Help! I am a squirrel rehaber in Florida. We got a new intake, a 3 week old baby female Eastern Gray squirrel. For the first week she did very well, but after she developed a rattle in her chest accompanied by the tell-tale clicking sounds. She very quickly became dehydrated and I rushed her to my vet who gave her sub Q ringers, then sent me home with Trimeth/Sulfa Susp with instructions to administer 0.04 ml every 12 hours. I have also been supplementing her feedings (which consist of 3ml every four hours) with 1ml of Pedialyte to try and combate the deyhdration. She has been on the antibiotics for 3 days now and, though initially she seemed to perk-up a bit, she now is struggling and looks to be wasting away right in front of me. She contiunes to eat 3mls per feeding, plus 1ml of Pedialyte every four hours. She is peeing and pooping. But still seems to just be getting worse and worse and ever more dehydrated. I am now giving her 0.5 ml of Pedialyte every hour in an attempt to keep her hydrated, but feel I am loosing the battle. She weezes, whines and clicks all the time and white opaque, thick fluid bubbles out of her nose. I don't know what else to do to save this sweet little girl. Please let me know if you have any suggestion. I am desperate! Thank you!

Alot of times when one antibiotic doesn't seem to be working a switch is made. In this case, I would suggest baytril, some of our best rehabbers here swear by it. Do you happen to have any on hand? If not we have tons of Florida members that may be able to share some with you if they are close by.
How much does your little one weigh and what are you feeding her?

Thank you all for your reply! Sorry for the delay in getting back. I have been hanging out at the vets in a desperate attempt to get help, after waiting for what seemed like forever (nearly all day), she told me there was nothing that could be done. I had asked if she would provide a different antibiotic, but she said no. I wish I had had a chance to check your replies instead of hanging out at my vets. Sadly, my poor little girl lost her battle and I have been heartbroken ever since. I had been dependent on my vet for advice, but I don't think she has the time to really listen to me or go the exta mile for my little guys. I want to thank you for replying and offering your help. I just wish I could have gotten back with all of you in time to help my little girl.

I was wondering if maybe this baby had a cleft pallet and some food was leaking into her lungs?
I am so sorry about losing her. You did your best for sure.
