We rescued a squirrel and I've been getting him hydrated and well doing all the right things. However, i'm worried about the genital area. It doesn't look well and I have seen him poo but not pee. please tell me what to do. thanks so much! if you need another picture let me know.

That looks extremely aggravated...and if he can't urinate he can develop infection.
Has he been sucking on himself?
It needs immediate attention, there's a few things you could do to help him,
but it may require vet care.
Can you take a close up?
What part of Florida are you?

First, if he is dehydrated it will take a while before he pees. Keep hydrating him. In the meantime, get a cotton ball soaked in warm water and hold it on his penis for a WHILE - keep dipping it in warm water and soaking. I would try to hold it on there for at least ten minutes. You are trying to soften the scab at the end of the penis so he CAN pee. Once it softens, start to gently tease it off with the cotton ball and continue hydrating and stimulating to pee.

Are we sure that is his genitals?

Hey guys - that looks just like my Garnet - when I found him! I have some great articles on this from the NAWR - That is one sucked on sore penis!!!

Crittermom is on target! Then put some ointment - once he has food he won't suck on it. That's what they do when they are starving in the nest - boys survive longer than girls - I always call them my little penis pullers - poor boy!!!

I'm not sure...was waiting for a close up.
It could be his umbilical cord.
Sometimes they can get an infection there.

He is older though, so not sure if he would have an infection there at this age from the umbilical cord....there just seems to be no length to the penis, almost "flat like"...:dono

Ok, that's definitely his penis :D
I follow the same advice as Crittermom.
You may have to repeat the soaking every time though because
the scab may keep forming over.
An ointment will help keep the skin moist and heal faster too.

It's really critical that he gets proper care.
He's likely weak and dehydrated.

I can refer you to an area rehabber - Back to Nature (East SR 50 in Bithlo).

What formula are you using. It should never be mixed with pedialyte, only with hot water...:thumbsup
Do you have him on any heat? Put him on a non auto shut off heating pad on low and put his container half on and half off of the heating pad....with lots of fleece in there, no towels, they can get their nails caught. Remember put heating pad on LOW. If you don't have a heating pad make a rice buddy. One cup uncooked rice in a sock, tie at the top, microwave for 1 minute. Take it out and squish it around so there are no hot spots, wrap in a piece of fleece and put it next to him.

This baby allready has at least one health issue and if you feed him Esbilac there will be more. You need to get Fox Valley 32/40 formula if you intend to raise him yourself. The scab on his penis needs to be soaked til it will come off so he can pee. There are many on this board in your state with experience and the correct formula to help this baby. Please take the offer to find you help for him . Good luck! Stacey

Unfortunately, many sites aren't updated often. This place is so busy that things move faster here, including finding out stuff like the Esbilac issue.

You can make a wonderful temporary formula from goats milk, full fat yogurt, and eventually, heavy whipping cream that will do wonderfully well until you can get some Fox Valley. Please read this - I went into a lot of detail: http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29904

The Fox Valley for squirrels can be purchased at www.foxvalleynutrition.com and www.henryspets.com.
