gave him a nut after we were done with his front feetsies and another after the back then he was pretty much a happy camper UNTIL he took his first leap and fell flat on his butt :shakehead i felt SO bad i hadnt even considered that maybe his climbing/jumping would be impaired (im a bad mommy :poke) then he was like "AHHHHH whats going on?!" poor baby so thanks for the tip i will def be adopting your method next time around!!
i wish it didnt need to be done at all but he NEEDED it his out of cage time was suffering (i feel bad for that as well but my face couldnt handle anymore accidents :osnap ) but to his joy and mommy and daddys we played for HOURS yesterday without a single scratch or boo boo :jump

really!!! it was great! just like when he was little before the claws REALLY came in! :rotfl it was SO simple too (hes not a biter so things went well, but if your guy is good luck :osnap Mav just griped a bit) we just used baby finger nail clippers!
you def need two people one to clip and one to hold lol the next time I will probably have mari do it again (she did a great job) since she'll be down for christmas anyway but after that we (me and the love) will probably give it a go (that’s a maybe though I'm not sure I trust him that much lol)

I bought these cage Liner things that are like sand paper...but are fine enough that it doesnt bother their lil paws....they work very well for my flyers....I don't know of it will work with all squirrels but worth a try...cost like $6 for 10 sheets...used 3 or 4 in each cage....might help between the clippings....from walmart......

okay so the nail clipping couldn't wait till x-mas and he was being so super sweet today i decided to do the clipping through the cage bars (since daddy was at work and i had no one to hold him except my 5 year old niece and i doubt that would have went over well :poke lol) and it went great :thumbsup i didnt expect him to be such a big boy about it... he seriously just sat there with his paw and my finger and let me clip them he didnt even flinch :D so since he was being so great i did do both front paws (never know when ill have a chance like that again) and next week ill do the back!!!

I had to have Sassy's nails trimmed also - My vet would do it for me - I only had to have it done 3 times - right after getting them trimmed she would have a little trouble climbing - but she adjusted very quickly - She is released now - FREE - so more nail trimming

I just got done doing Cami's. The way she fusses at me you would think I was torturing her.:poke My nieces are over here and I got yelled at for "hurding Cami". But she liked the almond sliver she got as a prize after!:flash3

I'm thinking about clipping Locket's nails...they are so sharp! My friend with a squirrel said I couln't because the blood vessel is too close and they would bleed. Wouldn't it be the same as trimming a kittens nails? Just take the tip off? Won't she bite me?!

i just clip the clear tips and weve never experienced in biting or bleeding!!! lol but i cant say weather or not locket would bite you lol depends on her!!! lol Mavrycs not a biter... hes a sweetie boy :)
i just use baby finger nail clippers and its quick and painless!

Uggg, I have to clip Bushy's nails little Freda Krueger is getting too long. What is better baby nail clippers, bird nail clippers? I have a clipper that is for my cat, has the plastic handle and guard on it. Dreading this.:shakehead :shakehead :shakehead

I found that the cat nail clippers were too thick for the tiny squirrel nail tips. I got some small bird nail scissors(clippers) and they work perfectly.

I use cuticle clippers...they are sharper,so quick and easy, easier to see what you are doing also.

Jake, just remember what Jackie said once:
don't clip all nails at ones.
Jackie clips: left arm, right leg - first time;
next time: right arm, left leg.
So, that she always has some nails left

Thanks for the advice! Going to pick up a clippers later today, some rescue remedy for her and sedatives for me. So nervous. Done this many times on my ferrets but ferrets kida just lay there and stare at you like...."Um let me know when your done there." I only got one toenail clipped yesterday. :shakehead
