Hello all,
Found this board while searching for info on my little buddy. I found a lot of great information on nutritional needs, however squirrel blocks are unavailable here. Luckily fresh produce is inexpensive and plentiful so I make due with the resources available.
Without further adieu, here is Sóc

Here he is in May around the time he came into my life

Here he is eating his favorite snack, soya beans

Eating some more soya beans
I believe Sóc is around 5.5 months old. I am unsure of what species of squirrel he is, and one reason I joined this board was in the hope that someone could educate me in just what exactly he is.

Welcome to the Squirrel Board ! :)
Is that squirrel native to Vietnam ?
I am sure someone on this board will be able to tell you what sort it is ! :)
Also more pics of it - the more the better ! :)

Not sure what type your fuzzer is. Would it be possible to re-post the photos in a larger size?? It might help with identification.
WELCOME to TSB...I am in Costa Rica...we have members from ALL over the World.

Looks like Soc might be a Berdmore's Ground Squirrel:
Berdmore's Ground Squirrel
Conservation status:Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)[1]
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Rodentia
Family: Sciuridae
Subfamily:Callosciurinae
Tribe: Callosciurini
Genus: Menetes
Thomas, 1908
Species: M. berdmorei
Binomial name
Menetes berdmorei
Blyth, 1849
The Berdmore's Ground Squirrel (Menetes berdmorei) is a ground squirrel found in Southeast Asia, from the east of Myanmar to Vietnam. It is however absent on the Malay peninsula, as well as the islands.
The rarely known squirrel has a greybrown back and a white belly. Most striking are stripes on the side - on each side one beige and below a black stripe. The head is pointy, so this squirrel resembles a mouse or a treeshrew. Its length is 20 cm (7.9 in), not including the 15 cm (5.9 in) long tail.
As a ground squirrel it is rarely found on trees, but spends most of the time in the thick underwoods of the rainforests. However it is also found in fields or villages, especially in rice fields it is sometimes omnipresent. Despite it being quite common only very little is known about the life of this squirrel. Despite its name, it is not a close relative of the ground squirrels of the tribe Marmotini

Sorry for the small pictures. I think if you click on them it links to very large size photo. Not used to working with a free image hosting service.
He's a cute little thing. He hasn't gotten much bigger in recent weeks. After seeing photos, i do believe him to be a berdmore ground squirrel. He is about 6.5 inches long now, so it doesn't look like he will be growing much larger, which is a good thing. Thanks stosh, for pointing me in the right direction. His tail is bushy, so its not like the ground squirrels I'm used to from the states.
Chickenmom, this place is amazing. Been here 2 years and not planning on returning to the US anytime soon. I love it here.

It is still called Saigon by everyone in the south. Saigon technically refers to the city center. Ho Chi Minh City is the metro area, but everyone calls it Saigon here. Only tourists and foreigners call it H C M C. Being an American, I always heard it called Saigon.
