This is the thread I started awhile back. I'm re-posting because I was wondering if anyone would take on this squirrel before she is released... I feel as if my friend is not listening to my advice. She is not feeding her a healthy diet, not giving the squirrel enough cage free time, and is just not being a good mommy in general! I can't take her on or I would. And just so you guys know, this will probably not be an easy task... The squirrel is not 'friendly.' I told her that when she decided to keep this squirrel (3 years ago) she needed to be very dedicated to her for her entire life or release her. Let's just say she did not listen. I am worried about how she will release her also. It frustrates me how uncooperative she is. Please help this poor squirrel :( Her name is biscuit.

Are you looking for someone to adopt her as a pet or to properly release her?

Properly release her :). Although she has a gigantic cage, she needs to be in the wild. Other than being fed a poor diet, she has no problems.
if she's been fed a poor diet then her mineral levels/calcium etc...have to be optimal before she can be released otherwise one fall and she'll break something....
just to err on the side of caution....
still trying for you .... :grouphug

If she is releasable I would be willing to help.
I agree with gs1 that she needs to be evaluated to make sure she
is healthy first, and then properly conditioned for release.
I'd like to know a little more about her first, what she is accustomed to now
(size of cage, diet, behavior, etc) just to make sure I can offer her the right setting.

She has a gigantic [indoor] cage. She has one of those ferret nation cages. This is what it looks like: http://common.csnstores.com/Midwest-Homes-For-Pets-Ferret-Nation-Double-Unit-Ferret-Cage-with-Stand~img~MDW~MDW1095_a.jpg
From what Siera has told me.. she eats an assortment of veggies, she eats some sort of hamster food (I've heard this isn't the best...), and what I don't like.. she eats random people food (potato chips- things like that). I tried to get her to buy some rodent blocks but she didn't listen.
As far as behavior.. she is not the nicest. Siera is the only one who has ever been able to handle her and she has been bitten numerous times.

That's why I am trying to find someone now. I know she won't be able to be released for awhile but I figured if someone could take her now they could get her on a good diet and maybe by the time Spring comes, she would be ready. The last time I saw her she looked fine, but I know sometimes things aren't always visible. This is also why I wanted to release someone for her. I'm afraid she'll just 'let her go' without making sure she's healthy AND ready.

Oh and I am willing to meet someone half way! I have a carrying cage I can bring her in. I am available just about every weekend
:grouphug sigh!!!!
that's a horrible cage for a squirrel... :grouphug sigh ... i know you mean well... but a 3 year old squirrel should have a whole room to herself....
no wonder she's biting:grouphug
edit: to modify my comments...imagine the space an out door wild squirrel has...then a room or a house is as much as we can give... but that size cage... it's barely big enough for a mouse....(considering how much space wild mice have :) ...)
the squirrel can't be released into the wild right now ...it's signing her death certificate....
i can't express how grateful i am to you for helping her....

Well if she can be put on a proper diet and slowly conditioned to be outdoors and integrated
with other squirrels with limited human contact, she can be a good candidate for release.
If her owner agrees to this, I think we could probably work it out.
If she wants her to go to someone as a pet I would not be able to help.
As it is I have 4 NR's of my own plus a 5th that I am trying to find a home for,
so I am at my limit space-wise.
Why don't you confirm what she wants to do and then maybe we can discuss details.

I agree completely. My squirrels have my entire apartment to roam and seem to be happy with that. The only reason they have a cage is for them to eat and sleep in. (Mochi is a toe biter :p ) would this be a good sleeping cage though? Because I was going to get the same one for my squirrels (of course they would be out 90% of the time though). If it isn't, could you direct me to a better cage? And I would do anything to help a poor animal :/ It's so sad to see them suffer...

I got a Critter Nation (double) for one of my squirrels.
Same cage, but safer for squirrels than the Ferret Nation (vertical and smaller bar spacing).
One really great thing about this cage is you can take it apart and reassemble easily (no screws either!)
It is also really sturdy...my favorite cage!
I had to move my squirrels twice recently and can tell you it's easy and quick to do this.
I would love to replace all my squirrel cages with Critter Nations when I win the lottery!
I never lock the cage though, cause they are allowed to roam freely in the squirrel room.
I keep her nest box and food dish in there, and she loves to hide her treats in the lower floors.
On the rare occassions when I've had to lock her in, it's a big enough cage
to be confined to.

I know my friend wanted to release her this Winter (luckily she listened to me on this one with waiting until Spring) so I'm sure she would be happy to hand her over to you to and prepare her for release. I just texted her though just to make sure she understands exactly what's going on so I will let you know what she says as soon as I get a reply. And just so you know, I am still thinking of taking on your 5th NR. I should know soon.

I bought the single unit on Craigslist for a very low price and then bought the add-on to make it a double, which made it more affordable.

Gosh I would love to transition over to the Critter Nation cages. Heard nothing but good things about them.

-That's what I was thinking. My family is usually pretty good about getting me things like that.
-And I will make sure to keep an eye out an Craigslist!

She won't tell me yes or no. I guess she's not happy with me from the last conversation we had. She was talking about getting rid of all her pets so she could get a new one :shakehead. I voiced my opinion and she wasn't happy when I didn't support her. She did say she would like to contact you though. I guess I've done all I can for now. Is there anyway you could send me your contact information through a pm so I can pass it on to her? Hopefully she's still serious and is only acting this way because she's mad at me.

Sure, I'll PM you my email and phone.
Maybe give her time to think it over.
It's not like I have a pressing NEED for another squirrel :D
but I'd be happy to help and ensure she has a safe place to go!
