Hi,

My male squirrel, BD, has a sore on his penis. I'm new at this so maybe this is normal and he is growing, but it sure looks like a sore to me. He does not appear to be bothered by it, I cleaned it and put a tiny bit of bacitracin on it. I'm attaching some pictures - the close up looks worse than it is and it was taken after I put bacitracin. Can anyone help me with what this is and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks,

Gia

Yep - it looks like he has been bothering IT a little to much..... apply some Neosporin to HELP IT HEAL!! --and have a talk with HIM - :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl

:rotfl Thanks Carolyn, this makes me feel a lot better. I actually may need to talk to both or one of his sisters, too -- In the meantime I'll keep treating it :D

I don't want to be all Debbie Downer here but while this seems funny, this issue can actually be life threatening, so I would be VERY AGGRESSIVE about dealing with it. You need to determine who is doing it - him or a sib. I would purchase one of the pet friendly "Yuk" or bitter apple products and using a q-tip or little watercolor brush, very carefully paint AROUND the penis - don't get it ON his raw little peenie. Putting a good sized blob of the ointment on it before you do this will help protect it. Hopefully it will help. But find out who is doing the suckling. If it is a sib they may need to be separated.

Along with what Cr Mom said, he also may need to wear a little sock [holes cut in it for his back feet and tail] around his middle to keep the suckling from happening.

Cool - thanks Critter mom and Pierre - these are great ideas. I was thinking about the bitter apple - I have 4 different products that I had previously purchased for my dogs/puppies. Forster smith/chew stop, hartz bitter aide coat saver, lambert kay boundry bitters. They all look safe, if you feel otherwise, please let me know. I will make sure I avoid the tip and put on after ointment. Since I've been doing ointment each feeding, it does look a little better. If this fails, then the sock will come on. Thanks again.

Pierre, this is probably a stupid question, but how will he be able to pee and poop with the sock on?

how will he be able to pee and poop with the sock on?The same as with a diaper........ it will soak it up and need to be changed or washed.
