I just got a call from a woman who got my name and number from Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency. I am not licensed, but had agreed some time ago that they could call me as a last resort if necessary. I usually get rats b/c nobody else will take them.
Her cat brought a little squirrel in the house and was playing with it. Eyes open, but small, she says about 5" long; she checked it over and did not see any puncture wounds or other trauma. She took it right to TBV and was really worried about what would happen to it next, so asked a ton of questions and decided to try to find a rehabber on her own because they could not FOR SURE guarantee that they could find a rehabber who could take it. (so it would have to be put down, IF they couldn't find a rehabber)
She said they were very nice about it and said they would do their best, but she was still concerned and didn't want to take the chance.
Can someone help her with this little one? I would think that antibiotics should be given JUST IN CASE IT WAS BITTEN and it just doesn't show. She seems to care VERY MUCH.

Antibiotics are a must.....immediately, for a cat caught baby, with or without puncture wounds....

Okay, just called Jennifer back, she is in her car with the baby and is keeping it warm. (her husband is driving) She missed my last message and just left PETSMART with SQUIRREL SEED. Uh Oh!
Now she is on her way to WalMart to get some Pedialite and a syringe from the pharmacy.

Apparently they live in the Town and Country/Citrus Park area

If everyone else is full I can take him in....I have the time to spend nursing him and it would be nice to not have to throw away all these veggies! I will need to get more antibiotics though, I just used up all of my Cipro I got from Jackie.
Let me know if I can be of help! :)

THANK YOU, EVERYONE for your advice and offers. The baby is on his way back to Tampa Emergency Vet, and Michele will be taking him back to her place. She is aware that he was cat-caught and will make sure he gets antibiotics.

Thank you, dizzdigia for the offer to take him! How amazing that this baby had 2 immediate offers to care for him! I was going back and forth between the phone and the internet to coordinate. Be assured, there will be many more that need care!

Well done, TSB!!

Haven't heard from the clinic yet. Hoping the squirrel got dropped off and they are doing their medical exam etc. If I don't hear by 5pm, I will call.

Hey, dizzdigia, I don't think we have met here on the board. I see you are in Brandon. I am just a few miles north on Hwy 301. It's good to see someone so close by. If you are interested in rehabbing babies, you should send me a PM. Everyone I know is FULL and we are always looking for others that want to help.
