Subject: Squirrel Question
Date: Sun, 9 Oct 2011 01:21:42 -0400

I am sorry to email you uninvited, but we have a baby squirrel for about two weeks that fell out of a tree in NYC. He came home almost all pink and had contusions all over his right side.

I have purchased the Fox Valley formula and ultra boost; because he was very thin. He now has beautiful fur almost all over. His eyes are still closed but very active and gaining weight. I am happy to say, he has been doing well and growing, although very unsteady, jerky and shaking when walking around. He has teeth now and loves to nibble and sniff.

I have been scouring the squirrel boards every day reading and learning. I have registered (CitySquirrel) and sent three contact emails to them, but, have never received an activation email.

So, I am writing you because, while scouring the boards for information on sneezing (not sure maybe snorting like he is clearing his nose), no breathing trouble or breath sounds; though he makes lots of other squeaks and grunts, tonight was the first time he made that bird call sound twice and I haven’t run that fast in years (when I got to him he appeared to be sleeping).

I saw your email address that you had given a member. I need help; I don’t know if he is getting sick and I am almost frantic. I don’t know if he needs an antibiotic or how much? I have seen a member named FloNYC and Island Rehabber, are they located in the NYC vicinity? I am desperate and need to know if Wort (Disney Sword and the Stone) is sick?

Please any help you can offer would be appreciated.

GS1 - thank you for posting. I am really hoping that one of the rehabber will also reply soon.

It sounds like Kathleen is doing a very good job to date. FV & Ultra Boost!!! :thumbsup

I am going to make an assumption that she also has Wort on heat? Can you confirm?

As for the sneezing:

It is a Pfffft sound, right?
Has the baby aspirated?
Is Kathleen able to hear clicking when holding the baby up to her ear with every breath Wort takes?
If she does not hear clicking does she hear a congested sound, like cobwebs?
Has she changed laundry detergents?
Changed perfume?

Baby squirrels do twitch and make the Pfffft sound when they are sleeping. I've never had one make an alarm call while sleeping, but I guess it is possible. They also make the Pfffft sound when they are wide awake.

Maybe Wort was dreaming and this is why he made the alarm call? Hopefully others can comment on this soon.

If someone has her email, can you please ask her to re-register and then let us know after she does that? The system does not show anyone by that name, not even in the "awaiting registration" queue....:thinking

thank you milos mom and wonkawillie and pointy tale ...:thumbsup :D

from kathleen this morning in answer to milo's mom .....:D :thankyou

Thank you for the thread, I still can’t post… but he has heat (heating pad on half the box), gets warm formula (from hot water bath and wrist test). Has tee-shirts for bedding and moves around his strerlite tub with a well ventilated reptile lid (in and out of cover often)

has not aspirated (Don’t think… I haven’t seen milk come out of his nose) this morning was the only time he sneezed while eating (scared me!). He was doing the guppy mouth (which I thought easier…one drop at a time).

But now is trying to suck and bite the nipple when he does become still (which is not easy). He is full of energy. He moves so much almost franticlly; we have gone back to the dropper with the long nipple for better control. We have gone up too 5CC every 4 hours (except at night 5CC 12AM and 6AM.

After he eats he toilets’ like a Champ and this calms him and then he enjoys a curled up snuggle and sleeps.

No change in laundry detergent, and I only put perfume on after his morning feeding when on my way out the door for work (he is back to sleep and in his box and I have gone to get ready.) It is more of the Pfffft sound, and never when sleeping, but very frequent while awake, sometimes almost constant. No clicking, we check often, this is easy as he likes to snuggle with my son’s beard. He gets exercise on the bed (with towels because he toilets) while crawling around (if it can be called that, very jerky and twitchy, he falls over and losses balance and flips around.) I worry if it was from the fall on to the sidewalk from the tree) he is steady in our hands and loves to climb and grab our fingers and is in constant motion. He is sniffing everything (sometimes almost licking), nibbling at our fingers (usually gentle sometimes a pinch), and chewing the towel, his bottom teeth are pretty long and narrow.

The alarm call I have all sorts of assumptions… believe it or not here in lower Manhattan we have lots of animal sounds, hawks and birds mostly in the morning, dogs in the park and even can hear crickets in the summer…lol. Maybe a sound spooked him (just a guess), or he just wanted to be held, but he got picked up and snuggled when this happened; actually spent considerable time on our chests.

I am just really worried, because if he needs antibiotics, not sure where to get it and want to have it right away if needed. He is so small and fragile with such a hard start.

Thanks

Kathleen

from kathleen below with photos :)
:) ok will post .....

and will post your letter below....for others to get a heads up....

as for the play issue i think island rehabber is super strict she doesn't baby hers so that they wild up better....

but baby squirrels wild up anyway ....

and in the beginning they need companions/cuddles etc...

so unless you get some more baby squirrels then you are going to need to cuddle/play etc....

is that what she meant by no more playtime on the bed?

cls.

ps: i guess you don't need pictures of the teeth ... if she thinks they're fine then they probably are....

teeth photos would be like this:

one of you holds him in a baby wrap or whatever way you can to hold him....

someone else sticks something like a small pencil ....wood etc... between the top and bottom teeth .....

and a third person take the photo quick:poke

stosh2010 has some great photos of teeth with mira his now angel squirrel...

:) you'll love tsb.... and you must go visit stosh2010 site with rama and rama mama ...in costa rica ...almost as good as being there...:)

Thank You!!!

Island Rehabber called this morning and we had a great conversation, I am not as frantic as I was. She was wonderful. We will continue to watch him and now if he needs meds I know I can get them from someone nearby and knowledgeable! Now more than ever we appreciate the importance of the squirrel rehabbers. For all the people with a big enough heart to take a baby squirrel home, most probably lack the capacity to follow through and take care of them at this level.

She is also is trying to correct the login/activation problem. It is just so wonderful to have a community of people so genuinely interested in helping. It’s a relief to find people that truly care!!! We love animals and this is an invaluable support.

We are changing the bedding to fleece instead of tee-shirts and she advised me on some of the natural mother squirrel behaviors, so no more playtime on the bed…

We guess that he is still less than 4 weeks because his eyes are still closed – though he has sprouted teeth and a full layer of grey/black/brown/white fur. I have attached pictures from day one and today as a gauge of his progress, but pictures of his teeth will depend on his cooperation maybe as the day goes on ;-) …

Again, I can’t tank you enough for the immediate support and “life line”

Wort looks beauutiful! Good job, Kathleen & Son!
To clarify my comments re "no more playtime on the bed", I don't mean that you should not cuddle and sniff and squidge your baby squirrel. How could you resist? What I meant is that, at less than 8 wks of age, mamma squirrel WILL NOT allow her babies to roam outside the nest at all. The wobbliness and twitchyness that Kathleen described is exactly the reason why: Mamma squirrel is raising those babies IN A TREE and she cannot risk someone wobbling right off the branch! Therefore, babies should be fed, and cuddled and squidged and smooched IN THE HANDS, or wrapped in fleece, and then put back in their "nest". No wandering around on floors, beds, or tabletops -- it is not natural and would never be allowed by a true mamma squirrel.:peace (This is why in my threads where the babies are small you always see my ugly hands holding them. :D)

more from kathleen ...she still can't ge through....

:) you're absolutely not pestering....

i'm guessing the teeth aren't an issue ...

i'm wondering if you could use a different name ...maybe it's because we have a city_squirrel and the computer doesn't accept your name????

Thank for the go between, and I don’t mean to pester!!! Cant post yet. And I don’t want anyone to think I am ignoring their suggestions and help. You can’t imagine how much better I feel, not alone anymore!

He is getting plenty of snuggle and cuddle… who could resist!

As soon as I can post I will!

Going to try for teeth pictures they are very long… like little needles… Although, Patrick (my son) is more resistant of the poking around for the teeth photos… lol

To Nancy in New York: yes we will keep him over the winter, we had already planned on it, and immediately knew he was born very late in the year.

FloNYC came to my house last night!!! She was wonderful, spent time with us, teaching and checking Wort. His teeth are fine, no breathing noises and she checked our feeding tools; she gave us a 1cc syringe (we had a three). He is about 4 weeks old.

Wort is just fine!!!
