I am very concerned that my 7 month old Twitch has just recently become very aggressive with me. He also has audible, raspy breathing, but not wheezing, for a couple of days. I read about the Bordatella showing up in squirrels and am definitely concerned. I just had 5 female cats returned from animal hospital for spaying where I know they do not require Bordatella vaccines prior to surgery. I need to know what other symptoms to look for or is there another possibility. Also, what are the treatment options that have been successful? I have Azythromyacin on hand for my cats, is this a tolerable medication for squirrel-boy and how much? I also plan to call the local exotic vet but I very much value the opinion and experience of all you Squirrel lovers on this forum! I know I ask a lot at once, but as you all can relate I'm sure, I've grown very attached to my little buddy and am very concerned about his health and finding the cause of his sudden personality change. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

I will try to post pictures later... it is not as easy as I had hoped!

If you are talking about bordetella, vets use clavamox when treating dogs for this. I believe cats actually can get it also. I do not know about squirrels. I had 3 dogs rescued from animal control have kennel cough in my home but none of the many squirrels in my house at the same time caught it. I have used clavamox for squirrels before for urinary tract infections and cat attacks with no problems but I would make sure you had a vet diagnose your little guy.
Good luck!

Squirrels can and do get Bordatella. Clavamox (Augmentin)is the medicine of choice.
Strength: 62.5mg/ml
Dose: Orally twice a day@ 0.016cc/ml every 50 grams of weight.
Give probiotics 2 hours before or after each dose to counteract GI upset.

Is it possible that Bordatella would cause his sudden aggressiveness? I do understand that sometimes they just flip and if that's the case we will definitely be releasing him, but is it possible that after a round of antibiotics he could return to my sweet little buddy? I know that only time will tell but if any one has any hopeful words of encouragement, I could really use them right now! After 3 bites in 3 days, I'm one very sad squirrel Momma today.

The good news is I should be able to start his antibiotics tonight!
