I found an orphaned squirrel approximately 2-3 weeks old last week 9-25-11 in Houston. Im a college student at SHSU and i had to bring him from my parents house bc they didn't have time to recover him. Ive been told by some pet store lady to give him cat milk but I'm not sure if thats the best thing to do for him. However i saw so many conflicting ideas on the internet so i had no choice and bought it anyways. I tried looking for a syringe with a rubber top but couldn't find any at all and i think that resulted in him drinking the milk too fast and now he has diarrhea. He also makes a clicking sound and i found out that could be fatal? Im scared, i want him to live :( . Please help me nurse him back to a better state and if anyone is around the Houston area this weekend i would love for you to help me or refer someone to help me! Also what should i feed him in the mean time, i read its best to stick to small amounts of pedialyte until he feels better. please help and thank you!

You are correct kitten milk is NOT good for a squirrel....... you need fox valley formula for squirrels.
as far as the clicking goes - the poor little thing has pneumonia and needs to be on MEDS - ASAP!! - or this condition could become fatal.
Let me post in the E.R. Section see if we have any one near you that has any medication on hand that can help.
Please get the baby on a heating pad to keep it warm (place blanket over pad).
In the mean time you can order some fox valley 32/40 and
pick up some items from the grocery store to make Goats Milk Formula until the Fv arrives.
GM Recipe:
1 cup Goats Milk (dilute if can)
1/3 cup Heavy Cream
1/3 cup Full Fat Vanilla Yogurt
Fox Valley:

I need immediate medical care for my three week old squirrel. He started making clicking noises while feeding and bubbles were coming out of his nose for about the last few feedings, he's also lost a bit of appetite. Please Help! :( I live in Houston, TX
Make sure he is warm on fleece ontop of heating pad on low. You will need to get antibiotics into him very soon and if you hang on someone else will come on here and tell you exactly what to do!

I am about 100 miles east of Houston , right above Beaumont. Is there any way you could meet me half way tomorrow? I can care for this baby - have vet, meds, etc. But, for health reasons, the less driving I have to do, the better.

Hi, My name is Carla, I'm a college student and i'm new at this! i found an orphaned squirrel last sunday at the park. He was in the middle of the trail with no nest or mother to be found :( I brought him to my parents house in Houston. There i researched and gathered information on the internet on now to help him out. So far he's been okay but lately its been hard because i don't have the right tools to feed him or much knowledge and so I'm gonna need all the help i can get because I want to help him live. If there is a rehabber or anyone who is willing to take him so he can have a prosperous life and live in Houston please let me know! he's 2-3 weeks old and an adorable little fellow :) If not please give me advice or direct me to where i can get feeding tools/cages/etc.

:Welcome
I will start a new thread for you with a link to this intro in Non-Life Threatening help needed.
There are TX members, but I won't know who might be available to take on another baby.
In the meantime,
he needs to be on a heating pad (no auto shut-off), with the pad under half of his container (if he gets too warm, he'll move to the other half).
I assume, you already hydrated him.
The best formula, specifically designed for squirrels, is Fox Valley. It's available either at www.henryspets.com or www.foxvalleynutrition.com
At henryspets you will be able to get syringes and nipples. You will need 1cc syringes (O-ring are one of the most recommended) and silicone nipples. Don't get large syringes as that will increase the risk of aspiration (and aspiration can be deadly, esp. when you do not have a vet)
Here are two recipes... one for the formula you can use while you are waiting for FV to arrive, but also one for Pedialyte in case your baby is dehydrated.
It IS important to make sure he's not dehydrated: do not feed formula to a dehydrated baby. First you make sure they are warm, very warm, and THEN you make sure they are well hydrated... and then you can think of feeding her formula.
Pedialyte Recipe
I quart warm water
3Tbs sugar
1tsp salt
Good for 24 hours
Do not administer for more than 24 hours.
Homemade Formula
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup All natural vanilla yogurt (Liberty)
Mix well and keep in a glass container in the refrigerator.
Lasts 72 hours in the fridge.
Warm the formula to feed – only takes a FEW seconds in the microwave. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERHEAT, it will curdle the yogurt.
Do you have pics? It would help us evaluate their age and if you could weigh them it would also help. You can use a food scale (grams scale)
The amount to feed is 5-7% of body weight. You will also need scales to monitor his progress - he should be gaining weight gradually.
Give him old t-shirts and fleece pieces and anything that is not loopy (no towels etc).
Create a rice buddy: fill a sock with dry rice, tie tightly, microwave so that it's nice and warm. Just make sure it's not hot because it will burn him. When you take it out of the microwave press/wiggle the rice inside so that if there are any hot spots, they will disperse and not burn him. Put this rice buddy for him to snuggle.
Best to post help questions in Non-Life Threatening forum - will get faster attention.

Wow thanks so much! I will for sure buy her the ingredients to make the temporary formula and I got someone from beaumont already offering to take him which is great! :) again Thank you! i already made a rice buddy warmed him up and he's loving it! and i also have him drinking pediyalite because he has a bit of diarrhea, I'm giving him small amounts every 2 hours. Is that good? He's looking a bit better but I know i have to wait it out and hopefully deliver him to Beaumont on time :)
Out of all my attempts this was the only website where i got a quick and helpful response. Im really thankful :)

I do have pictures but i don't know how to upload them on one of these threads. And thanks He has a bit of diarrhea, its gotten a lot better since i stopped giving him the formula for the last few feeds and gave him pediyalite instead. When should i start giving him the temp. formula?
did you have an offer of a home in beaumont?
if it's muffinsquirrel ... then i'd run over there ... unless the skuls or gardenfairygen have room.....
but if muffin has offered ...omg... go ... she has a really nice area for them...:thumbsup

Oh okay thanks I'm new to this i don't know how the threads work too well. I'll stay on this thread from now on
have sent you mrs skuls phone numbers both home and cell... talk to her ...
my only advice is get her to mrs skuls.... huntsville to houston is just over an hour....
or get him to an experienced or even non experienced vet once mrs skul tells you the baytril dosage he needs.....
emergency clinics ... maybe just show up and ask for baytril ...
ask mrs skul the laws in texas first though ...you don't want him confiscated....
what about the rehabber that 4swerlz had given you above? maybe she's willing to take him or have a vet or a rehabber number that she'll let you use for vet?

Ok! I gave NewBie MuffinSquirrel Phone Number. She is going to get the Baby to her in the morning. :thumbsup3 I spoke with Carla and after a long talk and some over the phone instruction. I really do not think this baby has Phenomena. The noise she is hearing is only going on while eating and a little after. When Baby is sleeping, there is no clicking nothing at all. There is no noise while breathing. Just a peaceful sleeping Baby. :Love_Icon If she runs into trouble to night she will call me and we will work out a meeting place. That Is Only If We Have To. :thumbsup3
:thankyou Thank You GS1,Rhapsody,4skwerlz,HHRP.For all your help. :thankyou

This was one lucky little squirrel who found his way into your life. Far too many times the finder thinks they are too cute, and try doing this on their own.:Love_Icon You can read their stories in the "All Squirrels go to Heaven" thread.
I love a person that puts the little fuzzers needs above their own....:bowdown
