I already posted this in the nursery section under Shades thread but I think it might get more attention here. Not sure why my baby has this bald spot. Maybe he is loosing his baby fur and getting a winter coat??:thinking :dono
Just want to make sure its not a serious issue. Seems to have gotten balder over the past few days...

also I noticed when I was examining the bald spot this black inside his ears... is this an infection or mites or something? Can I clean his ears? with what?

Not sure why but I haven't gotten any replies on this thread about this bald spot. I got some suggestions in the nursery thread. Someone told me it could be his diet\ someone else said lack of sunlight. He eats FV with some all natural vanilla yogurt 12cc 2xs a day and Kaytees rodent block, lambs quarters, dandelion greens and hes had snap peas, cilantro, cabbage, sweat potato, slice of apple, grape, blueberry, green pepper.... For treats in the evening I will give him two or three acorns, chestnuts, pecans, walnuts, almonds. or small amount of sunflower/sullflower seed or a little granola. I was giving cashews but someone on here told me not because on they are to high in fat. Other than this bald spot he seems very healthy and hyper!!! :crazy :multi
I just ordered him some HHBs I hope this will do the trick:shakehead (if it is his diet). Also as I said in the nursery thread (that is not getting much attention, as I am a worried mother) that this bald spot did not occur until after I noticed he had lice. As instructed I wiped him down with Zodiac............ any suggestions would help. I took these pics a few days ago and now it seems to be getting bigger. :osnap :dono :thinking

Do you have a way to get some Revolution? The stuff in the ears looks a little suspicious. A couple drops of that will take care of any mite issues he may be having.

I have Tresaderm. It was prescribed for my dog when she was having ear issues.
It has to be kept in the fridge. I also have some ear wash for dogs.... never heard of revolution... can I get it at a pet store?

The balding spots down the back looks a lot like mine two guys did when they had a case of MITES..... I suggest a good bath in Dawn dish soap then a dose of REVOLUTION between the shoulder if your little guy is over 8 weeks old..... and the sooner the better or your little guy will loose more hair than is needed before you get him treated.

Revolution is a prescription flea medication for cats and dogs. When using on squirrels, I use one drop on the back between the shoulders and it seems to work really well. I had one baby that had some black stuff in his ears. I couldn't tell if it was mites or dirt so I went ahead and treated with Revolution. If you have friends or family, ask around if any of them have Revolution.

I'm concerned with getting water in his ears... this might be a dumb question because I know it rains outside and the wild squirrels I see are always out in the rain. Could getting water in his ears hurt him? SO you want me to wash him with Dawn dish soap on his body and then what? wipe out the ears with a qtip? then put a drop of revolution on his back between the shoulders. Maybe I'm miss understanding but the mites are in his ears or on his skin causing the bald spot?
Sorry but I'm a little confused... first time squirrel owner.....:thinking

Not sure myself about Frontline but you need something that addresses mites, not all do. Most are for just fleas-ticks. Revolution clearly states for mites also as well as Pet Armor (sold @ Walmart)

Your not going to be "pouring" water into his ears, soft washing/wiping with a q-tip is not going to hurt him. Washing first with dawn is o.k., it repels fleas but won't get rid of mites. Yes, to the revolution (or whatever) between the shoulders. As long as the flea/tick med is and states "for mites" it will address both. Revolution is the choice one to use if you can obtain it.

Ok so last night I gave Shades a bath! He was beyond pi$$ed! Scratching and cussing me!! But now he's clean. I dried his ears out with a towel and put Otoman in the ears , he loved that! Guess it felt good. I massaged the Otoman in with my finger. Then when he was dry I put a drop of revolution between his shoulders . Now let's cross our fingers and pray for hair to grow back!

Mandi, Here's what my vet recommended to clean a squirrels ear. Make a 10% vinegar ( any will do) and 90% water mixture. Dip a qtip in the solution and GENTLY swipe the gooh out. Try not to twist the qtip around....its comparable to a brillo pad to the delicate tissue in their ear.
That ear looks like it becoming impacted with debris...don't be surprised if after you work out the initial stuff in his ears...it comes back. It may even be moist under there....If I were you I would try and get him on a good ear med ASAP.
As far as the balding....do me a favor and watch for more. Even after treated with the revolution...and let me know if he feels warm to you.

My little girl was balding around the arm pits, she had one tiny thin spot on her head. After just one treatment her fur came back in and it didn't take too long of a time either.
I haven't had a problem since but did treat her again several months down the road when I had to treat the dogs for fleas. She didn't have them but I didn't want her to get them either.

Its getting worse everyday. I just treated him last night. Other than the balding he seems like himself, hes been sleeping the same amount as usual.... hes eating his rodent block and snow peas...

Heres a video of him eating his block... seems to be fine.

I have heard this "it looks worse" in a few cases, give it some time to work. He does look like a classic example of mange caused by mange mites. Down the road he may need a second treatment. Have you also cleaned his bedding (with Dawn so as not to irratate) and I would also wash down his housing and nest box if using one. Mites are hard if not impossible to see even with an eye glass.

Looks likes bites (sores) from where the Mites have been biting..... you can place some Neosporin on it if you like...... and dont forget the Revolution treatment.
Mange from Mites will get worse a lot of the time before it gets better.... it did with my babies (took 3 mths to heal).

I treated him that same evening for the mites with revolution.. how often do i apply it once a month , one drop ... right? and ok I will put neosporin on the bites. thanks!

Im noticing Shades drinking more and more water... I just got my HHBs yesterday he loves them! But could that cause him to drink more? I did the pinch test on the back of his head around his shoulders and the skin slowly goes back down.. I read in here somewhere that the skin should snap back in place. Could he be dehydrated? I could give him some pedialyte tomorrow. But do I only give him that?
CritterMom
10-22-2011, 06:24 AM
No, let him have all of his regular food, just give him a few syringes full of pedialyte or homemade rehydration fluid off and on through the day. If he will drink it from a bowl, you can give it to him that way, too.
The revolution is pretty effective stuff, and pretty safe, too. I think I might put more than one drop on him, though - 2 or 3 with follow up in 30 days.

I can't answer this but I know cedar (wood) should not be used around squirrels. If it is poisonous you need to post your question in life threatening for better/quicker response. Please do it now...

No, I know others who use cedar wood to build nest boxes . He should be fine. I think there is more concern with the shavings being used for bedding. How is he doing?? Any changes in mood/ behavior. If he throws up, let us know right away, but I think he should be fine.

Well he was just fine , a little sneezing and some rubbing of the nose but thats it. He's getting balder! Right now he is playing in the bamboo blinds! He loves those cuz he can get a good grip. Ok he's not playing on the blinds anymore he's ratting up my hair now! And earlier he was burying peas in my peatmoss plants! So i was sweeping up his mess again and again. I'll post a pic of the bald spot still seems to be getting worse.

I am really getting concerned with this balding. When Shades curls up in my shirt I can see all the little hairs that have fallen out. Could this be from the oils in our hands? He'sbalding all the way to the base of the tail! I don't know what eleae to do for him. I feel really bad! I was thinling maybe i should wash him more. But that stresses him out really bad and he screams! Plus I'm afraid of drying out his skin. Someone mentioned this could be from rubbing.... ?? What's that mean?

Rubbing like scrapeing on something, happens sometimes with nest boxs when the holes aren't big enough. I had to enlarge mine as my little one grew. Is there something he goes in and out of or under that he could be rubbing his back on??

Mandibair....if he is loosing more fur now....it might be time to start thinking in another direction. Ive been watching this thread...and honestly....I don't think its a case of mites. When you mentioned that there is fur left behind on your shirt when he is on you, says to me that the fur is falling out on its own...not so much being scratched or rubbed out. Still thinking.....:thinking

I have to agree with Jo on looking in another direction, just don't know where to start. I suppose one just has to cover all possibilities. Curious as it seems to be just down the back like that. I wouldn't IMO continue to wash him, seems to be that would just rob him of his own natural oils.

Here is a picture I took today. You see how this is getting worse. I just dont know what to do. I have noticed him scratching more now. But he has been treated with the revolution. He doesnt really climb in and out of anything that could rubbing off his hair other me and my clothes. Could he be allergic to me? Maybe the oils in my skin?

have you noticed any dry patches??? I don't think this is a case of mites. The Revolution would have taken care of it by now.
How old is he?? I will look up the normal shed cycle of a grey squirrel. Does he feel warm? Has he felt warm??
mandibair
11-03-2011, 03:37 PM
sometimes when he wakes up and climbs out from under his blankets he feels warm, other times when hes just running around his feet feel cold and hes feels normal to me i guess. hes a closer pic you can see there is some little shiny white stuff on his fur.
