Just received a call from a lady that has a Squirrel with POX (small amount on feet & belly) --what course of action needs to be taken to Cure the Pox?
- meds or does she personally need to go see a vet for this medical problem?

Pox responds to acyclovir, brand name Valtrex, used for chicken pox, shingles, herpes virus. Acyclovir is an antiviral, pox is a virus.

Have her check and see if anyone she knows has any.

Does she have a wildlife vet that will prescribe this? A lot of vets get tweaky about prescribing anti virals to animals that are going to be released...

mmm I really dislike pox... but your answer may lie with another FART member. Jackie may have on hand the meds that are needed! plus tons of hours of experience with pox! I have dealt with it b4 and even tho miles away I couldnt have done it without Jackie!

Many vets & wildlife centers, even in FL, will not TOUCH a pox case. They don't want their whole place infected with it. Her best bet is acyclovir. With all the geezers in Florida, EVERYBODY has had shingles at one time or another, and most of them have leftover Valtrex :thumbsup
PS: that's how I happened to have it...poor geezer BF had one leftover tablet. :)

I was not able to f/u as I spent the last 24 hrs in the ER with my mother - then she went to surgery ----I am exhausted!!
