penis sucked out of shaft

I have a 5 wks old male squirrel that had his penis sucked on so hard that his penis actucally was sucked out too! now his "shaft" ( outer skin we see of the penis) is so swollen that the penis can not go back in! Its going to dry out........help! I've never had this happen before ever! I've used vetericyn wound & infection treatment on it,preparation H (for swelling), KY jelly hoping to keep it moist and then put Bitter Yuck water based,non sting spray made by Naturvet on the rest of my males.I dont like it,but its all I have right now. I know BitterApple stings so I didnt want that one.

what do I do? Will I have to put him to sleep?

should I start Clavamox on him, if so how for a 77 gramer? I've cut back on his feeding because I dont know if he can pee. He does have bowel movements and his bladder is not full or extended so maybe he is still peeing.I put him on a all white towel hoping to see urine, but he was peeing clear urine before this happened.I feel so freaking bad!!

How much clavamox does a 62 gramer need?

I am not sure about the meds - but I would keep KY on it to keep it moist and from drying out until the swelling goes down and the penis can retract.... maybe some else will come along soon that can help dose the med for you. No more BItter on it - try to find some thing to wrap him in (like a diaper) to keep him from sucking...... I use the medical no tape wrap like they use when you give blood to wrap up my little boys when this happens (you can buy it at walmart with the band-aids).

Great idea about the wrap. Its not the baby sucking on homself, its the other babies that do the sucking.

They dont know the difference between the penis of a baby male and mom's nipple. They are just rooting around looking for mom,and come across the penis.

The Bitter Yuck! by NaturVet is water based and non stinging, but I did not put that on the penis. He is now by himself. I did put the bitter yuck on the other males hoping this will not happen again.All the males have been sucked on once or twice already, and if they got swollen the preparation h works on taking down the swelling.

I talked to a very well known squirrel rehabber who owns a very popluar online supply rehab store and she said that her clinic is having the same problem this year,a lot worse then ever before. Its weird and confusing to us.

Prolapsed penis...what I would do..
1) make sure there is not a hair wrapped around it causing this issue.
2) this is ONLY temporary until you can get to a vet...
make a sugar and water paste...thick, yet wet enough you can paint his penis, do this and allow 20-30 minutes for the coating to dry, re apply every hour until you have a very thick sheath/coating over the shaft, other wise the tissue will die {necrotic} and an amputation will need to be done, death sometimes occurs. I advise a vet on monday morning...or E clinic asap.

OK my heart just sank Jackie....Charley has had this on and off and his is sticking out and I am afraid it is drying up.....however I have been through so many bouts with this and so many surgeries we just keep trucking :grouphug I never heard about the sugar water mix but that may be a good protection till a vet visit :thumbsup
Charley Chuckles has to wear a vest FOREVER :osnap because he will chew chew :nono ....what I have been using lately is Aquaphor healing ointment (you can get it at Wall-mart by the hand lotion/a lot like Vaseline but it remains on and stays moist where Vaseline wears off quicker....I have been told Vaseline can actually dry your skin out :dono ...the Aquaphor has mineral oil but it is thick in consistency I think they have a generic /I also use on and off Polysporin... )......I am assuming the squirrel has been taken away from other squirrels (sorry I only read fast) so the only one sucking would be on himself? I really don't know but could he be fed more:thinking That is for a rehabber to answer. A wrap you can use that would be good for a baby is by Curad called 'HOLD TIGHT' I find it at Walgreen's...it is like a tube, by bandages /I am not sure how big your baby is but I think you could just cut a piece place him in it Leave the penis out...then use a self adhering elastic bandage I buy one by Johnson & Johnson called Coach...it comes in different widths (you may have to cut it so it is not to wide...but then after you put the 'Hold Tight' on you secure with the elastic bandage/loosely not to tight just enough to stay on make sure you can put your finger underneath) you may be able to just get away with the bandage the reason I put the cotton 'Hold Tight' on is so the skin doesn't sweat or rub...but for a temporary thing maybe all you need it the bandage......this should prevent him from bending over and sucking on himself......
PLEASE note Charley is 7 and we have had issues all his life with this as well as other things and he is a happy boy and has a quality life :D :thumbsup So no PLEASE don't think of putting this little guy down/I am sure for him this is a temporary thing ....I want to put up some pics of the wrap but I need to get to my desk computer where all my pics are but I wanted to get this out to you and hope that I have been of some help :grouphug

Charley wears a vest I made but you should only need to use the cotton Hold Tight and the Elastic bandage.....I am going to put the vest in (made from a can wrapped with duct tape/then a unscented mini thin pad over that).... the cotton Hold Tight on his body first/then the vest/ and all secured with the elastic bandage :thumbsup

also the squirrels need to be fed more and more often ... the percentage based on weight is a good guideline but sometimes they need more....

this is one of our more common problems... if you do a search with penis or sucking i'm sure you'll come up with more tips....

JIT is exactly right! Also REMOVE that baby to a box by itself. This is a situation that can not be allowed to be made worse by further being suckled on.
A squirrel with this kind of swelling and inflammation of the penis and prepuce, you must also be sure that the sq is peeing. It hurts to pee so he may be holding it and not emptying his bladder. If he is not emptying his bladder he can get a UTI. Or he may not be able to pee because of a scab that will undoubtedly form over the top of the penis. Soak the end of his penis in warm water well. Carefully and gently remove the scab. This will need to be done 5 times a day. His bladder can fill to the point it will burst and he will die. To reduce swelling and inflammation soak the sq in warm water and Epsom salts in a bowl or tub. (This soak is made with 2 quarts of warm water and 1-2 tbs of Epsom salts . Place the sq.'s lower half only in the warm water for a 5-10 minute soak. After the soak, make sure he is completely dry and does not chill) . According to an article in the NWRA publication, Epsom Salts helps reduce swelling , this method is very helpful. Next you must not let his penis dry out. Cases of paraphimosis require prompt treatment to reduce the swelling and inflammation , especially if raw tissue is exposed. Keep the tissue of the penis moist with a topical application of aloe vera gel, honey, Silvadene, neosporin, vaseline, Vit. A&D, or ANYTHING to keep the raw penis tissue moist, etc. Do not use products with alcohol or things like bitter apple or anything like that. It will burn this poor baby and/ or damage the tissue further. If swelling and inflammation does not decrease rapidly and allow the penis to return or stay in the normal position within 24 hour , it may be necessary to have a Vet make a tiny incision in the prepuce to allow the penis movement back to the normal position. Antibiotics and pain meds are needed. Infant Ibuprophen can be used for pain and swelling. I or others can dose meds. if needed. If the penis dries and becomes necrotic, euthanasia is necessary most often. Please see a Vet ASAP. This is a life threatening situation.

Im skipping reading ( will go back and read them) I just want to post and say that NO,the baby is not sucking on himself. Another baby did this to him.

I think I know which squirrel it was and its all my fought. what i mean is I know which squirrel has enough sucking power to pull out the penis. I put a older baby in with my 5 weekers. I got in 20 babies in one day, all came in with their eyes closed but 1. All the ones I got were four 3 week old babies (only 2 from the same nest ) and two that were closer to 4 weeks. ( not from same nest) All the rest I got were all a little older at 5-5 1/2 wks old,all eyes still closed.

then I got in 1 that had his eyes open and looked to be about 6-6 1/2 weeks old. I had him by himself since his eyes were open already.After talking w/ a few other rehabbers, I decided to put him w/ the 5-5 1/2 weekers. About this time i noticed that some of the males had their penis sucked on due to babies thinking it was a nipple from Mom. Then a few days ago,I found a baby male that had been sucked on so hard his penis was out to. I got to thinking that none could suck that hard but maybe one.....the oldest one,the 6- 6 1/2 weeker.So I removed him.He really loved being with the other babies. No squirrel likes being alone,but I couldnt risk it.
the injuried male is not with any others.His alone.

its been a week since I got them all,so they are now a week older and all but 2 1/2 have their eyes open now ( one has only 1 eye open right now,both will be open soon)

The penis is hard, and did dry out sometime during the night.I reapplied meds. I called the local vet.he will charge me $40.00 just to walk through the door! He said he will charge more for any work his does.Im upset because he will not give me a price break. I need 3 babies looked at.I cant pay for all that.

another thought: if your budget is so tight, maybe, there is a way to do a raffle or something here. Quite a few ppl have done it before when an expensive surgery for a squirrel was needed.
I, personally, have never organized a raffle of that sort, so would not know where to start.
But you can ask some members, who did. Mpetys, for instance - just recently, there was a raffle to help her with a malocclusion surgery. "Tina's surgery is today" thread in TSB Success stories. Send her a private message.
Or, you could post a new thread, asking for help and ideas.

The only thing is, from what I understand, such issues with suckled penis are very serious and urgent, time-sensitive. As UdoWhat said, they need to be seen by a vet ASAP.
But, maybe, you could spend whatever you have and then, compensate through the raffle?...
just thinking...

Also, there have been situations in the past here, when people pitched in and donated as much as they could, mostly, through a paypal account. Do you have one?...
You could post a new thread, explaining the situation and asking for help.

At 77 grams the dose is 0.02cc every 4 hours. Use the Infants' Ibuprofen 50mg/1.25ml. It is liquid and is flavored. I use the WalMart brand. Berry flavored. On a 1 cc syringe you need only pull up to the first 2 tiny lines. This is a very low dose so be sure he gets a good 1 drop in his mouth. Mine like the taste.

since the dose is so tiny 0.02cc, I am copying what Nancy suggested for another member, who, too, needed to dose a very tiny amount (it was 0.03 ), but it was important that the baby got every drop:

To get every last drop, pull up air into the syringe to the .3 mark. Then pull up your medicine 3 little marks from that (your medicine will stay in the tip of the syringe), but when you administer it, the .3 of air that you pulled up will push out all of the medicine. First try it with water, you will see exactly what I mean.
This should be no more than 2 drops.

So, for you instead of pulling up air to the.3 mark, you will be pulling up air to the .2 mark and then pulling up medicine for 2 little marks from that.
