I am meeting a friend tomorrow around Noon w/a baby Squirrel. Eyes not open but has fur.
Found in backyard. Waited a couple of hours w/no return of Momma.
Hopefully, the Squirrel will live through the night. She is keeping him warm. Has no syringe but was attempting to give it a homemade solution.
As many of you know, I already have a Squirrel by the name of Nos. I do NOT need another Squirrel! I am at my max w/all my Critters!
Believe me, it isn't becos I don't want to keep it!
Will not take him to a Shelter unless promised will be kept alive!
There must be a Rehabber in the San Francisco Bay Area for Squirrels???
I know we have a Lindsey Wildlife Center in the East Bay some where that has a wonderful reputation.
I can keep it for a few days if need be but just want to find the appropriate place for this sweet Critter before I fall in love!
Thanks all!
My best,
Dana

Dana, do you have everything you are gonna need for now? Syringes, heating pad, rehydration solution - go to the nutrition forum and read the sticky for Temporary Goats Milk Formula if you don't have FV...

I picked up the baby squirrel around 11:30A. I had to meet her about 25 miles away so took a while to get home.
The baby I am calling "Peace" for now due to it being 911 was not in good shape by the time I arrived home.
She had only given the squirrel some honey and liquid, I believe? I warned her about aspiration, etc.
The eyes show some slits. I am guessing 4 weeks?
When I arrived home w/Peace, he did not have much life to him. Cold. Obviously, quite week. Was not sure if he was going to survive?
I have had Peace on a heating pad most of the time. Can crawl off if too warm. Gave some Pedilyte by dropper. Best way I could control. I am giving Pedilyte every 3 to 4 hours as tolerated.
Peace pooped shortly after first feeding.
I need to dig out some Fox Valley I ordered some time ago from Leigh at HHB 's. I am sure the expiration date is good.
My question is what "ratio" of water to "fox valley?" Do I start tomorrow or give Peace another day of Pedilyte.
How much should I give and how often?
I probably just need to read through TSB but thought this would be easier.
I want to stabilize Peace for a few days. I will decide where I am taking Peace. I just have to be assured will not be PTS.
I will start calling around in a day or so.
I want him rehabbed and later released. One captive squirrel is enough for me. Along with three cats and one bunny!
Any suggestions?
Thanks so much Jackie & Critter Mom!!
I sure didn't think I would be doing this again. My Condo where I live has a ton of grounds w/squirrel abound. I always try not to study the populations closely in fear of seeing a baby! LOL
This baby is slightly younger than Nos was when my neighbor found him.
Obviously, quite fragile but feel as though I am doing the best possible for him. Truthfully, I don't think they would have tried to save him today.
I should have met my friend last night but it was around 3A.
Will try and get pics. Only a problem figuring out how to download them on TSB.
Thanks!

Dana, get yourself some 1cc syringes - you are a nurse or somehow in medicine, aren't you? The disposables need to have a little vegetable oil rubbed on the rubber tip to make them work a little more smoothly but so much better and safer that an eyedropper.
Rehydrate completely and then begin the FV, starting with a 3 water/1 powder blend, slowly bringing him up to the full 2:1 dilution.
If you have bloating issues, a lot of people are using a combo of the goats milk recipe WITH their FV at first.
3 parts goats milk
1 part flavored yogurt with cultures - Yobaby by Stoneyfield is good.
Mix THAT with the Fox Valley at 50/50. You may not need to - the FV is fine - just wanted you to have that info in case you need it.

Yes, I started using a syringe.
I feel I should do another day of hydration prior to beginning formula. Will that be OK?
I need to go to bed but keep checking on my baby. Appears slightly tired. I hope that is all?!
If I wake up and find him gone (decided a male), I will fall apart!
I know I am doing all possible for this baby but will still be hard.
He just peed. Breathing easily. Warm. Did not want any liquids now.
Just praying he will be alive in the morning when I wake up!
Sleep well baby, Peace!!:Love_Icon
P.S. Thanks Critter Mom for your info! Much appreciated. I hope he lives long enough to try formula!

Critter Mom, I see my Formula is 32/40. Is that OK as it is all I have?
It actually expires Oct 31, 2011.
Thanks!

32/40 is fine and if it has been in the freezer it will go way past that date.
I would start feeding earlier - he needs nutrition. You can further water down the formula to ass more hydration, or give regular electrilyte hydration sandwiched BETWEEN feedings. Do more hydration for [art of the day and then start with some watered down chow.

Was not in freezer. Oops! Kept in a tote in Living room.
Will try formula tomorrow if he survives the night!
He is so tiny! Poor fellow!
:thankyou

Yes, Critter Mom, I am a RN. Do some Nursing but mostly work as a Professional Nanny taking care of babies of the affluent.:poke
Truly, I think Humans are easier to care for than Squirrels and especially Bunnies!
I don't know why all of these Critters keep finding me! Three Kitties w/the last one being from a neighbor who moved leaving the Kitty. A rescued Easter Bunny while I was Volunteering in a Large City Shelter.
My friend finding Nos, my Squirrel two years ago.
I have a No Vacancy sign out now but just had to help this little guy, Peace! Of course, he will be moving on to the trees eventually!
It is a good thing I don't live in a huge house or a large farm. I grew up in Indiana on a farm. I think I need to move back and set up a Rescue!
And, btw, Squirrels are LEGAL in Indiana w/a permit! Yahoo!
Ok, off to bed.
Thank-you Critter Mom and Jackie!! It is so much appreciated!!
XOXO,
Dana and Peace

Well, I had a "gut feeling" about my sweet baby, Peace.
He just died. Such a beautiful little soul! I know he is going to Heaven.
I think he went too long over night w/o help. Or, just maybe he wasn't going to make it anyway?
He was kind of having spasms. Not really seizures. Just a couple. I noticed a few clear bubbles at his mouth. And, it was over.
This evening around 9:30p; he was full of energy and doing so well compared to earlier today.
Before he died, I did a skin turgor test. He was dehydrated. Earlier he was taking his Pedilyte well?
I truly just feel he had too much against him from the beginning. Going overnight certainly did not help w/o hydration, etc.
Does anyone have any ideas??
As I said previously, I could never be a Rehabber! Too much stress! I knew when I got him home this afternoon that it was going to be tough. He appeared to become stronger.
Was just not meant to be. I am glad he died on a warm heating pad w/some fluid in him vs. at the base of a tree and cold.
And in my Heart, I know they would probably have not done anything for him at a Wildlife Center today. He was very weak.
I will bury him tomorrow.
God Bless my Sweet Peace!!!!

Oh, I'm so sorry... This little was probably without mama for some time BEFORE being found, and sometimes it is just too long. RIP, Little Peace.:grouphug

Aww, thank-you Stosh! It made me cry! I miss the sweet fellow! Such a sweetheart!
It is hard to believe such a little package can be so full of sweetness!
I fell in love w/him the minute I laid eyes on him!
Rest in Peace, my sweet Peace!:Love_Icon
