My baby has an injured foot.

So today as I was getting ready (in my bathroom) to leave my house, I heard my squirrel begin squealing with pain. Immediately I rush into my bedroom, as I have let my rats into the room.

Now, keep in mind, the squirrel is in his cage, and the rats should not have been near it at all.

I approach the cage to see my baby in the top corner crying, and one of my rats sitting at the bottom of the cage looking completely innocent, but I know that is not the case at all. The rat bit the bottom of his left back foot (through the bars of the cage), and the pad was punctured, as there was a bit of blood. The baby wouldn't calm down for a bit, but I was able to dab at the bite mark with a wet cloth.

As of now, he fine. He doesn't like to put much pressure on it, which is to be expected, however I noticed that his toes are not spread out at a normal span like on his other foot. Other than that, he seems to be just fine now.

Is there anything (and I know there is) that I should do to help prevent infection/anything negative from happening to my baby or his foot?

You can put neosporin or any topical antibiotic ointment that doesn't have zinc in it. A toe may of been broken and as with us not much can be done other than giving metacam and/or pain relievers. Watch closely for infection.

For the most part rats and squirrels don't usually mix well.

I would seriously consider a short course of antibiotics. Rats don't have nasty bites but ANY bite wound can cause an infection because they are puncture wounds.

Poor baby! I sent you a private message earlier. I live in South Carolina as well. If we're close enough, I would be happy to help in any way that I can. :) You don't have to give exact location for safety reasons...but can you give us an idea of where you're at? Several of us have met and helped each other out when necessary. You just never know what may happen with these little monsters~

Well, last night I was looking at the foot, and it doesn't really even look like it was punctured at all. :dono It had to have been obviously, for there to have been blood, but overall it looks really good to me.

As far as where I am, I'm in the Greenville/Upstate area. :3

That's great about the foot! Just keep an eye on it. LOL! That squirrel alarm we've got going on is pretty odd, to say the least! I sure am glad it works though!!!!

I think I'm 3.5-4 hrs away from somnit. :( You know how it goes though...we've made a few roadtrips when we had to!!! All about the squirrels.... Don't ya just love 'em!?!?!?!
