Hello folks!~
Recently I was asked to help with 5 you squirrels ranging in age from 7 to 16 weeks of age. Knowing full well I would not be able to, I was finally coerced into fostering the two younger females. I have two 8 week old Fox Squirrels that had started life very rough, bottle fed and weened too soon. The one we call Louise always had energy but the one we call Thelma was very shy, if not lethargic. I am happy to report that after one week, BOTH are full of squirrellness IN ABUNDANCE! They have a regular diet now of broccoli, kayle, orange, apple, some monkey chow, pine bark and just about whatever else we can find. They each get a shelled walnut piece if they eat all their other noms.
Anyway, they came to me because they have already bonded to people and those people no longer had the time or availability to take care of them. So here I am, a squirrel foster parent for the 2nd time and relearning everything I thought I knew. I will be keeping them till spring when I plan to make a large outside pre-release enclosure and begin to wild them up for release.
BTW, they are SO cool!!

WELCOME~~~~!!!!!!

foxers are so cute!:)
Yes, overwintering and releasing can be quite a challenge, but since this is not your first time, you will do fine, "relearning" ;-).
Sounds like they eat the right veggies:thumbsup , but I would like to make an observation: they need rodent blocks as part of their regular diet.
One of the biggest challenges with overwintered babies is their diet so as to avoid MBD. And daily squirrel block is a must for that.
You probably already know about Henry's Healthy Block from www.henryspets.com - 2 per day per person should be enough.
If you decide to use other rodent blocks - harland teklad, kaytee fortee for rat and mice (blue bag), mazuri -these have to be 80% of their total diet.
Please feel free to check out Squirrel Nutrition forum - lots of useful info.
And ask away whatever questions you might have!;-)
Sorry, if I am repeating the "old" info (I always get very concerned over the correct diet ;-)).
But this photo is not enough.:poke
They need their own thread and tons and tons of photos:crazy . :D

Your girl is just adorable!! So cute. Can't wait to hear more about them.

She looks pretty small from that picture and should still be on formula. Are they? They actually nurse on their mom until they are 10-12 weeks old. Everyone here tries to keep them drinking formula as long as they'll take it. It contains all the nutrition they need including Calcium they so desperately need. :) Let us know if you need info on the right formula for them.

More pix please. :D

CORRECTION!! They have rodent blocks now, not monkey chow (yet)
They SHOULD still be on formula IMO but were weened early by the folks I got them from and as such, they no longer want anything to do with formula (Presbelac anyway) So we have them on somewhat of a weening diet and they are gaining weight. I will weigh them again this weekend and start reporting on their progress.
I'll also post video as soon as I can.

Accckkkk, TOO cute! I forget how differently adorable baby foxers look. Check out http://coastandcanyonwildlife.org/ if you have any questions about rehabbing baby foxers or releasing. I mean, you can get pretty much any question answered here at TSB but C&C does tons of baby foxers and they have great info and photos. :flash

Thank you all for the kind words!
They're doing great. I HATED that Palm stump they had so I built them a nice redwood nesting box today.

Cedar shavings are not OK.
A cedar box will most likely be OK.
Cedar has, as you know, aromatics that aren't the best.
Plain old pine is preferred.

:Welcome
What a beautiful box! I like how its nestled in the corner. I have my lumber in the barn and will build - I'm inspired! Love the girls - foxers are my favorite - luckily I get quite a few - they are so sweet!!!

I love the nest box. I love the photo of the baby that fell asleep right at the opening. So cute when they do that.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Because the box was made mostly of Cedar, I have decided to remove it and make a new one this weekend.
New and improved.
(Better safe than sorry)
