I am rehabbing a 5 week old squirrel, and yesterday I noticed his knee had a large red bump on it with a tiny yellow scab on it. Today I noticed that at the bottom of the red bump there is another little hole that looks like a pimple. I'm not sure what it is, or how I deal with it. I thought it might have just been a hematoma or something but with the scab as well I didn't think so. I am hoping it is nothing, but I want to do everything I can to help him. Also, I took pictures but when I tried to attach them they were too big, do you know how I can resize them?

no matter how often I see botfly pics, every time I see one, I am not sure whether it is a bot or a bite or something.:dono :thinking
Let's wait till experienced ppl take a look

The hole in a botfly wound usually looks dark and wet. This looks more like an infected puncture wound.

That looks more like and infection or a bite, than a bot. I would suggest starting baytril to help the little one. Keep it clean, we have found neosporin or vasaline will help - keeps it wet to drain so it does not grow.

Do I just put straight vaseline or neosporin on it? What about if he licks it? My friend rehabs squirrels and has some antibiotics left from one of her squirrels. I can start him on it today, how much/how often? Do I leave the scab or do I try to drain it? Thank you for all of your help! I was looking at bot fly pics and it didn't look like that, which was why I was so confused, and I didn't want to leave it if it needed treated. Thanks!

In order to give you the dosage for the meds we need to know the following:
Weight of baby in grams:
Name of medication:
Form of medication (tablet, capsule, liquid):
Strength of medication:
Frequency (what does it say on the outside of the container):
The more info you can give us the better we will be able to provide dosing instructions.

Yes, straight, just a small dab...it will keep a hard scab from forming, and if it needs to drain itself/ooze it will be able too.

See the post above.
Do I leave the scab or do I try to drain it?
Personally, I'd leave it on, the vaseline/neosporin should soften it.
Thank you for all of your help!
You're welcome! :D

Personally, I have found that the beginning (really small) bot stages are a toss up...maybe/maybe not. The bigger more advance stages are a little more obvious. If it is a bot, unless the baby is in distress, it's best to leave it be (as if poking at it to try to get it out)...if the bot is punctured in the baby it's toxic and the results are NOT good. If this is a bot, the vaseline/neosporin will block it from getting air and it will come to the surface and then we will all know for sure.
These are just my thoughts and our resident "experts" may think differently and if they do, by all means follow their advice.

Thanks, as soon as I get the antibiotics (won't be until tomorrow morning- she lives out of town and is already at work in town) I will post the information. What would be the best way to weigh him (I don't have a scale), I just know he's about 5 weeks (he just opened his eyes on Friday).

We cannot properly dose a med without a weight. Wal-Mart/Target/K-mart all sell scales and they are pretty inexpensive. If you cannot get the meds until tomorrow, can you buy a scale today?
I, personally, will NOT guess at a weight to dose a med. I am not comfortable with it. Other more experienced members can and have done so BUT they do with EXTREME caution.
Seriously, for your peace of mind and for the baby's best interest now and in the coming future...go buy a scale.
