One of our members dizzdigia has a squirrel named Grrr who needs to have surgery to have an arm amputated. He has been fighting an infection for quite some time. Below are links to his two threads. He also has teeth issues, but for now, we are working on the amputation.
At first the vet thought the arm could be saved even though it is no longer functional. From what I understand, the bones in the hand have fused together so that it is now more of a club. However, after his last visit, the vet is now recommending amputation.
dizzdigia has already spent $287 on his arm (the initial antibiotics she received before she saw the vet, the vet bills and a supply of ointments, gauze, wraps and betadine. I believe she was treating the wound with silvadene and keeping the wound wrapped in between vet visits. This amount would have been much higher but the vet did not charge for several things including the xrays.
This amount will continue to go up due to all the repeat vet checks he will continue to have twice a week until his surgery.
I have a copy of the vet's estimate for the amputation and this is what Dizzdigia needs help with. The estimate is for $293.19. Grrr goes back to the vet for a re-check on Monday. I just can't help but think that if the arm has to be amputated, sooner would be better than later.
I know we just got through with Marven's fundraising and his last raffle; and Tina's surgery prior to that. I hate to ask, but if anyone could help out it would be so much appreciated. Any amount would help. I'll start it off with a $20 donation. If anyone would like to contribute, you can paypal to mpetys@gmail.com. If you would like to mail a check, please PM me for the mailing address. Thank you!
I am also working on a possible raffle for Grrr. If anyone has any ideas or any prizes they could contribute please PM me. Please keep dizzdigia and Grrr in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you!

I posted an update on Grrr in his other thread but I thought it would be good to put it over here too so people dont have to look back and forth to read about him.
Hi everyone,
Im sorry I havent updated more often. Grrr has had Vet appointments every 4-5 days to recheck his arm and to rewrap it. There wasnt much to post, it was more a wait and see game. This week was not a great week though. :(
Monday he took off his wrap and thought all looked well enough to not rewrap. He sent me home thinking we were in the clear, told me to keep an eye on him and to call if I saw any problems.
As soon as I got him home and took him out of his carrier I knew something was wrong-that skinny bony hand the vet showed me had turned immediately into a swollen bright pink club! In that short of time! For the rest of the day and until his new appointment he refused to eat or even come out of his nest. He was in alot of pain
When I got him back in he wasnt the sweet boy the vet and techs all loved, nor would he even let him pick Grrr up! He was in defensive mode growling and swiping at him (never had he done this, he lets everybody pick him up there with no gloves) apparently once the swelling went away he had no more protection for his little wrist bone and as soon as he stepped without the bandage the wristbone poked through his skin. That is what happened in his carrier after mondays appointment. How sad!! So the vet cut out that wrist bone and made him a steel rod splint for him to immobilize his arm and provide relief. He said he missed that bone on the initial Xray as it was so hard to see through the swelling. Even if he had seen it the outcome would still be the same, it would have just saved me alot of vet visits...and money because after all hes been through the vet told me my two options are amputation or put him down. Euthanasia is NOT an option for us! My three children love him dearly, not to mention my husband and I who have been nursing him and given our hearts to him. We want to see him through this, and we understand this will make him a NR and we are happy to provide him a safe loving forever home for him! As soon as I got him back home with his makeshift cast he is back to his spunky self...eating, snuggling with us, digging in his dirt box (my daughter digs up his nuts and he takes them and buries them again) eating my couch and TV, killing my plants, peeing on my table, etc. I LOVE to see him happy again! :thumbsup
He will continue to have vet appointments twice a week for recheck on it and bandage changes on his splint until he can get his surgery. Once his splint comes off his arm is limp and in hes in a tremendous amount of pain. Its so sad. :(
Also id like to add on a positive note that his teeth issues have been corrected at home! I turned my lanai into an indoor jungle for him with LOTS to chew and destroy and he is doing soooo much better! YAY!

Oh--So sorry. I remember Grrr. I didn't realize things were still bad. I had a cat once that had a horrible broken leg at the knee and out of the socket at the hip. The vet recommended amputation. Told me tripod animals do fine. I opted for addition surgery (I had thousands of dollars in that leg) and eventually she healed and had a peg leg for the rest of her life (died last year at 17). Infections are different though--can go global in a hurry.
I'll make a donation----so very sorry!

Im sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty. :( At 17 years she definitely lived a very long happy life filled with lots of love and comfort!
We have a stray that showed up on our doorstep when she was maybe 6 weeks old with a severely infected tail 9 days after her mother hitched a ride in the engine of my hubbys truck to Walmart. :( He felt so guilty and responsibe for her that we paid over $2000 for anitbiotics and tail amputation. She now lives out back in her cat house he built for her. :D
Thank you so much for helping our family continue to help Grrr! :Love_Icon

Grrr had another Vet appointment yesterday, now that doc cut out his wrist bone his bones are separating.:( His first makeshift cast had the steel rod going just a bit past his wrist now the new one he made goes all the way up to his armpit to completely immobilize his entire arm. He was mad at me all day after getting him home, his arm is so heavy now its quite an effort for him to get around with it. Hes doing alot of walking around on the floor instead of jumping from place to place. Hopefully today he will have gotten more used to the new weight and he will be more mobile!:Love_Icon

Good morning! I spoke to Island Rehabber (Admin) and TSB would like to donate $40 from the TSB Fund toward this surgery. :thankyou Thank-you to everyone who has helped to build the fund so that TSB is able to help!
Once the fundraisers here are done we will have to see about a raffle or some other fundraiser to help build it up further so we are able to help future needy squirrels!
I will Pay Pal it over in a few minutes.
Thank you SammysMom and TSB. Got it.
SammysMom, I want to thank you for your efforts to replenish the TSB fund with your tshirt sales. Let me know when you do a raffle and I will donate a prize!

Works for me...if it ain't broke, why fix it? :poke
Raised over $450 for Marven with that system, right?:dono
$461 to be exact. Which brings me to something. There is a good chance that we will raise more than will be needed by Grrr. I'd like to address that now. I will take anything that was made as a donation and apply that to Grrr's needed amount first. Then I will add to that from the raffle proceeds. If the raffle proceeds exceed what is needed by Grrr, then I woud like to hold on to the remaining funds for the next fundraiser that I hold. We may not always be able to get a nestbox donated so there may be times that it would be nice to buy one for a raffle. Kind of like seed money. And you know we woud absolutey have to buy one from Jake (with our TSB discount, of course). And there may be time when a member can donate an item but cannot pay for the shipping. This way we can have that covered.
I will talk to each person who has donated an item for this raffle to make sure they are okay with this. And I have one more thing to ask. Would you guys mind if I referred to these fundraisers / raffles I do as "Tina's Legacy"? It would mean a lot to me. I started wanting to help out because of all the wonderful support we received from TSB members. Now that Tina is gone, each one is like a connection to her and a tribute to her short, beautiful life.

:bowdown You are very welcome! You can add a t-shirt of your choice to that list too.
Update on prizes to select from:
Mug, cermaic travel or regular, ornament, license plate, Itouch 2 or Itouch 4 case, tote bag, t-shirt, nest box.
Hi Jake! I just need a clarification to make sure I am understanding this. Your prize is one of the items from your CafePress store, right? The nest box is that included in the choices or is that the one that JLM is donating back. From what you have listed in your post, is that one prize or two?

The estimate from the vet is $300. I believe we have about $100 of that already. I am pretty confident we will be successful as it looks like we have a great raffle taking shape. Thank you for the nestbox!

My rottweiler could take lessons from Grrr! He has this habit of chewing on his feet. He has chewed the pads off. So I have to treat with silvadene and then keep it bandaged. Yeah right! He rips them off. So now what we have done is after we get it doctored up and all wrapped with that adhesive wrap bandage, we put one of my husbands socks on over all that. To keep the sock on, we cut slits in the sides and I made a crude fleece sling that is attached to both sides of the sock and one side runs over the top of his back while the other side runs under his ribcage. After adjusting it for comfort, we then take duct tape and tape around the top of the sock and around the foot of the sock to help keep the sock from stretching and flopping off. Looks silly but it worked. I was able to keep the bandages on in between re-wraps and the foot has healed! Until the next time he decides to chew!

We just got home from Grrr's appointment. All the tissue on his arm is dying and if that wasnt bad enough its spreading. Dr. Duke wants to amputate as soon as possible, and prefers it be done within the next few days.
I left his office in tears. I feel so bad for him and I guess I was hoping too much for some sort of miracle that would save his leg during all these check ups, bandage changes, and after he already cut his wrist bone out. What really started the water works was asking me again about euthanasia. It is absolutely out of the question! Do they not understand how much he is loved? How hard he has fought for his life? How hard myself and my family has fought for him? We all love him to pieces...kids included. We have nursed him since he was 4 weeks old and we are honored he has chosen us to be his family. He shows us everyday how much he loves us and how happy he is with us and his life that the mere thought of putting him to sleep just breaks my heart. :(

is it possible for you to have this surgery done?... raffle and donations will eventually compensate the expense. But if it is going to spread, this is rather urgent, because if it does spread, he might have to be put down.
Can you get money from somewhere?... we will get the amount, so you will be able to return it.

Thank you Astra. We need positive thinking like this! Courtney called me and what I have asked her to do it to go ahead and schedule the surgery ASAP. We have received some donations and we are halfway there. I know in my heart this raffle will be a success. I am going to guarantee the bill with the vet or front the funds for the surgery now and settle up after the raffle is done.
Grrr has come so far and been through so much, there is no way we can sit back and make him wait for the surgery and take a chance that things could get worse.
As soon as Courtney has the surgery scheduled, she will post that information here. We will proceed with the raffle (it kicks off tonight) and just keep Courtney and Grrr in our thoughts and prayers.

Meemor holds such a special place in our hearts as we have watched him from when he was rescued as a baby, to his first release, to when he came home injured and then his second release. If you have not read his thread, I urge you to do so. So heartwarming and filled with beautiful photography of not just Meemor, but other animals and the beautiful scenery of the Yukon! Here is the link: http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/s...ghlight=meemor
And after seeing the pencil sketches Astra did of Nancy in New York's squirrel, Jeffrey, who wouldn't be honored to have an Astra original in their home. See post #87 to see the pictures Nancy posted. Absolutely beautiful.
And, of course, we have another chance to get one of Jakes nestboxes for our favorite squirrel! Animal hoods from ChickenMom, Go Hump a Stuffie t-shirt from SammysMom, an item from Jakes CafePress store, a copy of Wheezers newest book, "A Wild Life" or Petit Fours and Rum Cake, just in time for the holidays from dizzdigia!

I know how you feel. I was lost when I found out how much Tina's surgery was going to cost. Scared. I still take great comfort in remembering how it felt to be so supported by others here on TSB, not just with donations and raffles, but the genuine care and concern they had for Tina and for me.
Yes, deep breaths right now. As I mentioned to you earlier, surgery day for Tina was a very hard day for me. So just know that on Wednesday we are here for you and afterwards as well. Check in often as we will be thinking of you both all day.

Im not sure if youre if youre following the raffle thread or not but he did have his surgery yesterday. His irratic breathing was worrysome for a few hours but they let him come home at the end of the day. He was in ALOT of pain all night long, and hes still pretty uncomfortable and depressed today. :(
Thank you for checking in on him:Love_Icon
