My baby squirrel has pneumonia. She has already had her first feeding of Cipro but now she is no longer going to the bathroom. She pees some but not as much as usual and she has not pooped all day. Her next feeding is in 20 minutes and I'm not sure what to feed her. I have the homemade pedialite in the fridge as well as the fox valley with some yogurt added to it. I gave her some pedialite about 45 minutes ago and she peed some but not the normal amount. I'm worried that if I give her the formula she will bloat :/ does anyone know what to do?

Go ahead and feed her as she needs her nutrition...... try giving her some pumpkin pie filling (natural, no spices) or some apple juice to help move her bowels along...... and remember that dehydration will create constipation.... how old is she?

Okay Thank You! Her next antibiotic feeding is coming up soon too. When should I really start to worry about her not going to the bathroom? She is a very tiny thing, only 21 grams. I will run up to the store and get apple juice asap

It's very hard to tell how old she is. She's only 21 grams but she has a good amount of fur on her and her ears are no longer sticking to her head. I have had her for two weeks now. So POSSIBLY 3-4 weeks old. Maybe older? She had hair on her when I first rescued her and her ears were not sticking then either.

At 21 grams I would not let her go to many feedings with out pooping..... is she still a pinkie? - how many days have you had her..... it may take a new found squirrel a few days of eating before they get on a regular pooping schedule.
Do you see any brown debris on her blanket? - if yes, then she is going on her own.

This little one is under weight and needs some extra calories in her fox valley..... when you go to the store please pick up some full fat vanilla yogurt and heavy cream (whipping cream in the milk section)...... add yogurt to the mix - then heavy cream tomorrow.
When you mix a new batch - 1/3 cup each to your regular fox valley mix.
1.3 cup hot water
1/2 cup fox valley
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup full fat vanilla yogurt

I have had her for 2 weeks, she was doing fine until the pneumonia. And no, she is not going on her own. She must have been the runt or something because she is extremely tiny but shows signs of being older.

I just started putting some yobaby yogurt in her formula today because of the antibiotics she's on and I will add the whipping cream tomorrow as well.

After the issue of the constipation and pneumonia is over with...... you might want to look into adding Ultra Boost to her FV to help put some well needed weight on her...... I have been using it for my little Henry and he has gone from 25 grams to 50 grams in two weeks (he is almost 8 wks but looks 3 wks) --its AWESOME STUFF!!

Amber, I don't mean to scare you but your squirrel needs help. 21 grams and eyes opening is not a healthy baby. I got your email but it was too late to call you. I've been busy most of the day with my own babies. Will call you tomorrow.

Yes she is on fox valley and I thought that was a pretty low weight too but she doesn't look or act unhealthy. She's very active and other than the pneumonia she hasn't seemed to have any problems. I thought she would have a lot because when I got her, her tail was cut off by a chainsaw but with the help of neosporin, it seems to be doing much better. I assumed she was the runt or something because of her size. I can put up another picture if that helps. Maybe tell me if she looks too skinny or something? :thinking

Oh btw! She is no longer constipated! I stayed up all night with her and she has now gone to the bathroom twice with ease!

Awww, she is so little! Yes, please get the boost asap and add it to her formula. How much and how often is she eating?

If she has potty issues again, I would try doing the goats milk recipe for a little while, easier to digest, will still get calories and can slowly switch back (or even do a 50/50 gm/fv, which I did for some time with ones with tummy issues). She looks sort of like a failure to thrive baby, which is scary. She needs calories, but has to be able to digest them. See if you can get her to take small amounts of water between feedings, too. Sometimes if they are even slightly dehydrated, they can become constipated and also will eat less. Giving it between feedings does not dilute the formula, as she needs those calories!

HI Amber..
TY Mrs.Oakley..she DOES need O ring syringe if you can help.
I have been helping M&M via telephone with meds etc
she understands the need for probotics, I recommended yogurt in her formula..
.
Rhapsody has been giving good advise, however, NO HEAVY CREAM yet:shakehead
and NO to the PUMPKIN PIE FILLING, we advise canned pumpkin...NOT pie filling:shakehead ...as it will bind more.
Yes to DILUTE apple juice...
however it seems as if that issue has been resolved:thumbsup
I agree, the baby is very small for her age...hoping she can hurdle and do well with Fox Valley formula...nutrition heals.

I have been giving her about 1cc every 3 hours. Sometimes a LITTLE bit more (1.1-1.2ccs) if she is digesting everything well and her stomach isn't bloated. I will start to give her pedialite between feedings more often. I have been every once in a while when she seems dehydrated or hasn't gone potty (the dehydration issue was when I first received her, poor thing barely had a drop of water in her). And Jackie, I'm so glad I noticed your post. I was just about to add goats milk to her next formula! I will make sure not to do that though. She seems to be doing better. I am hoping to meet up with Ms. Oakley soon though just to make sure.

Is this syringe okay? I got it from the vet yesterday

The syringe you pic'ed is a disposable and will work for a feeding or two before it starts to stick..then it's useless:shakehead
Disposibles can cause aspiration...scarey.
You need an O-ring syringe.

here is the link again to the syringe stickey:)
You are doing well with FV with yogurt for the time being...
if she appears dehydrated {use the tent test} offer rehydration fluid between feedings..
I would feed her every few hours if she is only taking small amounts...however watch her tummy forbloat...make sure the formula is very warm, not hot, not cold.
I had Amber {M&M} buy a scale as I could not believe her size/weight either when I was helping to dose her ABs...she is soooo small:grouphug
I couldn't believe it either...
I did not diagnose the pnuemonia, I just helped dose the meds:peace
I hope she is doing better...:Love_Icon cute little baby girl:Love_Icon
Thank you Mrs.Oakley:bowdown

(when i make pumpkin pie - i get can pumpkin)

Rhapsody has been giving good advise, however, NO HEAVY CREAM yet:shakehead I have to ask............. WHY?
as I recommended that she add cream to the mix (after) the constipation issue was resolved NOT during the constipation issue....
this suggestion was to put weight on the little girl Squirrel while mom waited for the Ultra Boost to arrive.
Asking so I too may LEARN. :)
