View Full Version : Sudden trouble urinating!

I think my baby is having some distress. Everything has been going fine, but after his last two feedings (just now, and four hours ago) he hasn't urinated (or defacated). Is this at all normal? He also seemed more agitated than normal when I stimulated him (he usually squirms a little, but he seemed to want to make me stop).

He is four weeks, weighing about 45g. I feed 2.6cc of FV mixed with 1/4 Ultraboost approx. every four hours. There doesn't appear to be any irriatation on his genitals. To stimulate, I wet a Q-tip in warm water and very gently stroke from his tummy downwards.

His bedding is clean (cut-up squares of fleece) and he's half-on the heating pad, so nothing changed there. I did noticed he was urinating a bit more last night---could he have "run out" for some reason? Anything I should be looking for in terms of a bladder infection? :thinking

Okay, so I just fed him again. When I was holding him and getting his formula ready, he pooped a bunch in my hand. After feeding, he did urinate and pooped again, but there was a tiny trace of BLOOD! What's wrong? Any ideas?:dono

He could be constipated....... try giving him some plain water in between his regular feeding of fox valley.
And --do you see any brown debris in his bedding? if yes, then he is pooping in his bed and prob peeing at the same time.

Yes---I noticed a lot more (yellow actually). When I stimulate him, he seems to usually go just fine. I'll give him some water and see if it helps. Could the Ultraboost be contributing to this? Should I always give him water, or just for the time being? My SIL will be babysitting while I'm at work tomorrow, so I want to make sure she knows what to do. :thankyou

Should I always give him water, or just for the time being? Since you mentioned this...... this happened to My HENRY when I first started him on the Ultra Boost (he got constipated) for a few days --then all went back to normal.
So give water for a few days - then stop.

Okay, will do! He's actually been on Ultraboost for almost a week, I think. This is the first time this has happened, although my SIL did mention last week that she had trouble getting him to pee a couple of times.

Warm water, right?

I found my baby Driveway just last friday (September 16th, 2011) at work. When I first started feeding him he was peeing and pooping regularly. Now he doesn't seem to want to pee or poop. I don't give him Ultraboost or whatever it's called but I do feed him Fox Valley. Would water be good for him as well? PLEASE HELP!:dono

How old is he?
How much does he weigh?
How much does he eat and how often?

....... Is he dehydrated? (do the pinch test)

Babies on formula who are less than 8-9 weeks old do not need water. Dehydraton will cause yellow pee and constipation. It may be that you are not mixing enough water into your formula -- please remember with the Ultra Boost it can only be ONE FOURTH of the total amount of powder, but you're still adding the water as if it was all regular formula. (Don't add the Ultra Boost after you mix the powder is what I'm saying: measure out one part UB to three parts regular FV, then add 8 parts water. )

Do you know how old he is? How long have you been feeding him Fox Valley? Mine actually did this right before I got my FV, and I just mixed a little bit of canned pumpkin puree' (the plain stuff, without spices) with his formula. Worked really well. I think a little apple juice can help too.

His pee is still totally clear. I think I mix the Ultra Boost right: 3 tsp FV, 1 tsp Ultra Boost, 8 tsp water? Is that right? I actually usually put in just a teeny bit more water anyway. He's gaining weight pretty fast now, should I just leave the Ultra Boost out for a while? Although I think he's still really small---43 grams, at 4 weeks. And I'm now pretty sure he's a foxer---his fur is coming in brown and his ears have a little tinge of orange on them.

should I just leave the Ultra Boost out for a while? No - at the age and at that weight I would give him the Boost to get some well needed weight onto his bones....... he should be around 85 grams --and thats on the low end of the scale.
Just mix as IR stated........ 3/4 FV & 1/4 Boost --lots of Water

Oh, geez. He's a little runt, then. Although he doesn't seem overly skinny to me and he's eating well (then again, this is my first baby). Could he just be really mini? Should I continue feeding according to his weight? Is it enough? I don't want to bloat him.

Yes - feed according to his weight ---and keep the Boost in his mix (keep in mind that he can drink between 2 - 3 cc of FV per feeding) -- :thumbsup
How many feedings does he get each DAY?

I'm feeding him 6 times, about every four hours: 5am, 9am, 12:30pm, 4pm, 8:00pm, 11:30pm. Is this enough? And going up to 3cc's wouldn't make him bloat? Sometimes he can't seem to get through the full 2.6cc lately. I went back to the 1cc syringes and just use more of them so I can keep them warm in my mug of hot water. He eats so slowly toward the end. Hmmm.

Sounds like more than enough. He should pork up eventually -- you're doing all the right stuff. :)

I do the exact same thing with the syringes. Preload them and keep replacing the water in the glass to keep it nice and warm. One tip, if you don't use nipples, the formula will come out and replace itself with water. I have a friend who doesn't use nipples and this has happened to her...Hmmmm:thinking

Maura if you see this, this is why I don't know how to feed and reload a syringe, I've never had to do it.....:rotfl :rotfl :rotfl

I'll get some pics of him tonight--he's getting so sweet and cute now!

I actually use an insulated mug (for coffee) because it keeps the water warmer longer. But I'm going to order a bunch of 1cc syringes and more nipples. When I ordered the 3cc syringes from FV, he gave me a bunch of little blue caps so the formula stays in--very handy! I want a lot on hand...I'm too lazy to reload! I think the 1cc are smoother than the 3cc for some reason, too.

His little bottom seems kind of irritated, so I put a dab of neosporin on it this morning. Also, I noticed a darkish looking (very tiny) area under the skin just above where his scrotum is. I'm worried about that...

Sorry! Worked until 8:30p last night, got him from the babysitter, fed him, fed me, did laundry, napped and fed him again. Today and tomorrow are the same, but I'll get some pics tomorrow! I felt bad last night...a friend is closing her business so I'm helping her right now. Thank heavens for my SIL who is an excellent babysitter!
