My friend was out jogging and she found a squirrel that was laying on the side of the road. She came back and got me and we went to go see how bad it was. The adult squirrel (we call her Lilian) was laying on her side, one of her eyes is shut tight with goo and one had been laying in the dirt and is caked with it. She doesn't have any other marks or bruises on her. She moves her front paws quite a bit and occasionally her back ones. She hasn't gotten up since we've seen her but her spine is intact and there are no obvious breaks on any of her other bones. We put her in a basket full of paper-towels and napkins. I tried giving her some water and she got a couple drops down before refusing anymore... I'm not really sure what to do at this point. I've never taken care of a squirrel before and I just want her to get better.. is there somewhere I can call to get her help? or is it just better to take her to the vet to get put down? we don't have a lot of money to spare because we're in college.. but we want to help get Lillian back on her feet..

i'm sorry no one has come on yet.....

no don't keep trying to get her to drink water....

when she's better she might have a small shallow bowl of water with clean pebbles/rocks in it so that she doesn't accidently get water in her nose... but for now there's not much you can do... i'm sorry.:grouphug

is she still lying on her side?

cls.

I am not a rehabber, but make sure the airways are clear. You mentioned dirt from the fall or hit by a car ? Keep the noise level as quiet as possible. Every sound will cause a reaction, as they are prey animals. Use heavy gloves when handling her for your protection. You can wrap her "burrito style" in a towel or fleece to handle her and to restrain her when she becomes more active.
remember...with out your response of bringing her inside...she would be at the mercy of the elements. THANK YOU for caring.
Please observe and report any changes.

Thank you for caring for little Lillian.
I am not a rehabber, but here are some basics for right now until a rehabber gets here.
Right now she needs a dark, quiet place (no radio, voices, TV, other animals, etc), and warmth.
If you have a heating pad (without the auto shut-off) turn it on low and place it 1/2 way under the container you have her in. This if she gets too warm she can move herself away from the heat.

An old t-shirt, sweatshirt, a small blanket, etc will give her something to burrow into and will also help with warmth and her sense of feeling safe.

You can also make a rice buddy for her. Take 1 cup of uncooked rice and place it in a tube sock. Tie the end of the sock closed with a knot. Place the rice filled sock in the microwave for about a minute. Massage the sock to mix up the rice so that there are no hot spots, which could burn her. Place the rice buddy in the container with her. The rice buddy should feel very warm, not hot. After it cools down you just re-heat it in the microwave and then massage and give it back to her.

The container she is in should have a lid of some sort so if she suddenly feels better or feel threatened she will not jump out and take off and possibly injure herself further. Just make sure that the lid has holes in it so she can breath. Cardboard is not the best option, but will work in a pinch...she can chew through it though...

Instead of water, mix up a rehydrationsolution:

1 teaspoon salt
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 quart water

Warm it to 100-105 degrees (warm but not hot to the touch) and try offering it with a small syringe or eyedropper. They like that sweet/salty taste and it is a homemade version of pedialyte so it will help rehydrate her.

If she is an adult, she is at least a pound lus in weight. You can give her -.15cc of INFANT motrin (ibuprophen) every 4 hours - it will help with pain and swelling if any is present.

Sometimes the special ones are meant to be found by someone as compassionate as yourself....to make their journey over the bridge more peaceful. Lillian knew she was loved...:Love_Icon
