Hi,

I just found this wonderful board. I am a squirrel lover for sure.

I help out an animal hospital when someone finds abandoned or injured baby squirrels. I have been raising a little female for the past 10 weeks. She is now about 12 weeks and I will need some help with the slow release. She is eating rodent block, veg/fruit, nuts/acorns/seeds. We have spoiled her rotten. Yesterday she built a cozy nest out of cage bedding/papers in her fleece hammock. Of course, I can keep her as long as needed. Thanks for any help.

Hi Mom4ever,

Are you looking for information on how to do a slow release or are you looking for someone that can release her for you?

Michele-

I used to live on acreage and that was my perfect setup. However, now I live in a subdivision which is not the right place.

I need to find someone that can release her slowly & properly where she will be safe.

Hi CJ,

Here is a link to my thread on my release cage setup. We are on 2.5 acres, rural / industrial area. Behind our property are hundreds if not a thousand acres of woods. If you would like me to release, I would be happy to.

I have 14 out there now to be released by Thanksgiving. After that, I am overwintering everybody til spring. The options would be for you to keep her til spring and then bring her out to me for release (I put them out in release cage for 30 days) or, you could bring her out here for me to overwinter her with ten that I have that I am overwintering for a spring release. I plan on overwintering my guys in the outdoor release cage. They will have more room and be happier than indoors in smaller cages. If we have extremely cold temps, we are prepared to hang tarps or wood to block cold wind.

Personally, I do feel that it is better to bring her out to be overwintered here so that she can be put with a "sibling" group and bond with them. That way when she is released she will already have "buddies" that she may hang with until she is ready to go on her own and start her own family. We have half a dozen nestboxes around the release area and are planning on putting up another half a dozen for these November releases and will add more with the spring releases.

If you have any questions, please ask!
