Got my little one today! He's absolutely adorable and SO curious and alert! Obviously much more healthy than poor Gremlin was. He's on antibiotics at the moment and I need to give him his dose soon, so I wanted to know; how much is 0.1cc? Is it the very first notch on a 1cc syringe? Thanks :)

What is the antibiotic and how old is the squirrel, what's the weight of him?

He's already been given a dosage by the vet who saw him, and has been on the antibiotics for 4 or 5 days, with huge improvement, according to the girl who had him before me. I don't know how much he weighs as I do not have a gram scale yet, but he's around 5 weeks old. The antibiotic is Chlorpalm.

OK I am not familiar with that drug, but as long as you are sure it was 0.1 and not .01.
On your syringe you should have 10 longer lines, can I assume that you have no numbers? You would give it up to the first long line. Wait I will take a photo. BUT a little trick, first pull up some air into the syringe, to about the .3 line....then pull up your antibiotic which would make it go to the .4 line. This way, the air will force out every drop of the antibiotic.
I will post a photo in one minute of the syringes I use, I actually tried 0.1 and it should be about 3 drops.

OK is your syringe like this?

Be very careful when handling the chloro palmitate; I believe it can be absorbed thru the skin and is toxic to humans.

I've heard the warnings, I'll try to be careful!

Nancy; Yes, that's the kind of syringe I use, and it has numbers. 0.1 barely even seems like one drop to me, which is why I'm a little confused.

Try pulling up water to the 0.1 mark, and then see if you get three drops in your hand.

Oh and thanks for the tip! I was wondering how I'd get so little antibiotic out into his mouth :) That should work.

I get one drop, though I think there's a second stuck in the syringe, which is why I'll try your idea.

Yeah, I tried it again, and I got 2 drops....:D Even with pulling up the air first. So.....it's a small amount for a small squirrel.:) Hope it does the trick for this little peanut...:grouphug

Seems to be doing wonders for him thus far, let's hope it stays that way! He's a total sweetie.

He's being a bit stubborn. Could I mix it with a tiny bit of formula to get him interested?

Perfect, and where are those photos of your little darling? 148041 148041 148041

Would it really be that difficult to squirt it in really fast? It's only two drops. You could dip the end of the sryinge in formula and then squirt....:thinking They usually say not to give in anything, because since it's such a small amount, we want them to get it ALL....Just tell him it's tough love...:dono :Love_Icon

I tried again while he was in his cage (And thus not intent on exploring) and he took it :) I just didn't want to squirt and get it in his eye or nose, because he was very squiggly and I couldn't get the end of the syringe NEAR that little mouth!

Pictures will come soon, promise!

Oh jeez, I think I gave him the wrong dosing... Isn't 0.1cc the first big notch on a 1cc syringe, after the 9 little notches? 'Cause if so I only gave him 0.01. Argh.

If the dosage is 0.10cc, it will be 1/10 of a 1cc syringe - there are 10 "bigger" marks on the syringe and it would be one of those. If it is 0.01cc, it is 1/100 of a syringe, or just one of the teeny little lines. Not even half a drop.

Yes it is the first big mark on the syringe, right after the 9 smaller lines. I marked in black the 0.1 dose.

Thanks for the tip Nancy! I did not know that. I have a little one that is getting meds and I just tried it your way and it worked beautifully!

Xepher, I hope your little one continues to improve!

Little one was up and about this morning, making lots of noise to let me know that he's hungry :P I've missed those sounds so much.

Instead of making a new thread, I thought I'd ask here; can goatsmilk cause eventual diarrhea? The people who had him before me were feeding him that. I have him on 50/50 goatsmilk and FV right now, to get him adjusted, and he did have a bit of diarrhea this morning. It wasn't super runny, more gooey than anything, and was a brown-mustard color. Will this stop once he's on full strength FV? Should I consider mixing up a hydrating solution to give to him every so often just in case?

Sometimes they have a loose bm if they over eat. They seem to need less formula and longer between feedings with FV. They also have firm normal poop with FV. It may just be the transition. You are doing great! :thumbsup

Okay, I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and see if his poop firms up. Thanks :)

Are you mixing yogurt with the goats milk? 3 parts GM 1 part yogurt, preferably full fat yogurt with some flavor (I like Stoneyfield Yobaby in vanilla or banana). Yogurt helps the tummy - probiotics.:thumbsup

Haven't tried yogurt yet, no. I read something in another thread about yogurt giving diarrhea too, is that true?

CritterMom

No, the probiotics in the yogurt will usually STOP diarrhea. It is the heavy cream in the goats milk formula that you phase in slowly because the richness can make the tummies touchy. Yogurt with loive cultures will HELP.

If you are feeding the goats milk formula for more than a couple days you do need to start adding the cream though - baby squirrels have pretty high fat requirements.

He's actually getting FV along with the goats milk, I'm slowly transitioning him to the FV formula. He's been on goats milk for nearly two weeks now, since that's all the people who had him could get to feed him with at the time. That being a said, he's small and a bit scrawny, but I think he'll fatten up one he's on full strength FV. I'll get him some yogurt too :)

I swear it's like I'm learning this all over again. I have yet another question concerning my new baby.

While feeding, he some times lets go of the tip of the syringe and just opens and closes his mouth repeatedly, like a fish, and kind of tilts his head up a bit. Then he snaps out of it and just goes right back to feeding. Is this just one of those "trances" they go into when nursing? I really hope so :shakehead

CritterMom

Yup. We call it "guppy mouth!" Stop dispensing formula while he is doing it - I used to tap on the top of my boy's head with the syringe to break the spell ("You are about to enter the Formula Zone") - some people waggle the syringe side to side in their mouth. It is perfectly normal - some do it and some don't. It just makes the nursing take a little longer.

Oh thank god. Now that I know it's harmless, I can go back to finding it cute and hilarious :D I do stop when he does that, for sure (Not like the syringe is even in his mouth anymore anyways!) and give him a little "Hey, wake up" nudge. Silly squirrels.

He did another gooey poop today. Could it maybe just be from his meds? Either way I'll pick up some full-fat yogurt today if I can find it.

Gave him a bit of yogurt today! It's the 2% greek stuff, plain. Here's hoping it alleviates his diarrhea a little. Poor boy has some dried around his bum and on his thighs. Tried to wipe him clean but of course, he wiggled all over the place and made it virtually impossible!
