Hello, We have raised an orphaned squirrel since 8/4/11 when he was about 2 weeks old. He is a great little boy however we are having concerns about his ability to adapt socially and releasing him. We have spoke to a rehabber and she told us that he really needs to be around other squirrels. I am not sure we are being fair to him. We live in Tampa, Fl and if anyone could take him or has any suggestion it would be greatly appreciated. Kim

:Welcome That's so nice of you to put his best interests first! It's SO hard to do when we fall in love so quickly with them. I've messaged a couple of people close to you. If there's any way they can help, I'm sure they will! :)
In the meantime, what's his name? What have you been feeding him? Is his health okay?
Thanks for being so thoughtful. Singles do much better with buddies! :jump

Yes, we have become very attached to him and are trying to not be selfish. His name is Ringo and he is very handsome and healthy. I started him out with Esiblac and am now feeding him Zupreen monkey biscuits, broccoli, apple, sunflower seeds and a pecan or walnut everyday. I also still give him 3cc of Esbilac every morning. Not sure if this a great diet however after many internet searches I think it is okay. Kim

You should look up the "Healthy Diet for Squirrels" in the nutrition section. It's a great list of a variety of foods they can have. They need a variety. I would definately limit the nuts to not more than one per day for now. MBD is very scary, and you don't want to risk those nuts blocking his calcium. Information on it can be found on this site too. I'm thinking it's listed in several places, but if nothing else, it's under specific ailments.
I would continue formula for as long as he will take it. Most of us use Fox Valley now, as the Esbilac had started caused problems with runny stools and such. However, if you're trying to rehome, and he's doing okay, I would think you could continue it until you find someone that can put him with a buddy.
I'm not a licensed rehabber...someone else should be on shortly to give you better information. :)
Sounds like you've been doing a great job! Thanks so much for taking Ringo in! I JUST LOVE SQUIRRELS! lol!

I've sent Jackie in Tampa a message, email, and I've tried to call her. Hopefully she'll receive one of them soon. :)

I should probably ask...we are talking about a grey squirrel, right? hahaha!

Hi there! My little guy is about 8 weeks old, He has been dealing with a hand injury for the past month that Jackie is very familiar with. If Jackie sees this and thinks that Grrr would benefit from having a new friend I would be more than happy to help you out! Eventhough im home all day I know he gets bored with me and would love to have a friend to wrestle and snuggle with! :D

Thank you to everyone who replied about our little Ringo. I am glad to say that we have found a great home for him. Our house seems empty without him however we feel we have done the right thing for him. I miss him though. Kim

Jackie, You are an angel on earth and our little Ringo is so lucky to have found you. When I think of the day my husband brought him home maybe two weeks old so skinny, cold and with scraps all over him where he scooted across the concrete to get to his boots I am amazed. He is very special and lucky to have the perfect shoulder and home. I love him so and the picture of him on your shoulder has brought a big smile to my face. Kim

My dear Jackie, You, Fred and all the kids at squirrel central are amazing and it is our pleasure to do whatever we can to help you. As you know we are crazy about our little Ringo and to have someone like you to take him in so that he can be a real squirrel in a godsend. I was so afraid of releasing him and him not having the skills that he needs and now he is learning everthing that he needs to be a Free squirrel one day at Jackie's Squirrel University. What a lucky little squirrel he is! Thank you Jackie for being the selfless person that you are. We should all have a little bit of Jackie in us. Kim

what an AWESOME post!! I am a bit worried Ringo isn't getting spoiled enough though ;)

seriously, how awesome for Ringo's mommy and daddy to offer him a better chance even though it was a HARD decision!!

Also glad to see my boys arent the only ones wanting to go after the wireless mouse; if I dont hide mine, i find it in pieces all around the desk. they love to take off the battery cover :dono

Ringo and his cage buddy Fozzy Bear{grinn's baby} will be moving outside this week!

I need to build a roof for their cage and they will start the release process!
Small chance of rain for the next two days, so may bring them back inside if it does.

Good luck this week Kim,{wilsonK} I hope eevrything goes as planned and we see you soon:Love_Icon

I am so excited that Ringo and Fozie are starting their release process. Ringo has such a special place in my heart I cannot believe how much I love him. My selfish side wants to bring him home and keep him forever. However I know that his freedom is the best gift we can give him. Jackie you have done such a wonderful thing for him and because of you he has a beautiful future ahead of him. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are truly a special person.

:wott They are free...long over due..
the boys are released!! :wahoo
Fozzie is nicely keeping himself busy, avoiding other sqs..:flash3
Ringo came oout, stomped his feet..entered their new un hung nest box laying on top of release cage, chittered his teeth, stomped some more...jumped on the umbrella and headed up the oak, passed all of bananas boxes, stopping once to pee on her box:nono and continued to climb until I lost all visuals of him...
he'll be back...
Lord I worry about these over brave explorers, oye!
It's a big tree, a big world and a bigger sky!
Be sweet squirrels! But be the sqs you wanna be:Love_Icon

Wow, just seems like yesterday he was a tiny little scraped up baby that Bruce bought home from work. I remember praying to just be able to get him through the first week and then the second week and so on. Now he is a big boy in the scary world and one that I love from the bottom of my heart. I hope and pray that he does well. One thing I do know is his chances are so much better because we have Jackie in our lives. She is our hero. I cannot not say enough about her and Fred and what they have done for us they are amazing people. I know he is in Gods hands and I also know that Jackie is his guardian angel.
