Our little Bellatrix has been growing and is happy and playful and sweet, but she has a tendency to sometimes use our FACES as a landing pad, or simply as a means to get on top of our head. We don't mind her climbing on our shoulders, neck, head, etc... but when a tiny, razor-clawed squirrel runs over your FACE, it's less than desirable.
How do you teach a small wild thing what is okay to run over and what isn't?
:thankyou

I hadn't seen the *HELMET* until now...HAHAHA!!!!
Hi Kristina! I'm not sure what to tell you, our Spock is about 4 months old now and we have the same problem. Its hard to get mad at him for it, because I think he really identifies faces and he sees us, gets excited and says..."I LOVE YOUR FACE!!!" We are at the point now where we can tell when he's in launch mode and will cover our faces with our hands. We also say OUCH when he gets us, I'm hoping he will learn the face is a sensitive spot, but I'm not getting my hopes up. We have gotten into the habit of wearing zip front hoodies when playing with him, with the drawstring pulled tight around the face, so less space to slide down or climb up...LOL. I suppose its one of the downfalls of having a wild animal in the house.

Thanks for the giggle, I needed it today.
Edit: In srs bzns: You're right, it's wild. Remember that. It's cuddly and cute now, be that to it, too. But also remember that you're the one being trained, not the wild animal. Much love, but not as much as that little wild animal can give you while it gives.

yep, what they all said.
For squirrels our faces and the rest of the body are not always 'connected". They learn to identify your face with the person they love and are attached to, so they jump on you as a sign of love, and, sometimes, for fun.
I've observed wild babies jumping and crawling all over their mother, head, back and all - that's another way of theirs to show their affection, that's their way of "hugging" (because she cannot really hug you, can she?;-)
Sometimes, with time, they jump on your face less frequently, but it will be mostly you who will learn to identity pre-face plant pose (face plant is the official term for this;-)) and you will develop tactics to avoid those face plants.

Now why does that reaction feel so familiar to me? Oh wait... I think I had the same one. :jump :jump
OK, so now seriously though... I'm sorry, kristina.... :( It's just that I think we've all been there and found out how true it is that WE are being trained and not the reverse. I can only say, "Good luck" and maybe learn to walk around with your head bent forward; if he's not on me then I've learned to move around with my back or one shoulder towards Hami - it's now become a reflex which allows me to swiftly jerk one way or another to avoid the face plant thing.
Safety goggles can't hurt in a case like yours ;)
