Please say no. I was given a 5 week old baby a week ago and he was fine until this morning when I noticed a rather large bump between his mouth and neck and a smaller one next to his mouth. I know he scratched his face pretty bad a few days ago while eating but this really looks like poxs to me. I only found out this morning that this baby was found in Suffolk county and not Queens like I originally thought. I will post a picture later when he wakes up. Do pox show up this quickly and after a week? I have no experience with this but he's acting totally fine otherwise.
hi: you'll need pictures for id .....
i've no idea ...but will call attention to this thread....
here are some threads outlining treatment for pox.....
(I believe that we can get pox in canada so i wouldn't consider that you can't in NY....):grouphug
it is incredibly contagious... if you've other squirrels you'll need to change your clothes and shower between feedings etc...

mrs skul uses an echinacea capsule in water for her wilds when they've got squirrel pox ... (not sure if she uses it year round) ...she finds it works really well for them and none of them mind the taste (she uses gnc i think ... it's a special brand)

:wave123 Hi Peaches
Yes Pox will show up within 2 weeks of being exposed. I have a lot of information on Pox. I would like to see a picture first. I also could be Bot Fly larva. Pox is usually not on the neck. It is Eye, Mouth, Ears, Genital area, Feet, and Hands. Have you looked at Specific Ailment Information/ Scroll down to Pox and click on it. That has some good information. On LuLuBean Mommy thread is where I posted the Picture of ECHINACEA EXTRACT/GNC Bran The other Bean do no have a good taste at all, and Squirrels will not drink it. I treat the Wilds 2 Months a year or more if needed. "Spring and Fall." Peaches Please Remember POX is spread by Fleas and Misquotes!
In the past, some members have used NutriFeron, echinechia or seameal...immune system boosters.
Most wild sqs are born with mange, sickness and weakness allows the mites to present themselves and ravage the sq when he is compromised.
Pox is a virus and needs to be treated with anti virals, {Acyclovir Antiviral} antibiotics for the secondary infections the pox creates and a good pain management plan, I recommend Metacam.
I do not treat the mange! Too hard on their system. JMO!

Peaches, we had pox last year in the Bronx and Queens so I'm sure you can haveit in Suffolk as well. However as Mrs Skul said, it normally shows up on the feet and genital areas first. I used acyclovir ("Valtrex" for human use) successfully but only had one pox baby so that does not make a guarantee :). Pix would be very helpful with this situation.

Thanks everyone. I'm trying so hard to get a usable picture but the little fuzz ball wont hold still and all I get are blurs.
They havent seemed to change in size since yesterday, the small bubble is right under his lower lip and the big one is lower down between the jaw and the neck. There are no other lessions anywhere. Both bubbles are in the exact places he scratched himself while nursing a few days ago.
This is not airborne correct? I'm freaking out a bit, he has had no contact with the others but was in the same room. No fleas or skeeters in here though, just gnats. I always washed my hands after touching him and always had a towel covering my clothes so I'm pretty confident there was no contact in that matter. He's in a critter carrier that has a fine mesh screen.

I've had three vets look at this little one and all three said "hmmm it could be but I've never actually seen pox before". I got some usable pix but I dont know how to resize them. There are still only two bubbles but they are growing larger everyday.
Please clarify for me. This is not airborne contagious correct? I'm very worried about the others because I have no place for quarentene right now.
