I have this young black squee among my wilds out there and she (I think it's a female) sports some very suspicious blotches. I cannot get close enough to catch a very good pic but these are the ones I did manage to catch. It's November and quite cold out here - at nights anyway - but can this be pox? If so, I thought pox was more prevalent in the warmer climates. Somehow this doesn't look like mange to me since the spots are small and I don't see scaling. Other than that, she's acting normal, running and eating normally. Not acting ill but I am worried. I have between 8 and a dozen regulars in my backyard by now and I worry that this may be contagious.

I must say that capturing this little one is out of the question... definitely too wild and too many others around... and I have no room to put an extra cage lest it threatens to contaminate my overwinter ones. Can't leave it outside in a cage or box - racoons and coyotes around here.

Any suggestions?

You know what Mitch it looks to me like wounds and the stress from it might be bringing on mange. Poor ruff looking kid.:grouphug

Look at those beautiful back legs.

I'm going to keep an eye out but I think it has been getting worse - which is why I suspect it may not be wounds but then again, I might be wrong. He's a sweet kid but very wary and trying to catch him would be very tricky.

If only I could get my hands on some antibiotics I could try to slip him some on avocado pieces. Of course I'd have to find out first if he likes avocado - I don't know any who do NOT like it, mind ya - but I might be able to attract the others to eat on one side of the gazebo and make him stay on the other.

Is there something oral I could give him if it's mange? Of course weighing him is out of the question too but I could probably guestimate by comparing him to my juvies here.

We had a mange wild squirrel in our yard. We managed to get some Ivermectin and put a drop or two on an apple slice 1/8 size and he gobbled it right up. Two days later did the same thing. He eventually was cured after the two treatments. Just be sure to not give to much antibiotic. Good luck.
